Rubin (Hurricane) Carter, a star prizefighter whose career was cut short by a murder conviction in New Jersey and who became an international cause célèbre while imprisoned for 19 years before the charges against him were dismissed, died on Sunday morning at his home in Toronto, confirmed. He was 76.

He would have easily been one of the greatest boxers this country had ever known, but likely overshadowed by one Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali who was starting his career at the same time...

I had the great pleasure of meeting the Hurricane and hearing him speak at my boxing gym some years ago. He was fantastic. Signed my original copy of The 16th Round. The Hurricane was my inspiration to become a boxer when I was younger and I molded my style around his. He could really pack a punch for a middleweight.
