Chicago's OL want ranked higher in PFF mainly due to run blocking. They also battled injuries all year so it was constantly shuffled. https://www.si.com/nfl/bears/news/grading-the-bears-on-2022-season Their pass blocking was so bad it hid the fact they ran for more yards than any Bears team ever and the most in the league. More than 650 yards of Justin Fields' 1,143 came on scrambles, which weren't planned running plays and resulted from the line's inability to protect him. He suffered a league-high 55 sacks. The line did endure nine starting lineup changes due largely to injuries, but they suffered only one bonafide season-ending injury. Only two offensive linemen had as many as five penalties—Braxton Jones (10) and Sam Mustipher (5)—and those two accounted for seven of the line's 15 holding penalties. This unit was good enough to be ranked 14th best offensive line by Pro Football Focus. They're overrated. This was a ranking skewed greatly by their status as the top rushing team for the first time since 1986, and that rushing total was skewed greatly by Fields' scrambling. Basically their OL pass protection was so bad and their WR's weren't getting open so Fields HAD to run to gain yardage. However his elite scrambling gave his OL higher ratings in run blocking which is really because of their bad pass blocking? I think they broke the PFF algorithm??

Hopefully they build a team around him and help him achieve his success. If they don't and/or he struggles, yeah they will be in the market again. Year 3 is usually a big year for QBs.
-
SHHHHHH. Let the rumors continue! -Yeah Stroud really doesn't enjoy football. If I were picking in the top 8 I would stay the fug away from him.... I also head he puts ketchup on eggs and uses scissors to open chip bags.
-
Exactly. If Fields went on the trade block, what would it cost to acquire him? Now pretend Sam isn't a FA and do the same thing.... NFL GMs are aware of the potential in Fields vs ceiling of Sam and it's a pretty big gap.
-
Maybe or maybe they continue to develop their previous 1st round QB and put some talent around him. They should have some extra 1sts to move around and get their guy if they need it.
-
Meanwhile it looks like Chicago is going to get a shitload of picks for their top pick because they don't need one. Having a QB changes everything.

It's two extremes. I think Sam is who he is at this point after year 5. He looks to be a decent backup and can play well when everything is going well. Then looking at Fields he clearly has some growth to do after year two. If Chicago can get him a decent OL and some weapons next year SHOULD be a big year for him if not then there will definitely be questions around him in the offseason. Looking at Fields first full season as a starter he average 225 yards a game (very meh and 1/3 of them are from rushing which is fine for now, but not long term) 25 total TDs (so around 1.5 TDs a game) 11 INTS (so .66 a game) with 60.4% completion which was actually higher than Sam last year despite his best year yet.... His leading WR had just under 500 yards and 2 TDs (that's very similar to TMJ who wasn't even used all year). His TE looked like he was decent with around 500 yards and 7 TDs. With all of these issues in Chicago the Bear's offense still averaged one less PPG than us and more YPG. He looked more like a one man shows vs Carolina trying to limit their QB play. Fields definitely needs to develop as a passer, but there is a reason why the league is high on him and very indifferent on Sam. Different points in their career with very different ceilings.

Hey if our biggest concern is who our backup QB is next year then I will consider it a good offseason.
-
I couldn't have said it better myself. Well done!

So in his 423 completions for 5701 yards and 67 TDs to 9 INTs with a 68.4% completion in college he never figured out how to make a layered throw? I get needing a mental adjustment from OSU to the NFL but he can throw the ball physically. Mentally he needs work... Looking at his draft profiles the weaknesses are getting off his first read and footwork in the pocket. Nothing to do with throwing ability. In fact you will see constantly able to make throws at all 3 levels mentioned.

One is developing with a defensive HC, no OL, and no weapons outside of Moony. Fields is projecting to get better which is why he would cost so much more to acquire. Darnold is what he is (a decent backup who isn’t consistent) and there is nothing wrong with that. Fields passer rating increased as the season progressed while Darnold falls apart that last game. Fields isn’t there yet as a passer, but he has potential to get there. The NFL sets the price to acquire these QBs is one is available as a FA for around $5 million there is usually a reason…
-
It's almost like we don't hold a 2nd year player starting his first full season to same level as a 5th year vet making $20 million.....
-
Which plan is that? The OL punching nuts plan?
-
Wait you think Fields doesn't have the PHYSICAL ability to make elite NFL throws??? He needs to work mentally on reads, footwork etc, but physically he is good to go.
-
I mean you were his top fan before the game. He has a top 5 worst QB performance in history of the NFL and you think it wasn't his fault at all.... I think you might be just a little bit bias. For the record I don't think he is terrible. He is just inconsistent. If something goes wrong during play I think he will make a mistake more times than not. If everything is going fine he looks the part. He can run, make NFL throws, and seems like a good teammate.
-
Sam had a NFL record setting terrible rating. His team kept the game close despite Sam shitting the bed. That’s what you get with Sam. If the running game is rolling and WRs are open Sam can look the part. If anything goes wrong it’s a complete disaster. He is just mentally weak for the position. That’s nothing bad against him as most people are.

Teddy never played as bad as Sam did and Teddy had Erving as his LT… Sam had a legit OL with one of our top rushing attacks we have had in a while. Look how great our running game was in the games he won, Teddy never had that. Wait Robby had a career year when Sam wasn’t his QB? That’s odd…. How many games did Sam win last year when he played much more of the season? Sam also can’t stay healthy and never has for a full season.
-
Teddy did fine with a similar roster, but worse OL.
-
He is delusional. Fields can't throw and Sam's guys can't get open? Umm maybe it's the other way around....

Stroud can add weight to his frame and be an average sized NFL QB. Stroud is an inch taller than Rodgers/Mahomes and weighs 7 less pounds. Young is a good bit smaller with a small frame and already got hurt last year in college. Young's style also concerns me a little to pair with his frame. He likes to run around to extend plays which is great, but leads to more hits than Stroud's quick read passes.

He looks like a steal considering where they got him. At worst he is a capable backup, at best he is their future QB. -

You said they also say it when it’s a bad class. Who is saying it about this class? -

As a neutral Auburn fan I agree. He might be the top pick… -

Who is “they?” These writers that have 4 going in the top 10? Maybe “they” is just you… Who thinks we need to draft an OL at 9? Just you again? -

Purdy has a lot going for him in SF. HC, OL, TE, RB, and WR1 are some of the league’s best. Howell looked decent with much less in Washington.
