That’s 100% true. I actually think he has some optimism HC traits. don’t love him wanting to be the playcaller/HC combo. I mean he wasn’t some whiz kid OC. Think that’s something very few coaches pull off well.
-
If there was a 3rd option of C that was: push/about the same I think it would have gotten some votes. Did the worst team in the NFL attempt to get better? Sure. So did teams 1-31. last year our main problem IMO was nothing fit together offensively. Coaches that preferred X or Z. QB suited and needing Y. Talent didn’t pair well with any of it. Bad marriages. I still feel like the coach, QB and talent don’t sync up.
-
Talent? Just slightly better. D is musically chairs. I’d call it a push until play shows otherwise. We lost folks. Got folks. Hard to call it different than that IMO. overall on O I would say only slightly better and with the emphasis on OL. But that’s really all we have done outside of swapping Chark for Johnson. Which I still don’t view that outside spot as a major game changer given the QB is Bryce. Coaching? Slightly better. Frank Reich was horrific here. Bar on the floor. So any HC should be able to do better. ST coach last year showed more competency than Frank.

Teams generally don’t chase after a 1 year OC who ran a bottom of the league offense….in a bad division. l mean, Tepper worked himself into a corner. He hired what he could. Hopefully they surprise. but this is just the past 4 offseason on repeat in terms of how large % is going to view what Carolina is doing. Last year Fitterer created the best team since 2003. Easily contend for the playoffs. People were willing to spin McAdoo and Rhule as a good pairing the year prior. We were going to save Sam Darnold and Teddy was a clown for daring to question this staff. we are the worst team in professional sports. Being a fan doesn’t mean I need to pretend each year they have figured it out and are now smart….no one else even looked at our HC/GM. What would a reasonable guess be as to why only the worst team in all of pro sports going there be? I don’t need the Panther to be good. Good or bad, they are my team and entertaining. I mean if things look suspect that’s just how I feel and say it…if I was a Steeler fan and my coach/team found a way every year no matter what to win….well, I’d lean toward them be smarter than me and blindly optimistic. Teams earn what they earn.

Nah, Baker definitely wasn’t better than he was a couple seasons he had in Clev. I mean, he was that guy. That’s the dude we thought we were getting. We just happen to be a QBs worst nightmare. Bakers best seasons are his 11-5 season, his rookie season and his Tampa season. You can play with the order but you do it because it’s all comparable. Literally no QB in NFL history produces an identical final stat line in different years….there is always going to be some slight difference. the defensive part….is being defensive about Canales. Because the only QB you can claim he was a QB whisperer for was Geno….the dude that walked in on a team that won 10+ for a decade. Canales had 1 year as a NFL OC where he lead the 20th ranked O in a trash division. And only Carolina talked to him. Everyone isn’t going to be searching and arguing everything to positive given our consistent track record. Maybe he surprises. Maybe Morgan too. They certainly aren’t excitable hires though
-
Wilson was a 5 time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champ before Canales became a QB coach. Point is simply you can’t credit him as a QB whisperer with Wilson as an example of it.
-
Yeah, because you can get them in the mid to late rounds of the draft. Not sign Miles Sanders types. But you got to actually draft them.
-
meh, if they could of merely got the most AVERAGE of ACC QB play from either of his 5 star QBs.....they would have been in the college playoff every year during this "down window". That's not the transfer portal getting him. That's 2 back to back 5 star QBs not even being middle of the road ACC caliber. Maybe it will get him. I don't think he cares. Which isn't a secret.

I think largely, he is going to stick with his model. He wants kids to come to Clemson buy in. Spend 4 years. Get their degree. Leave as better people. and I think there still will be a place for that model. Every parent nor kid is going to chase a new check every year. Dabo offers an environment that is appealing to a lot of southern families. It's not like the Clemson boys aren't getting money either. I mean people love to hate on Dabo, call him fake.....then ignore how his dudes have stuck around pre NIL with first round NFL money on the table......and just wanted to stay and be college kids there with him. I mean, especially DL talent. Dabo ain't fake. You ain't got to like him and 100% get that. He isn't going to be everyone cup of tea.

Matt Millers' 7 Round Mock (Panthers info only)
CRA replied to SaltAndPepper's topic in Carolina Panthers
I do think you can talk about what we can see....and Bryce Young to date, presents more like an Eli Manning type at QB than a Cam Newton in terms of how he carries himself. I mean, there isn't one path/way to do things. end of the day, Eli got 2 rings. -

yep, it's like looking up a WR and seeing he is 5-9 and thinking that means he is similar to Steve Smith. I'm a Gamecock hater....and even I want the gamble on Leggette after watching him this year. Mingo and Leggette didn't play the same game at WR. And Mingo never saw the success Leggette did at his college peak. -
Clemson remains the 2nd best team of the college football playoff era. I mean, that's the hate summed up in reality.

Tomlin on Diontae as a Panther gives me some anxiety
CRA replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
yeah, Johnson would be more of an 89 classic headcase WR than a DJ Moore get-along guy. 89 made a drowning Clausen's life probably tougher than it had to be. -
Wilson was already a pro bowl, all pro, super bowl champ and then Canales arrived. Baker literally was Baker everywhere but Carolina. And we proved in that window, we could even make Sam Darnold look worse than NY Sam. I mean, I'll concede Geno. That's a legit example of a QB being different. But that also Geno stepping into a team that was winning 10+ every season for a decade. I mean, I'm just at the show me stage. I'm not buying into hype any longer. Past 4 years have all been the same thing. Just doesn't feel any different for me yet.

he is a true poor man's CMC and he 100% should be a role player in a backfield at the next level. Not the dude. That should never be the expectation there. -

I'd love Shipley in around the 4th. I think he could have immediate impact in a RB committee being the rec option. I think as rookie he likely could outplay everyone here as receiver out of the backfield. Thomas doesn't rank super high on my list of DL players out of Clemson the last several years. I'd like him in a 4-3 better than 3-4 look. He never lived up to what he was supposed to in college. -
I still really wish Gantt wasn't working for Tepper during the Tepper era. That's probably why Tepper has him working for him.
-
it's part of the process. the Panther fan torture process. Got to get you high first leading up to the season.

as Clemson fan.....I hope we don't break the Clemson drought by drafting a Clemson DB. -
I'd be fine with me. Homer in me wants Shipley in the 4th if he fell there. I think he could come in pretty quickly and be a better 3rd down RB than the dudes we have.
-
worded poorly. But I take it as last/final year as a Panther. Theilen is most likely done here after this year. Johnson most likely is just a one year rental if playing the odds. then it goes into big picture, and really that is just Mingo that projects out long term. ISM I guess.
-
I think the 4th round is where you should target RBs. You aren't going to find a CMC but that's where you build your RB committee. Dudes drafted in the 4th round were 2nd round talent in prior eras. Get a pass catching RB in this draft that can pass block.
-
I think figuring out if Bryce is the plan past this season and fixing the O…..is the most important thing in 2024. I don’t care about winning some random this year. Record doesn’t matter We don’t know if we even have a legit starter at C. So it’s competition I want for that. Loser is depth
-
I mean we fixed our OL….by moving a meh OG into the starting C spot. Not sure the OL is fixed yet. Think they still got some work in FA there. Draft isn’t going to solve that. I’d feel better with an option B at center competing with a Corbett.

I mean, after the 89 game... 89 wasn't even good and lucked his way into being our nightmare for the day. I mean big Dexter Lawerence might make the real plays or someone and Burns cleans it up and picks up the fumble after he spleens Bryce Young.
