Round 3 Pick 94: Panthers Select Matt Corral - QB Ole Miss
MHS831 replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
Is Corral the answer? For a late third rounder, worth the risk. Even if he remains a career backup, we have a pretty good backup. -

Something like 9 5/8 taking the joke literally here. -
Round 3 Pick 94: Panthers Select Matt Corral - QB Ole Miss

We should all count our blessings that the QBs everyone was guessing would go in the first two rounds fell to the late third. That enabled us to grab one without giving up a player or several picks. I am elated. Snow-you were absolutely right about Willis and I was wrong. That hurt.- 578 replies

Round 3 Pick 94: Panthers Select Matt Corral - QB Ole Miss

Third next year and this year's fourth (late 4th round). I am OK with it as well. -

If you would have told me last week we'd get Corral and Ikwonu in the draft, I would have taken it. I like Corral's release for our offense. Howell was not a good match (long ball) But Corral's quick release and mobility is interesting. He admitted to the off the field issues--but for a third rounder, worth the risk.- 578 replies

Round 2-3 predictions. Do the Panthers get a pick,?
MHS831 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
I am not a UNC homer, but I would rather have Howell or Corral. Ridder? I want to like him, but he just reminds me of a few players that busted. -

I am not following your sarcasm, but your hindsight is spot on. So you are saying a player with a first round grade has to be drafted in the first round or the grade was wrong? The grade is based on value, not when he was actually picked. I would add that Strong from Chattanooga did not have a first round grade, but he was drafted in the first round. A lot of teams reach or pass on players based on need--not value. -

I am not sure if drafting a QB would indicate how much they like the QB or how much they dislike the other QB options. Baker: diva, lives in stadium, cost almost $19m for 1 season, inconsistent, would cost us a pick to obtain him. Jimmy G: would be rehabbing during OTAs and mini camps, cost about $25m for a season, and was mediocre on a team with Deebo and a stacked defense. -

Yes---there was talk of taking him at #2. Most people thought 2 QBs would go in the first round. I am not saying I would take him, but I was suggesting that someone in the late first might. Would you call Pickett a "late first" guy? -
Strong could be there as well. Mark my words!!

Round 2-3 predictions. Do the Panthers get a pick,?

I dunno---I can see Willis as a late first guy---and some really like 2020 Howell. I think there is about an 80% chance we move up for a QB tonight. -

Fitterer said there were multiple (more than 1, but not sure how many) QBs with "first round grades." Since I doubt they expected to have Willis, Corral, and Howell available in round 2, I expect them to do what it takes to move up to get one--he would not be doing his job if they ignored first-round-graded QBs in round 2. Not having the 38th pick overall--another way Darnold is sticking it to us. I am guessing that the Panthers are either going to trade away a player (YGM, Brown, BC, Elf, Haynes, etc), their 4th rounder, and maybe a 2023 second rounder (Forget what Fitterer said; these are unusual circumstances if the Panthers really have first-round grades) to get to the middle of the second round. Heck, if we came away with a LT and potential starting QB and nothing else, I would be elated. -
Like Grier? Kidding, sorta.

Here is what I think the discussion is today: "Is there a QB left on the board that we feel we can build around?" If the answer is "No"--do nothing. If the answer is "Yes"---you go get him in round 2, even if it is an economics decision only. Lemme splain: Baker would cost $19m for 2022 and if he plays well, $100m for the next 3 seasons. In other words, a successful Baker would cost the team $120 over 4 years--approx. $30m per year. (not getting into the diva baggage he'd bring). Howell (for example) would cost around $19m for four years. That is less than $5m per season over 4 years. So if you are worried about the "cost" of trading up, you need to consider the cost of NOT trading up.
-
Maybe--but they do not want to trade for Baker, and there is a rumor that GM's are prone to lying this time of year. In my mind, pick 50 is where the "elite" QBs (Willis, Howell, Corral) will be gone. I think Willis could go to the Giants with their second rounder--just a hunch--or Tennessee will grab him.
-
Before I read this thread, I think they will package picks from this year (4,5) and throw in a 2023 second rounder to move up into the back of the second if a top QB is there---Howell, Corral, or Willis. If I am not mistaken, they never brought in Strong for a visit. Wouldn't that be ironic in round 3?

FYI Bradley Bozeman 6th round Austin Corbett 2nd round (33rd pick overall) Pat Elflein 3rd Round Taylor Moton 2nd Round (last pick in round 2) Brady Christensen 3rd Round Ickey Ikwonu 1st Round (6th overall pick) -

I seriously thought Jax might take him at #1. I gave him about a 20% chance. I was 100% sure that he would not survive the Texans/Jets/Giants. -

I have thought that--I don't think he has the road grader ability--if they pull him a lot, OK. Bozeman is a better C than G--which is what i based my opinion on--let's see, but you might be right. -

And we have depth now as well--BC can backup both T spots while Elf can backup C/G. Brown (a mystery to me right now) can backup G. We can cut Erving-- -

You were the first to have him #1 on your board. I thought Neal and Ikwonu would be gone. -

So if Fitterer thought that there were 2 QBs worthy of top 10 grades and he took a LT (Cheers!) could it be that he was possibly telling a fib? -

FOR EXAMPLE: If they really like Howell or Willis or Ridder---as a developmental player who could start next year, I think I would cough up a future second-round pick and trade the fourth to move up. It would probably cost our 2023 second rounder and this year's fourth rounder. If we move up to grab Howell, it would mean the following: Our last 2 drafted QBs were Charlotte (area) natives. Our first and second rounder in 2022 were Charlotte (area) natives. Our first and second rounders were from NC State and UNC. Consider that last year's first rounder was from the Univ. of So. Carolina, it sure looks like we are into home cooking. Our first rounders over the past 2 years were within a 100-mile radius (approx) of Charlotte -
