  1. What will you see? Tons of holes in the roster. Guys you thought you really liked getting benched, and those you never heard of until preseason getting reps. A lot of close games that they end up losing. People you wouldn't expect to become leaders leading, and those that are supposed to be leaders letting you down. The fanbase at odds with one another on whose fault it is, the new coach or they players that they have been told are good. It's growing year, buckle up.
  2. No it would not require another DL option because the Panthers aren't going to be very competitive this year and they know this. Right now, I think they are more concerned about measuring what they currently have against hungry guys and saving resources for next offseason. Anyone who thinks the Panthers are just "a few guys away" need to just take this season off before they are disappointed. There will be holes all over the roster. However I'm willing to bet despite the adversity, this new group and it's churn of competition will still win more than 2 games.
  3. A third round pick is a joke. There's no way a "league source" would think a third rounder would be equal compensation unless your "league source" really wants Burns to stay in Carolina. Burns could go for a late 1st, pair of 2nd rounders, or a buffet of 2s/3s/4s. He isn't going anywhere for a single 3. The salary cap doesn't matter because whoever gets him will have to extend him anyways, you're paying to be the one that has the right to extend him for the next 4-5 years.
  4. They can probably manage to get a 1st for him in the mid-high 20s. If not, they could likely get two 2nds for him. One this season and another next year to replace the missing one from the BY trade.
  5. Only way I see something like this is if Wilson is sitting on his couch next year (which is completely possible) and something happens to to Bryce early in the season. I could see Wilson being brought in just due to his past with Canales. I don't think they would bring Wilson in to rub shoulders in the QB room, nor do I think his ego would allow it.
  6. I'd keep an eye on on Jonah Williams if he makes it to FA.
  7. Yeah so back to my messages around week 1- Everything I was being told then was that they finally agreed on the $/yr amount but then the guaranteed amount was off. So what Joe is saying correlates with what I had figured. Panthers possibly went to 27m/yr then backed off off on gtd as part of the offer.
  8. I think it's possible but to be fair, I think this offseason will be more about gathering a hoard of average "base" players to replace a ton of below average or awful ones.. maybe 1 or 2 splashy types.
  9. This video with Merril Hoge is before the draft last season. He expresses why he believes CJ Stroud was the better QB. He did not call Young a bust but he definitely pointed out some of the weaknesses that were displayed later on during the season. Hoge also called Johnny Manziel a bust prior to his draft and just recently ripped Caleb Williams as "nothing special".
  10. Just in my time around the Panthers, this offseason already shows more optimism than in years past for fans. It really appears that David Tepper is taking steps back and will continue to do so as long as his confidence remains in his new 3-headed monster (Morgan, Tilis, Canales). The firings of Rajack, Fitterer, and Suleiman, which were three fellows buried deep in the owner’s trust a year ago speaks volumes. Dan Morgan’s more traditional talent evaluation system proved more accurate than the different layers of analytics “Frankenstein-ed” together in the front office. The simplicity is also a breath of fresh air in a building where complication and collaboration on repeat has ran rampant and it brings a clear message- they have to start doing the basic things right. Looking at the state of the franchise now, and the mess that fills BOA stadium, here are a few things I expect to see this offseason: · They will prefer to resign Burns at their price but aren’t afraid to trade him for draft capital, and will before they let him walk. · Brown and Luvu will get extensions, Chinn does not have a place on EJ Evero’s defense unless he agrees to play Linebacker which is unlikely. · Shaq Thompson has probably played his last game- I expect most of the capital to be invested into Corner and DL help. The Panthers will probably “rent” an edge this year should Burns not return. · The offense is going to mirror the Seahawks from the last few years more than the Buccaneers from last season. The Panthers are already built for the run, the Buccaneers were not. I expect for the sake of resources you will see a heavy run game mixed in with the PA Pass that is the cornerstone of the Canales’ offense. Think old school ground-n-pound with the crossers and deep outs. · I don’t expect a frenzy of activity at WR. Panthers probably add a WR1 in FA, and maybe a mid-level guy in the draft or FA after the draft. The focus will be more about solidifying the OL and getting somebody to compliment Hubbard. Much of the reason for the lack of separation last season was due to scheme not WR ability. · There will be veteran QB insurance. While this is likely to be filled by Dalton, I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody else is brought in. First, to push the QB room along in competition and development. Second, should Bryce go down OR if there is no clear progression by midseason and the staff wants to justify their system works with different pieces ...
  11. Important Note: The Panthers article that Darin Gantt just released came out after I wrote this. It indicates that both Canales and Morgan will individually report to Tepper. I am still under the impression that there will be a buffer hired between them. Looks like to be more of the executive type than the AGM I noted earlier. Looks very similar to a San Francisco structure as I noted before. Paraag Marathe serves in a buffer type role between York and Lynch/Shanahan. Interesting because Sportsology assisted in setting up that structure as well.
  12. For those that have asked me, here are my two cents... Canales is a good hire for the team’s current situation. Carolina was looking for a younger "offensive minded" guy and they finally found him. From what I am hearing, I would still expect another hire in the front office to replace Samir Suleiman. What is unclear is whether this position will be an Assistant General Manager type role or a higher-level executive that separates Tepper from Morgan. I imagine it will be more of an AGM type. Tepper appears to have installed quite a bit of trust in his new GM and I doubt he is willing to separate himself further already. He is probably going to need some time to adjust to Dan’s way of doing things before he steps back anymore. It looks like Morgan didn’t have to do much campaigning for Canales either. Dave blew everyone away at the interview and jumped to the front of the line despite the familiarity with Morgan. It will be important for Carolina to find a solid Defensive Coordinator to pair with him. It looks as if the plan is to retain Ejiro Evero but that remains to be seen pending his Head Coaching candidacy and the new Head Coach’s approval. There are also quite a bit of folks pushing for Evero to replace Morris in LA. The Rams are one of his former employers and much closer to home. Carolina will likely block anything lateral from happening. BUT... Carolina’s roster is still mostly built to support a 4-3 Defense. Most of Morgan’s career has either been playing in or helping build a 4-3 defense, so if Carolina doesn’t want to finish going through the 3-4 transition this offseason, they could potentially save resources and take a step back by letting Evero go where he wishes. IF they feel like they can find a suitable replacement (Leslie Frazier) but this is unlikely. I think the most interesting position being filled will be Offensive Coordinator. It will be intriguing to see if Canales brings along one of his assistants like Brad Idzik or Thad Lewis. He could go out and find somebody a little more experienced that can assist him during this transition in his young career- Darrell Bevell could be a guy if he goes this route. I also imagine Jim Caldwell will be a nearby resource for young Canales whether he wants him or not. You can't just go off of Canales’ league connections either in a situation like this, Morgan has contacts throughout the league from his time as a player and in Buffalo that can help build this staff. Congrats to Mr. Canales, he has his work cut out for him.
  13. Oh for sure, which is why I think just about every move this week is calculated. I don't think coincidences exist this week. I think Ejiro is on the table in Carolina but very much near the edge. I think he may be getting some looks through the league to satisfy the RR but I think his interviews here are more of a play to keep him happy and engaged in an effort to possibly align him as DC with the next HC. (Should the next HC feel compatible). I am willing to eat my crow in front of the message board should the opposite happen though.
  14. Something to keep in mind. Once Raheem Morris and Dave Canales officially interview today, the Panthers meet the Rooney Rule requirements and can hire a HC at any point after that. There is the possibility that the Canales hype was covering for the Vrabel interview. It seems like the news didn't break that he was interviewing in Carolina until after he was on his way out of Atlanta. I think Vrabel is a Wild Card, he doesn't bring the flashy type of football that Tepper likes and I doubt they get along much at all but Morgan could be the buffer. I still think Canales or Quinn could be in play just off of their connections to Dan Morgan but I just don't think the Panthers are ready to commit to either one yet. Definitely much more likely chance of Canales over Quinn though. I think Macdonald has a better chance than Monken out of the Baltimore crowd. He's young, been with John H. a while, has a strong personality, and giant finance brain. Prior to this season and his time at Georgia, Monken had a spotty career. He's also an older guy and I don't believe he brings that structure that they are looking for. He's much more of the Xs/Os type guy. I imagine the Panthers wait on Ben Johnson until next week. I think you at least have to bring him down to Charlotte and take your shot in person. I think his chances of going to Washington are pretty high. Only way I see that not happening is if Macdonald gets in there first and pulls it out from under him. In no particular order I would have to say: Canales, Macdonald, Monken, and Vrabel as the wild card.
  15. Not really. It was reported they were fond of both coordinators but that cooled down after the interviews. That could mean anything. I can see Macdonald getting another interview though, I'm not really sure if Todd Monken's personality is what they are looking but I could be wrong. Macdonald is really engaging leader and has the brains to back it up.
  16. I've been wondering when this was going to happen. One of the biggest things Carolina is looking for is structure and accountability. Vrabel's past defensive schemes are also very similar to EEs and I imagine he would be open to keeping him around. It has also been rumored that Vrabel has Arthur Smith on his OC shortlist- I doubt Atlanta responded well to that. It is definitely a wild card possibility.
  17. Johnson is the obvious front runner, but likely a long shot. Personally, I think all of the Canales hype is an intentional diversion until the Panthers satisfy the Rooney Rule since nobody else is really interested in him. The big question is who is the diversion for?
  18. The Morgan hire mirrors the Lynch hire when Sportsology helped San Francisco a few years back. It’s been my understanding for a while now that Morgan was the cynic of the group and was always on the outside until this season. For those around it became more apparent that Tepper was seen walking, talking, and sitting with Morgan at practice, games and events more and more as the season progressed. Just speculation but that sure indicates that he may have shared some perspective that turned out to be true. Frankly, I’m not surprised at the decision. I feel that the emphasis on him also being the “President of Football Ops” also indicates that he will be a buffer between the HC and Owner which was likely highly recommended by Sportsology (Look at Roseman and Snead on the other two teams they have assisted). I still think somebody like Tilis or Matteo could come in and be the “numbers” guy in an AGM role or similar.
  19. I wouldn’t be too discouraged about Morgan, even if they don’t hire anyone above him. Morgan had a successful career building until he was paired with Fitterer. Nobody really knows what opinions he brought to the table that Scott may have countered or overruled. I feel like he may have been right a lot considering how he wasn’t thrown out with Scott. I would trust Sportsology as well. They don’t have a lot of history in the NFL but the things they have dealt with has turned successful.
  20. Sorry guys wish I had something this time. Like I said Thursday, I figured they had because they had interviewed all the candidates at least once. Morgan is likely a strong possibility but that doesn’t mean they don’t bring in a President or Operations Director over him. What I know about the Panthers, I imagine the they have candidates they like for different roles. Meaning they have guys in the second round they like for Ops Director/GM and they probably have guys they like for AGM to replace Dan.
  21. Precisely why I referred to the article insinuating Halaby was the favorite and he was going to bring Johnson along ostensibly just because they work in the same building was lazy reporting and very misleading.
  22. Pretty quiet. Also, I’m only speculating that it’s moving into Phase II because all of the Phase I guys have been interviewed or scheduled. I am really only hearing distant inaudible echos this time around.
  23. Brown from the NYG interviewed very early on. I don’t think it was reported. I think Disner and Greenberg have either already interviewed or are getting wrapped up today/tomorrow. Interview process is moving into phase II.
  24. It’s definitely a possibility, he is very well liked. My understanding is they are done with initial GM interviews and are starting final interviews today or tomorrow. This candidate pool was very diverse. There are a few that could be Head of Operations types, some that could be GMs, and some that could probably take a “promotion” by filling the assistant GM role. You also have to remember the Morgan info could be leaked intentionally to cause misdirection among the other teams.
