lol @ the Saints, their cap situation is so bad they were only able to sign..... multiple star players

Ah yes, the Saints who signed multiple stars also lost:

Malcolm Jenkins, Kenyon Coleman, Jonathan Vilma, Jed Collins, Tom Johnson, Darren Sproles, Jabari Greer, Roman Harper, Lance Moore, Will Smith, Will Herring, Charles Brown, Chris Carr, and Brian De La Puente,

Risky for a player to do the one year franchise thing. Get hurt, bye-bye long term deal.

The chance for injury at that position I don't think is very high, not a serious injury that have him missing most or the whole season.  If Hardy gets a hamstring injury that keeps him out for four weeks, that won't effect his payday.  Both Peppers and Allen are still making money at their ages, imagine the dough Hardy will bring in.  Getting an extra 13 million along that is icing on the cake.  Peppers got 16 million his final year with us, and then went on to get paid in Chicago.  Now Pep is getting paid in Greenbay.  If he saved and managed his money, he's probably worth close to or has more than 100 million dollars.  I believe Hardy will follow the same model.

If he plays out the year under the tag he will.

No he won't. He'll make whatever he gets on his next contract on top of this 13 million, but if he signs now he'll still make a ton of money and perhaps have another sizeabe contract 5 or 6 years from now. Same 13 million, just paid out differently.

I'm a little confused.  If Hardy plays out the whole year under the tag, how much money would he make this year?

he's not going to net an extra 13 mil.

Yes......he will make a few extra mil by being on the tag.

You have to factor in what he would be making if he was signed and subtract that from the 13 mil.

That's the extra he's making...........a few mil.

I'm still not quite understanding.  If he signed a new contract now, or perhaps during the season, then yeah.  Yet if he were to just play out the whole year under the tag, and then become a free agent again next year, how much money would he have made in 2014?

He will have made 13 million, which is likely only a few million more than he would average under a contract and a lot less than his bonus and guarantee would be under said contract. If he gets hurt, he's made a lot less than he would have under the contract.

It would be an extra 13 million if he got it on top of a contract, and that is not the case. It's money now or money later, but it's all ultimately the same income stream - 1 dollar figure for a year's work.

what ever it is............it isn't all extra money.

It's semantics. Yes, he's making the 13m from the tag, their point is it's not an EXTRA 13m since he would've gotten paid regardless. Let's say he would've gotten 10m per with a long-term deal, that means he's making 3m more than he would have, hence 3m "extra."

Splitting hairs really

Yep.  So I'm saying Hardy will go the Peppers route.  Get paid the franchise money this year, and look toward next year for the payday.  The risk isn't all that much if you ask me.  Potentially he could have an amazing year, and go in next year prepared to make more money in a long term deal than he would have this year.  It's not a stretch to say he will have an amazing year since he's improved his numbers for the past three years now.  He's got stars playing beside him, and benefits greatly.  So if he plays out this year under the tag and puts up 18-20 sacks, he would make 13 million this year, and then sign a new contract (probably with someone else) for 14-15 million dollars a year.  Versus 11-12 million he's looking for now.
