It’s okay not liking Corral as a prospect, but not liking him BECAUSE OF LAST PRESEASON like @Sean Payton's Vicodin apparently…is absurd in context. So early. Such a small sample. Awful protection. Leftover reps was all he had in practice. It says a lot about a poster when they write any player off that early. Never forget the week 1 “Icky is a bust” thread.

I think between Hooker and Corral, plus all the talent we can add by keeping our picks… That beats trading everything to move up for another guy. One of those guys surely will be a solid QB for us.

For me, the penalty issues early in the season…didn’t worry me because that’s coachable. He would have stellar coverage and just panic and tackle the dude. …what bummed me out was giving up on plays against Tampa, in a must win game. Not sure how coachable that is. I just haven’t been able to stick my neck out defending him after that. Elite athlete or not.

Panthers founder Jerry Richardson passes away at 86
Wundrbread33 replied to mcsmoak's topic in Carolina Panthers
The panther was my favorite animal as a kid, and my Mom grew up in NC. Perfect match. Thanks for adding some football fandom to my childhood JR. Rest in peace. -
If we acquire Rodgers or Carr, we won’t draft a QB at 9. At least incredibly unlikely since nothing is impossible. We probably load up on skill players in the first two rounds, or go for our favorite edge. Corral and Eason will be the young guys learning, and since they are already on the roster, their presence won’t piss off the vet we just committed to.

I guess this far in I didn’t realize you were talking to OP. That’s my bad. I still think that Darnold being “the guy” is a very rare opinion though lol.
-
Yeah example number 1 will always be (for me) Dan Marino not winning a Super Bowl. There will always be that person(s) who will put that on Marino and try to take away from what he did. Then there are those who know it’s not that simple.

You’ve missed the point.

To some on here, wins/losses are entirely on the QB. It’s always their fault if the team loses. It’s always their doing if the team wins. …except for Sam going 4-2 in his starts last season…that doesn’t count.
-
What do you mean by “he’s the guy”? I don’t see many saying that. I see people talking about him being a bridge QB, backup, or a “manage the game” type guy. I take your wording as “believing he’s the future at the position for the franchise” and I don’t think that’s what people are saying. Regarding this being his 6th year, I think the more important number is his age. At 25-26, he is entering mental maturity as a person. I agree that he shouldn’t be considered “the guy” but that also seems like a monster that you created to slay.

Fitterer, Reich Combine pressers today
Wundrbread33 replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Like two sips of coffee for me and it’s a stressful time for those low flow toilets. -
To be fair, the team was able to go 4-2 with Sam Darnold under a weaker staff (on paper). It’s not unreasonable for him to game manage this team into the playoffs in this weak ass division. And regarding “unfixable”…that’s kind of vague. Reich has historically squeezed better than expected performance from quarterbacks he has had. I’d be surprised if Sam got worse or stayed the same under Reich and co. Safer bet would be he would improve, but who knows.
-
Another angle to this, is that if your plan is drafting a QB, and developing him or Corral to take over as the future, bringing Sam back makes sense more than a splash FA or blockbuster trade for a vet QB. If Sam plays well or continues to improve under this staff, it’s found money, and worst case scenario he can game manage before turning the reigns over with no controversy. I think his contract would be indicative of that too. Someone like Carr, getting paid what he’s getting paid, means he’s the guy for the foreseeable future, at least in theory. If you don’t like Sam in this scenario, then substitute another middling guy like Brissett in his place.

Guess I was watching the games @Ricky Spanish was watching. Sam improved more in the realm of eliminating mistakes and knowing when the play was over and ending it on his terms. Much more throw aways, and using his legs to buy time while keeping his eyes downfield. His stats weren’t great, but he made me less nervous because the game seemed to have slowed down for him a bit. Also playing behind a better line helped. I think it’s pretty easy to poo on Sam, and you won’t get internet points for saying good things about him, but he did indeed improve, and I’m fine saying it. That isn’t the same as saying I want him as the opening day starter, and I think a lot of people make that kind of leap in discussions like this.
-
We shall see. The last game probably screwed him, even though the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Saints D was balling out, and he made several plays to eliminate bad plays (escaping the pocket/throwing the ball away). Even one of the picks was actually a good decision and would have been a great throw if it was 6 inches further downfield. The games before that, I thought he showed a lot of growth and maturity in his decision making. In the end the mantra I’m telling myself is “trust the staff” even if that ends up being Darnold as a bridge.

I was just being a silly goose.

We literally drafted one last draft.
-
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. If Matt Corral went to Bama/Ohio St, he would have put up silly numbers, and he’d be hyped as a top 10 pick. Doesn't mean he, Young, Stroud end up being that kind of talent in the end, but he does things on tape that put him in that class of prospect. He got punished for playing through pain, getting hurt in the bowl game, and because he was a college kid who drank beer. His question marks are his lis franc, and what every QB has to deal with; mental adjustment to the NFL. I don’t want to hear poo about his size, particularly when Young is considered so highly. He has all the athleticism, intangibles, and arm you want.

How Often each team in the NFL went Run-Run-Pass
Wundrbread33 replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
I agree that we have found greener pastures, but I won’t forget that Wilks was working with McAdoo and a QB room of Darnold, Baker, and PJ. Let’s just thank Wilks for reestablishing some dignity to this franchise and let him go in peace.- 19 replies

I might be reading too much into this but...
Wundrbread33 replied to methodtoll's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don’t think much can be made from these pressers regarding personnel. It’s all vague. Everyone wants a QB who facilitates to the playmakers but can make the play himself when he needs to. A QB who can stand strong in the pocket but can make plays with his feet. A strong arm with accuracy who can rifle it but knows when to throw with touch. Every QB is a “point guard”. But some QB’s are more Chris Paul and some are more Ja Morant. -
Lol dude I think you combine people in your head or something. I’m not on Carr’s nuts. I simply said what I said about the overuse of “retread”, lumping every QB in the same category, you responded, I asked you to clarify your definition of retread, and you didn’t respond to that but argued something I wasn’t taking about. Stay organized.
