Calling "hyperbole" is amusing, given that every year Kaepernick is away, the perception of how good he was when he played gets further exaggerated. At this rate, he'll be a hall of famer and borderline greatest of all time within three or four years from now. As far as a more realistic take... Good? Somewhat. Very good? Maybe at times. Great? Not really. He was always a better athlete than quarterback, and plenty of people knew it. General belief was that he never got past being a one read quarterback (and there was plenty of film evidence) but Harbaugh did a good job compensating for it. That's reality.

Of the currently available quarterbacks... Nobody

We are not a quarterback away from the playoffs. And if we were, that quarterback wouldn't be Mayfield.

Kaepernick was never that good. Unless we're bringing Jim Harbaugh back to build a system around him, it wouldn't be a good move even if he hadn't been out of football for years. But he has, and we aren't, so let's not.

Polian says a lot of the same things I think about what makes a great quarterback. Just being a great athlete who can run fast and throw far isn't enough. Too many people fall in love with the highlight reels and don't look at the whole picture.

Have no personal feelings about Anderson either way but I do think his media footprint is sometimes a little out of proportion with his playing skills. That's a fancy way of saying he's not really a good enough player to make as much noise as he sometimes does.

Not just the Saints... Can't remember who it was that said it but I read an article not too long ago which stated that this has basically become the norm among the younger GMs of the league, Fitterer included. Not a big fan of it myself but apparently this is standard operating procedure now, so the people who roll their eyes every time they hear the word "restructure" are gonna have their corneas spinning. So if you're looking at those future cap estimates and thinking "wow, we've got loads of space next year", you might want to rethink.

One of the best explanations I've heard for the West Coast philosophy is that it views short passes as basically long handoffs. It's also why one of the things that WCO guys covet is players who are great at running after the catch.

Reading between the lines of comments from guys like Shaq Thompson, I think part of the problem might be that a portion of the team just isn't buying what Matt Rhule is selling. If the people you're trying to lead don't believe in you, it doesn't matter how you deliver your message.

Reports were that Mayfield was no more interested in the Panthers than the Panthers were in him. I can understand our position might change if his price gets lowered, but is there any indication he's changed his mind about playing for the Panthers?

The thing I want right now is leadership with intelligence. If they're smart, I don't care if they're manic like Bill Cowher or stoic like Tom Landry.

That happened back when "draft experts" were a rarity. Now there are tons of them, and probably a good 90% or more are better at it than McShay. You've got former GMs, scouts and personnel guys who have actually done the job now taking part in draft talk all over the internet and the airwaves. So with all that out there, what's the value of a guy with McShay's meager resume? I miss seeing Floyd Reese on ESPN myself. He was great.
