I am pretty sure we did option 2 in this article

http://charlotte.cbslocal.com/2014/02/27/panthers-could-save-up-to-4-million-by-cutting-smith/

Steve Smith's cap hit if he stayed under his current contract

2014 - 7 million

2015 - 10 million

2016 - 12 million

Steve Smith's cap hit after being cut

2014 - 5 million

2015 - 4 million

2016 - 0 million

Savings each year

2014 - 2 million

2015 - 6 million

2016 - 12 million

We did save money in the long term, but it isn't like we saved millions and millions of dollars. Like I said, we took a cap hit. Which means we're still paying him even though he's not on the team.

The biggest savings wouldn't have come until 2017, where we would've owed him his full amount even if he retired.

20 million over 3 years is in fact "millions of millions of dollars".

Again, take out the last year which is the big year, and it's only, what, 7? Read the article by over the cap, it goes way more in-depth about this than two dudes posting on a forum.

how soon we forget what this team was like under the gum-hobbled boots of marty hurney

Oh, I remember. Mediocrity at its finest (discounting the 2-14 year, because I was drunk for half of it anyways).

But, again, I don't think it has to be Gettleman or Hurney. Like I said in another thread, there's so many more options out there than just those two.

I mean, don't get me wrong, that's all we've had in recent memory. At this point, Polian is just an echo of something that once was (and a scary looking dude on tv that may, or may not, be senile). I just think we can do better, that's it.

what if we make the playoffs this year and then draft a tackle next year and grab a few free agents?

IMO gettleman is as fallible as anyone, but what he's done with the team so far entitles him to a little bit of time. righting a ship takes time

We're not talking thousands here, a cap is like a budget we all live on. If Smitty was a team player he would still be here, yet he's still running his mouth...

Gettleman just didn't have the ability to fix our O-line long-term given the current cap scenario. I'm pretty confident it will be addressed this coming year. Gett's is doing it the right way instead of putting in more patchwork which will hurt us next year when we really go to fix the O-line.

You've got to see the irony that Gett's already is rebuilding the team, and is doing it the correct way, while OP is calling for the team to be blown up and rebuilt. Gett's is already 2 steps ahead of you playa.

I'm sick of the cap excuses. You franchised a DE, then turned around and drafted one in the second. Sorry. Shouldn't have franchised, and the money could have gone elsewhere. They were aware of the situation with Hardy and was hoping much like Goddell that things would be swept under the rug. Unless we make the playoffs, he needs to go. And at this point, our franchise QB might not make it through the season, and when that happens he might be replacing Brady.
