I would trade the three first rounders, were it my personal decision. You just don't get many opportunities to get player of his caliber that early in their career. You may be technically talking about the guy who is the best player in franchise history and saying that ISN'T a leap for once. But it is a steep price to pay, if that were indeed the price.

No one likes to give away first round picks but at least we might be in a situation now where we can be more successful OUTSIDE the first round for a change. Additionally, keep in mind that IF your move to get Watson works out....those first round draft picks are going to be in the 20-32 range.

Cap hit 2021: $10.54 mil 2022: $35 mil 2023: $37 mil ($17 mil is a roster bonus, so this is essentially an opt out year if necessary) 2024: $32 mil 2025: $32 mil It gets a little high but if the cap starts going back up in 2022, it will end up looking like Cam's deal did in Carolina towards the end. Basically a pretty reasonable deal. It helps us a lot to have that $5.4 mil prorated bonus hit off the books.

The only real discussion is proven vs. unproven entity and the costs associated with each. Watson's value is astronomical. The value of the #8 overall pick his high, although yet to be determined because we don't even know if Fields, Lance or Wilson are still on the board at that point. None of the QB's in the draft, Lawrence included, would make me pass on taking a look at a deal for Watson if he were actually available. The cost may make my choice to go draft a guy easier but you can bet I would be on the phone talking to Houston.

I would say the likelihood of Wilson, Fields and Lance all being top 10 NFL QB's is slim to none.

This is actually why I have a hard and fast rule about a rookie needing to sign a second contract with us before I will buy their jersey.

I think Stafford could certainly still have plenty left in the tank. I do agree that I would want it to be at the right price.

We can get rid of him if they chose to get rid of him. It may not make the most sense on paper but we are still in the rebuilding, so cutting bait might actually make sense if you have no plans on letting him see the field.

I would amend that to say "recent history." There are lots of Super Bowl winning QB's that are on other teams than they were drafted by. Not as many in the last 15 years but there is also a certain QB who keeps skewing that number, as well.

Even if we did keep both(and we absolutely wouldn't) we would be under $50 mil in 2021 and 2022. Remember, all the prorated bonus money for Stafford stays with the Lions. His actual pay would be $20 mil in 2021 and $23 mil in 2022. That's actually less than what we would be paying Teddy.

Yeah, I mean....I just don't view that was quite the same kind of pressure. That takes a while to get bad enough to make a move and only if Teddy is just out there shitting the bed.

Well given the amount of winning seasons in franchise history(7 winning seasons in 26 years of existence), I'd say we are a bottom third franchise. The only argument to be made for us being in the middle portion of the league are the two SB appearances and our 22nd ranked all-time winning percentage. Not super strong arguments, IMO.

He isn't a free agent, he is under contract for the next two seasons. He isn't going to have much of a choice in the hypothetical "Lions move on from Matt Stafford" scenario. This isn't like the Watson situation.

I don't think the staff is going to much under much actual pressure. Rhule is basically getting to do his own thing for now. Who would pressure him? Tepper? I don't see that as likely. I think if Teddy is still with the team in 2021 AND we have drafted a QB at #8, the best player will play for us. If the coaches think the rookie is ready to go, we are gonna start the rookie. That said, we did start a lot more veteran guys early last season that saw less and less time as the season went on(Weatherly, Whitehead, etc).

Well Jake was 29 when we signed him and we got plenty of usage out of him. Wasn't Beuerlein like 29/30 when we signed him and took over as starter at 32/33? 32/33 isn't really that old for a modern NFL QB. He could easily play 6-8 more years if he takes care of himself and wants to play that long.

On the other hand, it is much easier to jettison those bad picks now than it was a little over a decade ago. Arizona was swiftly able to recover from their mistake on Josh Rosen. Washington cut bait from Dwayne Haskins. It hurts but at least you don't have a massive salary to jettison when you fug it up.

Choose the most likely.

Remember Cleveland spamming QB picks for a long time? That worked well for so many years.....
