The Athletic not very impressed with Sam Darnold
panthers55 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
This offense and Darnolds adjustments are designed to create mismatches for specific guys on specific plays. So Darnold tracking a receiver he knows is in a favorable matchup is smart and what QBs do. If that isn't available then he goes down the progressions if he has time or dumps it off. Given he is getting the ball out in about 2.5 seconds how many progressions should he cover especially when he knows who is going to be open most times?? -
So only thin people watch their steps or go to a gym. Everyone has to start somewhere. For all we know she could have lost 50.lbs and still be large. I hate Saints and their fans but this thread is embarrassing. This is junior high humor and not funny.

Not necessarily. If you are trying to get better you might play your scheme and even though you get burned alot the guys learn in your scheme and improve. Other than Horn we have many of the same guys in the secondary the first 2 games. It wasn't like the zone we used was effective either especially with the lack of any pressure. We have surely played better with average to below average safeties and corners in the past. But enough of the past. I am excited for the present.

I think the defense and particular the secondary was very different between Green Bay and the Saints. One was a prevent shell while last week was a primarily man cover often cover 0 pressuring receivers off the line preventing the quick hitters. I hope we keep the man and retire the prevent defense of last year. Especially since we now have the guys to run a man scheme.

Go ahead, admit it. Huddle confessionals.

I didn't think Donte would be playing this well. I am happy to say that Snow is running the exact defense I hoped he would after hearing on his arrival how aggressive he liked to be. -
Talk to me about the Texans. What do you know?

It will come down to stopping the run and managing screen plays which Houston will use to slow down the rush. A great run game is a rookies best friend. Coupled with a short passing game to get the ball out quick and it will come down to tackling and solid technique. Teams will figure out that you have to beat us by nickel and diming us down the field trying to negate our pass rush. -
Really good article on Sam Darnold. Worth a click.

So who have we had that didn't have one or two boneheaded plays per game? Cam had plenty and so did Jake. And plenty of guys in between. What I look for is whether you learn from those plays or keep doing them over and over. Whether you come back and try to atone for your mistake the next time out or fold like a fat man in a lawn chair. I like Darnold is humble and always looking to get better. Will he look bad at times? Let see how he looks against New England who made him see ghosts. Or Tampa twice. We will take some lumps. But until then I am loving 2-0 and rooting for 3-0 Thursday night. -

Do you think Rhule really liked his offense or ran the best one he could given the talent he had. He could have gotten any college OC he worked with to be our OC but he took Brady who turned a little known guy who would have gotten drafted later in the draft if at all into the number 1 pick in Burrow. Brady does a super job of finding out what a qb is most comfortable doing and then building the offense around that. Plus the New Orleans model has been highly effective. As much as I hate their team I respect their offense and was excited to know we would be running a version of it. -
I remember watching salt and pepper in 1996 aling with the rest of that amazing defense. It was amazing to watch Greene rush the passer. He might be handled most of the game but when you had to have a sack you could count on him delivering a herculean effort. He was money when the game was on the line.

If you are a Jets fan who migrated with Darnold, welcome aboard. You are going to like this ride. Darnold always had the ability but now he has a good team around him and coaches who can teach the concepts. That is one of the advantages of having coaches that coached a lot in college. They know how to break it down and help players assimilate it quickly as they don't often have lots of years with a starter unless they are good enough to start as a freshman or sophomore. -
One advantage watching the game live is you can see the whole field and how well we are covering guys. Pressure helps the secondary immensely just like no easy throws make it easy for pressure to get there. It has been great so far. Next up, the Texans.

You can say the same thing about any QB. -

That was exactly what I was saying about why Darnold will be more successful in this scheme. This scheme is QB friendly and let's him audible at the line which he couldn't do with the Jets. And obviously having more talent helps -

You see what you want to see not what is actually happening. Way to be consistent. Consistently wrong... -
I am enjoying the season and this team. I think we can make some noise if we keep.playing hard and stay focused on the prize. I am interested to see what happens when we face adversity. Is it next man up or do we fade away or come up short? I think we will fight hard and play for a whole 60 minutes. We could be a tough out this year. With some momentum and confidence who knows we might surprise some folks this year.

An odd front is about how they are attacking the offensive line through the gaps which are numbered with odd numbers or square up to the player which are numbered evenly. So odd fronts are usually one gap penetrating schemes. It has nothing to do with whether they use a 3 or 4 point stance or how many people are rushing. https://www.dawgsbynature.com/2014/3/2/5462738/mike-pettines-2013-base-defense-more-base-fronts

I am solidly on the Darnold train. He is our guy and we will ride as far as he takes us. Is he the future? Right now he is doing great. Why look too far ahead? Like the team I am just taking it as we go. I have been a Panther long enough to know that you can't predict the future easily. Sometimes we expect to be good and suck. Other times like in 2015 we expect to suck and we don't. Look ahead and worry all you want. I am going to ride this as far as it goes and enjoy the ups and downs. Hopefully more ups than downs. -
It is amazing how good players look when the scheme is solid and guys get freed up for 1 on 1 action. Instead of double teaming 3 rushers like lastvyear they now have to.protect one on one and can't easily predict who they have to block.

Many of the heavy blitzing teams are in the AFC not NFC. So it is true that the Saints wouldn't have seen that much. There was a reason that we played preseason games against both the Ravens and Pittsburgh. But if you watch those teams you would see we are doing the same thing. Jim Johnson used to do it all the time using a 4-3 with Philadelphia. It isn't that unique but it is effective. It takes fast players who can get off the line and into coverage quickly backpedaling while watching their man. It seems to work better using man coverage because you are at the line with the offensive player and can focus on the player and move with him instead of defending a zone but we did it both ways.

"Worst undefeated team" Its coming, we've been there.

It's about time. I remember a few years ago when the Saints got lots of early breaks with opposing players out or injured. Meanwhile we build momentum and confidence for the big tests ahead. If they don't have depth to replace missing or injured players that is too bad. I don't remember anyone feeling sorry for us when we had multiple injuries at one spot or another. -

That might be tough with their O line but I would love to see it. I don't like Dallas at all. -
These are not odd fronts, this is what teams like Baltimore and Pittsburgh have done for years. They put different guys on the line showing blitz and then rush from different angles or overload one side after faking the blitz from the other. This isn't unique but copying other successful blitzing teams. He is getting the most out of his guys and he is picking good times to get pressure but this defense isn't that different from many teams. It is just different from we have run before and very different from last year's prevent defense.

Why do we need to keep things in perspective? Maybe the players do but I can have unbridled enthusiasm and total excitement about kicking the saints butt and it isn't going to stop or change anything. In fact if we win on Thursday I might even get cocky.
