Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Before smitty said anything I thought those comments were odd from our gm and coach to say about the greatest player the panthers have ever put on the field .. But hey it's all about money and at the end if the day I think u should make those decisions behind close doors and untill then .. Defer defer defer ....

Honestly I don't understand any of this. Smitty is still a top 10 WR, and hands down the best WR on the team. Why is his future here even being discussed? You mean to tell me Smitty might be gone, but Bryon fuging Bell has a job?

Furthermore, you don't do this to people like Smitty. If you want to release Charles Godfrey or Brandon Lafell then go ahead. Steve Smith IS the Carolina Panthers, and will be remembered for as long as most of us are alive. fug your business. Treat this man with the respect that he has earned and deserves.

I don't think that's out of the question, especially if he moves to the slot... we all thought Steve was done after 2010. I could see him having at least one more 1,000 yard season, especially if we have some other receiving options and go a tad more pass-heavy.

I agree, the slot is the obvious answer. I think that is what "in our plans " means.

And many of you fuging idiots think it is smart to pay elite $'s to aging players....just because you have their jerseys and they are your favorite players.

Smitty is not the same player he was....and is NOT earning a $7-8M per year salary.  To pay him that with the other issues we have would be stupid.

Do we keep him or let him go....not for me to say.  But, I think there is a real good chance that he is a cap casualty if he won't redo his contract.  The NFL is a business....and most of you don't have the business acumem to run a lemonade stand in your driveway.

wannabe.

The Carolina Panthers gave Steve Smith that contract. He signed it. He didn't steal it. He didn't hold a gun to JR's head and force him to draft the language. Funny how fans and the media always get pissy when players hold out, but teams are free to do crap like this to loyal players and its all good.

Furthermore, this mentality of caring more about the bottom line than human beings is why this country is going to poo, but thats another thread I guess.

file this under G-man's learning process. I have no doubt it was just off the cuff GM speak.if he is the type of no nonsense GM people claim then it is ridiculous to try and paint this as some genius plan to send a message to SS.

Smitty is still productive and a leader on this team He is still the BEST WR we have, by far. Teams still double him. None of this makes sense.

Precisely! If he's not a good player at this point, teams wouldn't be devoting double teams to him - they'd be spreading it out among our other options or keeping someone to spy Cam. You don't just double-team a run-of-the-mill wideout, let alone one who is almost 35 years old.

That's the point, Smith stays it's his locker room. From what I understand the team wants the locker room to be Luke and Cam's.

It's not about just production, it's about Smith being a leader, who isn't always the best leader. Who's age has gone up while production has dipped.

    • In your opinion. What do you think Moton's true value in contract, dollars and guarantees? If we had not extended him, what is your plan for RT in 27 and 28? How important are good offensive linemen for our current offense? How much value do you put on protecting Bryce at this stage of his career? How difficult in general do you think finding above average tackles in the NFL is?
    • The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. Right tackle Kaleb Mcgary (who is the blindside protector for Penix since he is left-handed) is going to miss significant time, and it's looking more like it may be all season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-expect-kaleb-mcgary-to-miss-significant-time https://x.com/BKsquared7/status/1959285822236107013. Also, the top backup and swing tackle, Storm Norton (cool name BTW) is having ankle surgery and may miss half the season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-ot-storm-norton-out-6-8-weeks-after-ankle-surgery I don't root for injuries, but its also hard to be too sympathetic given how badly injuries have hit us in recent years. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.
    • That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
