He was bad with Urban Meyer. Came to us recovering from an injury last year. I’m at least intrigued to see what Wilks can do with him. Taylor flashed enough last year to be a nice insurance policy.

I think your last sentence kind of summarizes where I’m at. The gap between Sam and Baker is big and that is not because Baker is great, but more because Sam struggles are that bad during games. Baker has proven he can take the right team to the playoffs and we acquired him to be our starter. May the best man win is a nice mentality when the players are on a more even playing ability. Sam doesn’t need to see the field again IMO. There is no good that can come from it. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if we unloaded Sam for whatever cheap ass offer we get like we did Teddy. Once we know a QB isn’t the answer we want to cut ties with them pretty quickly (especially now that we have better options on the roster).

Baker Mayfield has a lot to prove, period!

Wasn’t that Wesley Walls too? -

Honestly I don’t think many think he is absolutely the guy. I think he is an upgrade (maybe mid level QB) that we acquired for cheap with little to no long term investment. I don’t know if he can even get us to the playoffs, but I hope he will provide us with an actual competent offense versus what I could barely watch last year while giving Corral a year to get ready. If he turns out to be the guy then great! If he struggles then we can move on after this season with no financial burden. -

We have seen both players play as starting QBs in this league. It’s pointless to see who practices better. Say we acquired Stafford last year (extreme case obviously). Are we going to let PJ Walker start over him if he lights up practice? Baker is an established starter and Sam has established himself as not fit to start. He can light up practice but will see ghosts when the real game starts.

Wilks is legit! That was our low key best staff hire outside of maybe Campen…

Again, Smitty is cautiously optimistic about Mayfield

At least it will be very easy to walk away if he fails. No future 2nd and $18.5 million dollar extension. -

You are going to have a hard time convincing anyone Baker is better than Burrow right now.... -
He is only 14?!?!?!?! Damn...

They have talent, but CJ Henderson really needs to show something this year. Providing Horn lives up to expectations, he and DJax should be a nice 1 and 2 plus Woods will free up Chinn. I think the concern is the run defense.

Robbie should like this “All Carolina had to give up was a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick that could become a fourth-rounder based on playing time and roughly $5 million in salary,” Spielberger writes. “Since Mayfield and Darnold were taken with the No. 1 and No. 3 overall picks in the 2018 Draft, Mayfield has earned an 80.0 passing grade compared to Darnold’s 58.5. He has a 6.1% big-time-throw rate (6th) compared to Darnold’s 3.6% (51st).”

Yeah exactly. You can win and be competitive as long as you have decent play from the position. Darnold was far from decent. Jake at the middle of the pack go to as many Super Bowls and an elite talent like Cam did for us. People seem stuck on this we have to get a top 5 QB on suck until we do... -
That has so many variables in it to really worry about. 1. How good did HE play? Was it lighting it up and our defense letting him down? 2. What kind of contract is being offered? Mid level? Top 10? Getting us past 5 wins will be a good start. Helps us become somewhat respectable so the Staffords, Russ Wilsons, Watsons (thank God we dodged that) will actually consider us if another becomes available. Also we can just trade up and grab a top rated QB if we find one we like like the Chiefs did with Mahomes or the Niners are attempting with Lance. Staying at the bottom of the NFL and trying to draft one CAN work, but it also can turn into us with Cam's Panthers (good QB with not enough cast), Stafford with the Lions, Texans with Carr, Bengals with Palmer, Goff with the Rams, Bradford with the Rams, JaMarcus with the Raiders, Winston with the Bucs even Lawrence struggled with the Jags (jury is still out, but he didn't look like the next Andrew Luck last year). Trying to land a Burrow or Manning will be an extremely rare occurrence IMO. Build a team to win and be as competitive as possible and when the opportunity comes to acquire a talented QB pounce on it. That just seems more likely IMO then trying to stay at the bottom of the league until we find an elite QB.

If he blows then he walks into FA without costing us any more money. That’s one of the best parts about this trade IMO.

Give me 2020 Robbie and I’ll be happy. 21 Robbie wasn’t worth the headache…
