Panthers met with Hooker per report
TheMaulClaw replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's debatable. Hooker is an okay scrambler. But the comparison remains valid. Hooker isn't significantly more athletic then Bridgewater. I'm not sure he bounces back completely after that ACL tear either. Both of them are similar in the pocket. I'd rather have Hookers backup at UT honestly. Bridgewater didn't scramble at all in the two years following his knee rebuild. The years after that when he was the starter both here and Miami his ypc were on par with Hookers and that's in the NFL. That's all I'm saying. It's a legit comparison. Hooker is a backup at best. -

You are the one that quoted a random metric to start this debate off. You decided to only use a small portion of Bridgewater's college statistics to make him seem slow, unathletic, and unable to scramble. His yards came after major knee reconstruction too. When the reality is Hooker and Bridgewater both have mild scrambling ability, are known for accuracy, and are both injury prone. Hooker should be happy if he winds up with the same career as Teddy toilet water. -

Hooker's ypc his senior season was essentially identical to Bridgewater's the year he was here -

Yeah and he blew out his ACL when the wind blew the wrong way. Btw Bridgewater rushed 53 times for 279 yards his year with Carolina averaging over 5 a carry. He isn't Eli Manning. -

Hooker isn't that big and he blew out his knee in a non contact injury. Teddy Bridgewater was a 1st round pick too. You're acting like the guy wasn't a well regarded athlete in Louisville. -

Hendon Hooker is another Teddy Bridgewater, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not what we need. -

Levis was a monster the prior season. Kentucky was riddled with injuries this year. Levis can play, don't be fooled. He has talent. Not saying he's who I'd want first, but we could certainly do worse. -
Then just stay at 9 and draft Richardson. Look I really want a QB now too, but at what cost? People are acting like all we have to do is take a qb and we're ready to win the SB. Trading 3 number 1's is the dumbest thing this franchise could ever do. If we want to be Superbowl contenders then we should just trade back if our qb isn't there. We could potentially have 4 picks in the first 2 rounds. We grab our TE, DT, DE, and another WR. We go into next year with very little roster deficiencies with a ton of cap room, and potentially a top 15 pick. My point is, we need to have a roster strong enough to withstand 3 years without a 1st rounder before we make that kind of move.

The goofiest cornball coach in the NFL?
TheMaulClaw replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
That was atoned for in 2015 in a big time way. We're even in terms of disappointing playoff losses against each other. I do dislike Kyler Murray though. -
I think our run game will look really good this year with Deuce and Brown. I have to assume that Brown will pretty much be the run game coordinator. With Reich calling the passes and him calling the runs.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if Brown handled calling the run plays.

I totally agree we will get exponentially better with a franchise qb. I think it just depends on if your really sold on one of the prospects this year. I like Stroud the most, but deep down I'm a little unsure about all of them this year, but if I had to gamble it would be on Stroud. I just don't think we have the draft capital to get him without significantly hamstringing this franchise for years to come. The only way it becomes worth it is if he became a flat out star. If we were to keep Darnold (Bearded Darnold only), we would have the most flexibility. Darnold won't inhibit our cap much. Darnold has improved. We won't have to pay Carr 30 million dollars a year. We won't lose our future draft picks. Two things can happen with Darnold. Darnold improves because he is the starter going into mini and training camps. Darnold will actually have one hell of a coaching staff around him for the first time. He had Adam Gase and Matt Rhule...poor guy. Then we win the NFC South with Darnold. OR We are back at number 9 next year, because Darnold truly sucks...but this time we are back at number 9 with amazing cap space and we will truly be just a qb away. We are not just a qb away right now. We need TE help. We need another starting linebacker. We need another receiver. We need help at corner, I'm not sure if Jackson can return the same player. We're going to need an opposite edge, and a 1 tech since it appears we're going hybrid 3-4 zone blitz.

I think we're still a year away from being truly competitive. I think it would be impatient to sell the farm for a qb this year. I do think we should trade the picks and accrue even more assets for next year. I want to win this year, but I don't see a consistent path with any of the veteran qbs available or a rookie QB that we would have to trade so much for. If we time it for next year we can have a wealth of draft picks combined with the 2nd most cap space in the league.

Top contenders for QB's in the draft
TheMaulClaw replied to panther4life's topic in Carolina Panthers
Would be so dumb. -
I wasn't mad about the actual hire. I was mad at the optics of the search process. I like what Reich has done but we still don't know what's happening at QB and the team hasn't taken the field yet. So while optimistic this is too early to give a grade.
-
Cam was one of a kind. There is no Cam Newton in this draft.
-
Carr is less risky. Let's say we sell the farm and move up but the rookie QB busts. Then we are really screwed. Even though personally I would just keep Sam if we want to draft and develop. Sam will be much cheaper and will allow us to keep more cap space for next year when it's time to really compete.

That combined with the "Mulligan" really makes me think it's all bullshit. Patriots were caught cheating and they got to keep their ring. I even put one on one time, I saw it on my finger, taunting me, trolling me.....continue Maynard James Keenan lyrics here.
-
Not that I'm unwilling to wait it's that I'm unwilling to wait 7 years. I've waited 5.
-
I'm concerned what the implications of bringing in a rookie QB means. It means we are yet another 2 or 3 years away. I don't want Matt Rhule's seven year theory to be proven correct.
-
Oh I have high expectations, and so do they. This is the NFL. I know the team would have improved under Wilks, these guys were brought in to take us to the next level beyond what Wilks could have done next year. We've been patient. There is nothing loony about impatience now. It's been 5 years and we're supposed to sit back and watch the team suck with a new coach and an unproven rookie qb for another 2 years? fug that.
