The Huddle has split.....Once Again

This isn't a hive mind. There are going to be differing opinions on roster moves regardless of which team board you visit. What's funny are all these self-proclaimed sage gurus that are preaching their elitism and blind faith in the process like that is somehow a more emotionally mature way to approach free agency. You identify players that you think will help this team and if you miss on them, it sucks. Most of us know that you can't get every player you want in free agency, but with the shambles of an offensive line that we have and virtually nothing at the WR position, moves have to be made. And if you sit on your hands and wait for prices to look more reasonable then you have the chance of missing out on a fantastic addition to your squad. You're not going to hit home runs batting for singles all the time. Improving your squad requires balls sometimes and this offseason is a chance for us to hoist our team into the upper echelon and if we waste it, we spend another year of our window with the current group without the results we want.

I just can't stand the smug "oh look the babies are whining about us not doing anything", high and mighty fans. We just came off a 12-4 season. We attack this time period if we're serious about winning in my opinion. We don't wait for scraps. Shop smart, but do shop. Or else you're going to be left with the loose change hail marys that we were so fortunate worked out for us last season. If some of you are proposing that lightning will strike twice, I would say that's an unwise gamble.

These people (our front office) have far more experience and knowledge than you or I. I tend,as most other rassional fans do, to have a little faith in what they decide, especially this regime. During times during the season We used 6 rookies on our number two rank defense. So I have to believe their assessment of our young players and their potential.

Look at the big name signings last year. Revis is my No. 1 example. Tampa traded to get him and where is he now? New England. Boldin on his way out as is Rice. While it gets novice fans excited it doesn't mean super bowl.

Difference of opinion is fine and I don't have an issue when you or anyone else disagrees but the sky isn't going to fall, our team isn't going first to worst because we didn't dive into free agency on day one or two of free agency.

Lightning strike twice? Player assessment is not grabbing a headliner it is about adding players that fit your scheme. Mitchell is a perfect example. He was second string in Oakland but our staff saw he fit well here and ended up in the conversation for the Pro Bowl (and should have been there). That wasn't luck. It goes back to player assessment.

See a theme? Our staff is good at assessing talent and I BELIEVE they will continue to find talent at a good bargain until we can get out of the Hurney mess. After we are out of this mess we will continue to be wise with who fits this team.

As long as you see things in a negative manner. You are a pessismist. Have a positive outlook and see the glass half full instead of half empty. Shun the dark side and join the force.

GO PANTHERS

being a blind homer is just as sad as being an eternal pessimist. enjoy either side of delusional grandeur..

I would say there are far less BLIND HOMERISM than eternal pessissism. I think the glass is half full group see the flaws but believe they will somehow be addressed. While the sky is falling and the Panthers are destined for a 3-13 group think the season is finished on March 12.

that's cool and all, but I'm not really keeping track of which side is winning the war between good vs evil...  as if there's some trophy waiting to be awarded to either extreme that looks equally as foolish on most days.

Good vs evil and awards are far from the point. As fans we all want what is best for our team. Gettleman has proven to be a good judge of talent and seems to have a plan. Making a big splash in Free Agency isn't going to prove anything. Patience is the smart thing and since we are cash strapped it makes sense.

One thing is for certain. These groups will never go away and from eternal pessissism to blind homeristic optimisism they will all have their opinions.

I admittedly am more on the optimistic side, day in and day out.

well, it's certain these "groups" have plenty of time to play cowboys and indians on an internet forum.  one day, one side may actually win at being heard louder than the other.

    • If you think the NFL or NBA are worried about lawsuits or something like officiating scandals bringing down their empires, I think you're giving them way too much credit.  Go watch the documentary on Tim Donaghy in the NBA and who was involved and what he did.  One of the guys he worked with is still one of the league's top trusted officials, especially for playoff games.  IIRC, they have records showing he was the person Donaghy exchanged phone calls with the most during his time fixing games.  And his reputation is beyond horrible...  but he's untouchable.  I also encourage you to go watch DeMaurice Smith's Breakfast Club interview.  He laid out how for fans, we just know these organizations as a singular, public entity - like THE Carolina Panthers, or THE Dallas Cowboys- but, in actuality, he said that is the public-facing identity of an umbrella company comprised of countless smaller businesses and LLCs.  He is tasked with trying to audit their books, and he said these organizations are structured in such a way that even HE can't ever know what they truly make in a year.  It's impossible.  And now, this is just me speculating on top of that, but you think the league's themselves are structured similarly?  They are untouchable.  IIRC, they are recognized legally as "entertainment" organizations, thus protecting themselves in cases where integrity would come into question.  They are protected, layer, behind layer, behind layer.  Betting works because there is some degree of control that ensures the house wins more than it loses, by a lot.  The short of it is, "Give them bread and circuses" and all that jazz.  These leagues operate with total impunity.  Again, it's not just because I'm a Panthers fan, but even if I wasn't and I watched Superbowl 50 without a dog in the fight I would walk away feeling like that outcome was controlled and influenced HEAVILY to where the Panthers were not given a level playing field.  The same poo happens every Sunday to teams playing those blue blood franchises and ones with intriguing storylines.
    • This Chuba isn't getting traded, but Rico very well could be in a few weeks if he keeps playing well in a tandem backfield with Chuba also playing well. I think we'd end up going with a two headed monster in that case, but with Rico being on a one year deal, it does open up the possibility of a contending team offering up a decent pick for him.  Depending on the recovery of Hampton, I could see someone like the Chargers giving us a 4th for him if they think he could put them over the top, he would fit nicely in a Harbaugh system I think. If it comes to that, we need to make that trade, as I can't see any way we re-sign Rico with all our other needs and getting Brooks back too.  And he's not going to get a contract big enough to get us any comp picks in return, especially if/when we sign a FA or two ourselves.  So if we're not going to bring him back, the prudent decision would really be to get a draft pick for him at the deadline.
    • It's all about what they do at QB. It's clear the rest of the roster is improving. If they commit long term to Young because he's being carried to wins then we're fuged. I think that's a separate issue to finally being competitive again.  There's no QB in this Draft that's going to ride in on his white horse on day one and save us, so we absolutely shouldn't be playing for Draft position.
