Michael Irvin on Cam

Captain Morgan

Recommended Posts

I don't agree that they should pay Cam half our salary cap. I also didn't believe we should tag Hardy and we see how that is playing out. My point was its not like Cam is playing with an Elite WR group or even a half decent oline group, so you really can't sell him on that. The only thing you can do is hope that he trusts you to build talent around him. They've done a C- job of that so far in his career. It's becoming even more obvious how void of talent we are now that Cam isn't running around being Superman.

Do you have any idea how the salary cap works?

As for Cam, I have been talking about how the NFL may start to turn into a blue collar QB league at some point, but it's just not there yet.

Most of the past SB winners have had QB's that are on rookie deals, very few have won it after paying their QB's crazy money.  I'm not advocating not paying Cam, but it will be harder to keep a great team around, after that happens.

What you have to hope for, is for Cam to continue to progress as a player after you give him big money, and for you to continue to hit it big in the FA bargain bin, and be very effective in the draft.

You sign Cam to the deal he gets, and Luke to his, and it will get really tough to sign KB and Star when they are up...and so on.

The structure of Kaepernick's contract tells me teams have noticed this fact.

That's a big reason why I think you'll see a lot of future contracts look similar.

I'm a fan of QB/Team friendly deals.

If you are playing well you get paid well, but not as much dead money on the books if you struggle.

I also think the Dalton deal was a pretty good trade off.
