Back in your "glory days"...

Mr. Scot

Two questions for the former high school, college, pee-wee or whatever athletes on the board...

Back in the day when you were a budding sports star (or at least could get up off the couch without your joints sounding like a bowl of Rice Krispies) what sports did you play and what were your best skills?

Football?  Baseball?  Basketball? Curling?  What all were you into?

Were you a speedster?  A powerhouse?  A bench warmer?  What?

Heck, if you have a 'great moment' in your sports career, tell the story.

Here's your chance to tell everyone about the time you scored four touchdowns in one game for Polk High School.

I was a decent basketball player in my high school days...especially considering I never started playing until grade 11 and I grew so damn fast that I was incredibly uncoordinated and thin as a rail.  I was pretty much unstoppable in the lower key though.

Football, basketball, track

Definitely a speedster, but had some explosive power. Biggest problem was very little stamina, much like today.

In football I played safety. In my area, everyone ran and ran only. There were typically no more than three passes thrown a game. Except one school who passed every other play. Fortunately for us, they had little speed. Also was on the hands team for kick returns. Returned a few. One TD that was called back. Another time got tripped at the 5.

In basketball I was a bench warmer. Straight up went to practice every day to earn the right to a front row seat. But like I said, I had a little power. I would get some good playing time against schools with multiple big men. I could move them out of the post pretty easily.

Track was my thing. Went to regionals every year. Only went to the state meet once, freshman year on the 1600m relay team. I ran different events depending on the competition. My usual meet would be triple jump, 400m relay, 800m relay and 1600m relay. I also at times did long jump, high jump and 100, 200, 400. Ran 300m hurdles exactly once. Not my thing.

Our relay teams would usually win conference then get smoked at regionals. Our usual weak competition made my head swell.

football i hit like a mac truck, just putting people in body bags.

basketball no joke had a two year window off/on i was pistol pete. people had to start guarding me at halfcourt unwise BUuuuCKETS. the brothers call me billy hoe and got mad at me for taking their girls.

baseball, i was mr. everything... just not good. i played ALL positions catcher&pitcher included. batted left/right, even could throw left/right(didnt in game). just meh.

raced go cart, which replaced all my sports, beat adults while a teen, drove in the fasted class(80mph) while young and won some races. on tv i finished 3rd out of 112 carts. plenty of trophys, just didnt meet the right people or get the funds for the next level stuff.

I "ran" track my senior year of high school. The team had 1 coach and he was a sprinter and couldn't have cared less about us 3 shot put and discus guys. We were never shown how to do anything, never came close in any meets and still couldn't tell you the first thing about either event.

I always wanted to play football, but my father forbid it due to his blowing out his knees in HS during non-contact. It's one thing I'll always regret. Now, at 36, I have advanced osteo-arthritis in both knees and a slew of other ortho issues, so I don't know what difference it would have made, if any.

knee injuries are weird. slightly tore my LCL doing, of all things, long jump my senior year

ortho problems in your 30s are usually due to vitamin d deficiency, which eventually leads to low testosterone, which eventually leads to bone decay

I have 2 rods and 22 screws holding my thoracic spine together "correctly", a broken vertebra in my very low back, spinal stenosis, a torn rotator cuff in my throwing arm, damn near zero cartilage in either knee, my left elbow grinds upon movement due to not allowing it to properly heal after a fracture and I'm so far out of shape I run out of breath trying to tie my shoes.

I wish I had glory days to recall upon.

Wasn't very good at sports. I played a lot of soccer as a kid though. Scored a few goals. But my favorite moment was slide tackling some kid when I was like seven. No one did that at our age. I got all ball and the other kid went FLYING. His parents were all, "YOU ANIMAL!" But the ref just smiled at me and the game went on.

    • It wasn’t completely his fault, but outside of two throws and one or two scrambles he didn’t do much to help. His accuracy was all over the place, numerous passes that were placed poorly and didn’t give the receiver a good chance to catch the ball or do anything with it after. He also continues to display terrible pocket awareness. Even the sacks could have been avoided, they weren’t immediate like the pressure we got on Shough at times. Bryce just often has no feel for pressure and stands there waiting to get sacked after numerous seconds have passed.
    • I really fuging hate this era in so many ways.  I look at those Adin Ross and Neon kids, and I just wonder why tf are they famous?  Why would anyone be desperate enough to gain THAT audience that they’d risk money, career, disciplinary action to go up there and associate with those fuging dweebs?  And back in my day, racist peers got their ass beat.  And not endorsing or approving bully culture, but checks and balances and all…  had those two been bullied, or at the very least humbled, they wouldn’t be famous and glorified for being the fuging idiots they are now.  It seriously pisses me off… they both have done and said multiple, openly racist stuff and major media keeps pushing them, talking about them, and propping them up… and then dummies like Puka who don’t need the platform or exposure lend their celebrity to them.  fuging idiot… and even the other streamers, I don’t get - Speed, Kai…  I don’t understand making nobodies famous at all, but there is at least entertainment value to some degree there, and I could see how young, impressionable kids would find them something to aspire to (sadly), or view as “cool.”  But Ross and Neon?  They’re just shitty, shitty nerds with big ass mouths. I’ve went back recently and watched some classics (in two very different eras and categories 😂)  like Robocop and Idiocracy.  And what I find fascinating is how both movies illustrate how stupid society became by showing what the citizenry is entertained by.  In both, society became anti-intellectual and the citizenry were entertained by lowest denominator, primal-type absurdity - poo like, “Ouch! My Balls!”  Or on Robocop, a guy is a watching a show where they are smashing cakes on ladies’ breasts and then a guy says a line as the camera zooms in like, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” and the audience thinks it’s hilarious.  That’s where I feel like we are now.  Like who watches that clip with Puka and thinks any of that poo is funny or cool?  If I was Puka, I’d honestly be wondering why tf I’m hanging out with these beta ass, racist, cretin ass weirdos.
    • 7 wins this year and some of those against really good teams and yall think Canales might get fired? Lol Good luck getting a better coach in here if that happens.
