Peppers was basketball player with little-to-no football background we signed off the street to play TE?
-
That's where a strong-willed football player comes into play. Our best players have always been film/ball junkies. This guy grew up on football (dad was a high school HC ) and has played several potions since high school. Sounds familiar to another TE we had? Olsen has admitted many times that he had to put in the extra effort because he wasn't an elite athlete. It's not like we've ever had a TE whisperer on our staffs in the past and have turned out some solid dudes. If we can get another WR to contribute, there will be too many guys for the defense to focus in on Warren. Rumors are Sean Peyton is eyeballing him in Denver to fill a Taysom Hill type role.

No risk and literally no point. We have tried this before with basketball players who actually HAD a football background as well. All of them flopped. At best, training camp and practice squad fodder.
-
That's the thing, he's this good and not even a finished product. A lot of great TEs don't have elite twitch and suddenness to them. He's a football player through and through and I feel that once he gets to eat/sleep football 24/7 in the NFL, he's going to hone his route tree while refining his breaks/cuts. My only knock on him is he's a bit stiff, which is hampers crisp route running. Warren strikes me as a gym rat football junkie and I can see that cleaned up in short order...in the course of a season or less. Unless your name is Brock Bowers, TEs usually don't set the League on fire their rookie season. I could see him contributing heavily in year 1, none-the-less.

Ryan Fowler: Panthers hosting Texas A&M Shemar Stewart

He'll be there. Only the Panthers value him this high. -

He's gonna be the pick at #8, so I guess we can start looking at #57. -
Nah guys, we are FINE at TE. Dragging dudes off the streets with zero football experience. Mud, meet wall. Crap, at least find some D-II TE to develop. Full panic mode now that THE Ian Thomas has left the building. The team is too inundated--100% full concentration---on which 'square peg' situational pass rusher we are going to trying to force into a 'round hole' on this team at pick #8. Morgan: 'Hey, just go find some really tall guy to play TE while we do important work over here on Edge guys.' Scout: 'How much football background does he need?' Morgan: 'Who cares? We have all these pass rushers we have to sort through.' *Some time later* Scout: 'Hey Dan, I found some dude nearly 7 foot tall playing rec ball down at the YMCA.' Morgan: 'Cool, how many years did he start at TE in college?' Scout: 'None, he's never played TE or football...ever--but, but, you said you didn't care about that?' Morgan: 'Honestly I don't...let's give him a minimum deal; and for crying out loud let me get back to the slew of pass rushers that all have holes in their game!'

From a Saints' fan prospective. If we pass on Warren and he is there at #8 and the Saints draft him, dude will haunt us for YEARS. (First 9-1/2 minutes.)

If we don't need a QB, we aren't sold on a WR at #8, why not take a play maker at TE? Dude looks like a young Greg Olsen and let's face it, we have been dog poo since we last had a legit TE1 on this team. Coincidence? Maybe, or maybe a QBs best friend has been missing on this roster for nearly a decade. All the elite teams have a legit TE1, we had Ian Thomas until now. While I like Sanders, he's not Kelsey or Kittle. Time to change our luck:

Ward 1, Hunter, maybe 2. Per McShay

Funny as crap, but I see what he did. Sorta the 'tuck rule'--so mid-pass he had second thoughts and tried to pull the ball down, but since he has such small hands to avoid the ball slipping out due to the inertia of aborted pass, he had to cradle the ball for security and realized he just had to eat it instead of fumbling, which he did anyhow. -

How many players that were drafted by the Panthers that are not currently on or just got off of (draft class of '21) their rookie deals still on the team? Two-Moton'17 and Brown '20. We fugging suck at developing talent. -

The Steelers didn't move up for Pickett, he was at their original draft slot and he was a home town kid too. They ain't moving up for Sanders, at least not that high. If he drops outside of the top 10, they might make a move. Jaxson Dart seems to be the a popular match for them. -

I get all of that. My problem is production, a one-year wonder whose stats are good, but far from eye-popping, especially for a top 10 prospect. He needs developing. We are not developers, refiners/tweaking--yes, but we suck at molding the raw athletic types from word go. Yet that what this front office drools over. I have to give Marty Hurney some credit, in the first round he always took BPA that was as close to Pro ready as possible. He at least waited until day 2 to find the development projects that rarely panned out. -

Me too, but Graham would a least make them pause for a second or two before turning the card in for Walker. The idea of Graham and Brown together is enticing, but probably not enough to kick Walker to the curb. Dude probably already has his Panthers draft day hat in hand. -

Not too sure about that. I've seen really recent mocks--since his Pro Day--where he falls completely out of round 1. So the idea of teams jumping at the opportunity to trade up for him is a probably a pipe dream. -
Panthers Prospect Visits/Meetings (Final Update-4/22)

I realize that, but this was a while ago when McCord was projecting as a mid day 3 selection, obviously before Dalton re-signed. Also, I wouldn't take any QB from this draft in second round. -

Chinn was a S/NLB (Buffalo nickle) hybrid. Yes, it makes sense. Thomas Davis did it back in the day, but even he struggled even before the ACL injuries. Finally he settled in to LB and ditched safety altogether. -

Luvu was a FA that was coming into his prime. Yes, he hit his stride here, but we didn't draft and mold him during his first contract. So your comparison isn't exactly apple-to-apples either. -

Next year we draft a QB, PERIOD, either to replace or back up Bryce. It's FAR too stacked to completely sit it out. -

I was in favor of taking shot at Kyle McCord in the 5th, but he's jumped...BIG time. He may go as high as late 2nd! He's projecting in the Milroe/Ewers tier now. -

That's part of my problem, Walker is a 'tweener and we fug those guys up--royally. See Jeremy Chinn. Not only that, able to play two positions is very different than dominating at one. This isn't the OL where the ability to play multiple positions is seen as a plus, or even a requirement. -

This Carson Schwesinger's season stats: CRUSHES Jalon Walker's production that happens to be a second round prospect high second, but day 2 none-the-less. -

I'm not sold on Walker. I don't dislike the kid, but I think #8 is too high for him. -

There will be an early run on OTs, IMO. Sanders falls. How far? How about I'm seeing recent mocks having the Steelers drafting Dart at #21 WITH Sanders still on the board. I'm telling you, I saw just some snippets of Sanders Pro Day and it looked like he was throwing a medicine ball instead of a football. Very little zip and the ball looked oversized/cumbersome to throw. -

Raiders are the only wildcard. Jets are going Warren or OT BPA with an outside chance of Tet. They are drafting someone to help out the QB, period, either in pass pro or a receiving outlet. Raiders are looking hard at Jeanty, but no telling what they do.
