My dream lineman signings actually happened. That’s not normal Panthers. As much as I dislike this regime, they’ve done a nice job with Corbett and Bozeman.

David Tepper - Come on in here and get this humble pie
davos replied to TheWiz's topic in Carolina Panthers
Tepper and Rhule will stay on the DL until they draft a QB and pretend that was the plan all along. That shmuck Pickett is gonna happen ffs -
Don’t like Willis. Don’t like Pickett. Don’t like Corral. There are much better upgrades at 6 to build a contender. I said it elsewhere, take a stab at a mid rounder if one presents itself. Virtually no risk, high reward. Focus on the build. A FA vet is pointless. That would be a midseason pickup if let’s say Darnold stays awful and a young guy gets thrown to the wolves doesn’t work out. They become a late pickup/tank commander. Let’s call this type a Nick Mullens.

Such a hard pass on Jimmy. I’d prefer prime Delhomme over him.
-
let's go with a Mayfield thread first
-
The man who hates this the most? Matt Rhule. His 2022 just got super difficult to salvage. Maybe Tepper will put him out of his misery early.

We looked so desperate and got absolutely nothing lol. But hey now, Corbett seems cool. Now come the Baker and Jimmy rumors..ugh haha

A hopeful non-Watson scenario that doesn't mortgage the future

Yup. Pretty much the premise but I totally favor a pick over some random FA. You at least have the chance at a sleeper rather than a mid-career bum. -

I've personally been a fan and wasn't aware of his let's call it 'character shtick'. I didn't get why it seemed so many are placing him well behind Pickett and Willis but the more and more that's been happening, the more cautious I am. It's not without merit that teams (not just writers/analysts) are iffy on him. So then I ask how much recently was just a focus PR stint focused around what he developed with Lane? -

Exactly. I guess what I'd weigh is if the trade down worth is it to lose out on a top 10-12ish talent in this draft. Looking like Jax goes Hutch. So we've got a shot at Neal or Ekwonu. It's something to consider. -

I was actually high on him previously. Same with Strong. Liked them both less the more I dug in. -

Carr can play for a playoff winner, and I actually really like the guy as a player, but it's not going to work out with us. Even if he is the brother with no gloves. Just don't see it. He's needed that dude who can take the top off a d and has never had it. One thing I'll tell you--put him in SF instead of Jimmy with Kittle, Deebo and Mitchell and they're a SB fave. -

Maybe don't even focus on developing. Just throw them in like Mills last year or Russ back in the day. Just see what happens if Darnold looks awful (which will happen). Coan/Glass in Round 4? I mean, the value in that pick isn't something super coveted. If that's all we're using to reach, just do it. NO did it with Ian Book. A lot of smart teams do it, hell a lot of stupid franchises do as well. Most of the time doesn't work out. Sometimes it does, might as well give it a shot. We'd be putting as much blind faith in Willis and would give up the 6th overall of 263 picks. -

We've got an extra 5th. If we're comfortable giving all this stuff up for Watson, why not just use one of those or our 4th if we land Cross or Penning at 6. It's a dud draft for us with Rhule and Fit at the helm. Bleed it dry for them and take your best shots at upgrades. Reset 2023 if the QB doesn't work (which could be likely) Cross-Insert Body-Insert Body-Corbett-Moton is a crap ton better than last year. Insert Body is so much better than Elf at C and Brady at LG. -
A hopeful non-Watson scenario that doesn't mortgage the future
davos replied to davos's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yup. And I'm not promoting the overdone idea that you can easily find a franchise QB in the third or 4th, but we need to clearly upgrade this team as much as possible. So do that at pick 6, and then gamble with that next pick (however we get it or wait until round 4). Just see what happens. Could very well not work out, oh well. We've tried that with Lefors and Grier. A team can hit every once in a blue moon. It's good to be aggressive, but the QB market is running dry. Don't waste resources on a thin situation when we're already pretty thinned out. -

I hate the "broken clock is right twice a day" motto but maybe these sh*tbrains could back themselves into a decent QB by accident. -
The CB FA market is super interesting this year. Makes a lot of guys hitting that 30-32 year old wall expendable. Would not want. He'll be retiring by the time we're good.
-
The title really says it all. I'd like to think that in title is what we all want right? And we see it all, there's a Baker thread, Jimmy G one, Willis, etc. and then you'll get the "Stick with Darnold" option. Let's not forget the faction of people convincing themselves to want Pickett, Corral, etc. Well, I really see one scenario that fits the bill for me. If/when Watson doesn't happen and completely change things up: You have a miffed Tepper and Rhule needing to answer to the media and fans after pawning over this guy for 22 months. It's likely blinded them from making other practical moves. I could actually see Rhule just getting fired in the coming weeks if so (wishful thinking but it's going to be a bad look if they come out of this with nothing) We are paying Darnold in 2022 no matter what. $18ish mil. There's no trade to be had with him. So, you either ride him, sit him, or release him. Doesn't really matter if he plays or not. Draft wise--regardless, you pick BPA w/need weighed at Pick 6. I'm talking Neal, Thibodaux, Cross, Ekwonu, or Wilson, it's simply not a QB with this draft. So now my question, what is the pickup? Is it a cheap FA or a mid-rounder? It's clearly a mid-rounder. What good does Mariota, Fitz, etc. really do for us? If anything, they may cause us to win some games against the bottom half of the league. So yep, draft...even if it requires a slight Round 3 trade up. They don't always hit, but they CAN hit. Whether it be Howell, Ridder, Strong, Glass, or Coan (whoever). Someone is going to fall, there may only be 1 or 2 QBs going in the 1st. If one we like lasts to the third, that's worth a minor trade up (using a 5th) at the most, just roll the dice. Not much risk, big reward. So, if the Watson saga fails: Staring at a top 2023 pick, grab the best boost possible at 6, and take a random mid-round gamble. Take your top QB in 2023 and not some mid-career vet that's semi-capable. If it succeeds: You've found one of the rare 3-4th round QB success stories a la Russ, Tark, Cousins. I wouldn't be mad about this. Would be a rare scenario where I'd retain minimal interest until we're chatting about Young, Stroud, Haeder, Slovis, McCall, Levis, etc.
-
Inb4 we start changing tunes about 2023 actually not being that special of a QB class. And it isn’t, just better relative to this one. Anyone hear the joke about an undersized Bama QB and an OSU QB walking into an NFL team? ECU kid, Levis, Slovis and Haener (do love Haener), one will rise from that crop and would be my eventually target. Ideally Haener. But for now, just swing on Baker if it isn’t a big asking price. I can’t imagine it would be if he’s apparently only a fraction of Deshaun’s current value. And if no, still pass on Willis/Pickett at 6 and take a gamble on Glass or Coan if all falls through in r3-4. Pull a tank with Darnold/random draft pick and see if we found one of those rare decent 3rd-4th rounders. Jimmy G is a waste of time and is not that good. The rest of trade targets and FAs aren’t worth the time money or energy. Just keep Darnold and draft someone in the mode if we can’t land Baker. Jimmy G never really looked that good when he’s had to take over a game. Like ever.

We don’t really have a culture. Simple as that.

To be honest, I've always liked him. He's shown up a handful of times throughout his career. Someone mentioned earlier--perfect measuring stick for Marshall and Shi. They better outperform him or they'll be on the wrong trajectory. At the same time, could produce if he ends up making the team. Solid backfill. He was also tighter off the field w/Baker than Landry or OBJ...
-
I don’t really know what we would give up for Baker. He’s not worth a high 1st (or even mid 1st). Don’t really know what type of package would make sense.

The one before we existed

Ummm he played for us the last two years. This is our own UFA re-signing brevs.

It's Caserio, just tell them Burns is an atheist. Derrick Brown, Robbie, and Darnold on the other hand love Jesus.
