It's about that little birdie time in a few days
WhoKnows replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
I hate to bring it up, but that’s the same damn thinking that kept Hurney too long and Fitt too long. Hey, X called all the shots so Y hasn’t had his chance to shine. If we even had 1 good hit late in the draft, I’d say our scouts are worth listening to but our drafting hasn’t been “good” since 2017. We’ve pulled a couple 1sts and a couple average starters, but it’s been woefully bad with 3 different HCs and 2 different GMs. You would think our scouts would have convinced them to pick at least one great find in 6 drafts. Let’s see how the draft goes, but I’m not optimistic because scouting/GM were all here for the past 3 years. -

It’s too bad that we didn’t use the media rankings or anything else other than our draft board. We might have actually picked some decent players the past 3 drafts. -
I’m talking as a prospect. Would you put the 2022 Iowa offense in the same stratosphere as Texas? I don’t even know who Iowa’s QB was. Also, how many times did Sanders take advantage of being wide open because of the WRs? LaPorta had 657 yards on a passing offense 2037 passing yards. Sanders had 682 yards on a passing offense with just over 4000 passing yards. I still don’t think Sanders is on the level of the Kincaid/La Porta end of 1st/early 2nd prospects from the super deep 2023 TE draft.
-
I wouldn’t put Sanders close to Kincaid or La Porta. I don’t think he’s worth a 2nd. It would be a big kick in the nuts if we go TE this year instead of last year. TE should have been last year instead of Mingo. This is why we’ve sucked so bad lately. We overdraft at positions that aren’t deep instead of targeting guys who fall because it’s a deep class. Kincaid and La Porta had great seasons for rookies. TEs don’t typically have great production as rookies, even the great ones.

Calling plays? Absolutely nothing in that article said anything about calling plays. Asking Reich why he ran screen passes or runs on 80% of 3rd and longs (as an example) is a legitimate question. That’s what the article says was done. It doesn’t say Tepper called plays or even told Reich to run certain plays.
-
Did we not critique the play calling in here? It was awful. This was the worst offense we’ve ever had. Everyone was criticizing our shitty offense. I’m glad he at least acted quickly. We needed a new coach and GM. I’m still not happy with the GM choice as there’s been nothing good in house from 2018 to 2023.
-
Same page didn’t matter. Reich’s guy was the passing game coordinator and Reich called plays. Young was also the wrong choice. Lots of bad is what caused the issues, not just the non-play calling OC not meshing with Reich. We can try and make it seem like this caused all the back stabbing, but it didn’t. The poo ass job we did in the offseason and the start of the season caused that. At that point the CYA instincts came out like crazy.

Appreciate the article. Interestingly enough, this article: https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/07/24/frank-reich-panthers-training-camp-lessons-bryce-young Has a bit different twist on the hirings, especially since many assistants were Reich friends including Caldwell/Capers and the passing game coordinator. I don’t know the full details on who hired Brown and Evero but this article talks to what I said about Reich being fully prepared for his 2.0 coaching position. Like Marty, it didn’t go well. Since Evero seems to be well regarded in here, the only bad “forced” hire is Brown and Reich was calling plays until he sucked terribly.
-
Yep. I loved seeing the why can’t we be like the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes owner canned everyone when he came in, but obviously hired the right folks and they’ve done the job. Tepper’s hired poo so far, Also, the guy you posted made a big assumption jump from criticizing play calls that clearly weren’t working to telling the coach what plays he likes and what he doesn’t. Those aren’t the same. I could ask my coach why we continued to throw short passes or ran on 3rd and 7 or longer. It doesn’t mean that I’m calling plays or telling a coach which plays I like.
-
So true. I hate threads like this because most people in here don’t really read stuff. I was never mad when I heard Tepper started meeting with Reich because we sucked horribly and we weren’t supposed to suck. This article doesn’t say anything about Tepper calling plays or working on game plans before games. It basically says he was taking Reich to task because we were the worst offense in the league.
-
The main folks who report all this type of stuff in here had articles that said the reason why Reich impressed was that he brought a lot with him and that he had vetted the folks he wanted to bring with him. That was supposedly something that Fitterer and Tepper liked, that he did homework on a coaching staff. Just like everything in here, the narratives seem to change all the time depending on who you support. The people who adored Reich and the staff before the season brought up all the excuses after he was clearly on the hot seat.

Draft Rumors/Charlie Campbell Notes (Per r/NFL_Draft)
WhoKnows replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
Blood disorder, can’t remember which one. He played his entire last year and seemed to have it under control. Chiefs obviously have no problem with any care he does need. We got a long snapper that never made the team and a project fat OL who never played and was someone I posted about as looking worse than Greg Little awful in the Senior Bowl. -

Evero didn’t use Chinn at all. He played 27% of snaps. Diverse assignments and hybrid role worries me. Chinn is every bit as athletic as Sainristil in a much bigger (almost 40 pounds) package. -

PFF rankings don’t translate well. Greg Little case in point. This seems like a big reach if 43 is his best ranking. -

Maybe. We said no to Tre Smith in the 6th round due to medical concerns and where did that get us? Horn had no medical concerns and the one we didn’t take of the two has played way more. -

Damn, Burton on day 5? What’s that, Waterboy? I mean post day 3 and into day 4 is UDFAs. -
Yeah, with our luck lately, we’ll see an announcement like the Panthers have traded pick 33 for a 2024 4th, two 2024 5ths, two 2025 4ths and bag of popcorn.
-
1 week and 4 days from Panther draft time. Not sure if I’m going to bother watching day 1 or just view the picks Friday morning.
-
This is why I don’t like trading down. Fitterer loved giving away day 1 and day 2 picks and we got no impact starters. We don’t need starters, we need above average/plus/great starters or we will dwell at the bottom of the league. Right now we have Brown, Moton, Hunt, maybe Horn and a short term Clowney. There are a few around average starters and the rest are all below average to borderline bad. We desperately need to add to the first bucket so trading down to get more players lessens the odds of getting those plus/elite guys.
-
Let’s be honest guys. Strength and conditioning doesn’t matter when you at the bottom of the barrel talent wise. Like putting lipstick on a pig.
-
I agree. Unless we are getting better picks like 39 for a 2025 1st, no thanks. We’ve seen how our idiot GM traded back to cover his horrid trades and we just got lessor players overall. Just because we don’t have a 2025 2nd doesn’t mean we have to trade way back to get one. We need impact above average to elite starters. We have 33, 39 and next year’s 1st. We can’t blow those picks so let’s get the top players we need. Hopefully, we don’t F it up and actually get additional starters in the 3rd+.

100%. It’s why we’ve blown our cap every year since Marty got back and haven’t had a winning season in 6 years. We haven’t had a good draft since CMC, Moton, Samuel and Butker. Unfortunately, we also have idiots running the ship who legitimately thought we had a good talented team. Amazing that we traded away 3 of 5 actually solid players considering how bad our drafting has been. -

This is silly. $200M of that was two deals. Does it matter when two multi-year deals started? Browns deal doesn’t even really start until the 2025 season. The only deal I think doesn’t help us in the future is Clowney. If it’s not to prove or help out the offense, then it needs to be long term beneficial. Clowney will not see a playoff game with us so improving the D doesn’t help us long term.
