Where to Start in the Comic World

I guess I'll attribute the rise of comic movies and tv shows with renewing my interest in the comic world. I remember as a kid watching the Batman animated series, X-Men on Saturday morning, and others, so I'm looking to reconnect with some of these things and broaden my horizons a little. I know there are more than a few comic guys on the board, and I'd love to input on which comics/shows/movies to get into. Primarily, I'd like to stay within the realm of Batman/Justice League and the Avengers since I'm a newb.

Last night for instance, I watched the animated Dark Knight Returns movie, and have been thinking about buying the Civil War comics with the recent Avengers rumors. I've always felt I have a basic understanding of most characters, but feel like I'm missing out on a lot of the great details that DC and Marvel have given.

The only graphic novel I've ever read was the Watchmen, so any input would be much appreciated.

Some of my favs:

God Loves, Man Kills X-Men graphic novel. (basis for the second Xmen film)

Wolverine Mini-Series #1 (part basis for the last Wolverine film). He actually fights the ninjas in the comic.

Xmen - Anything with Claremont was solid.

Alpha Flight (early stuff) && I think the Xmen & Alpha Flight mini-series (it was only 2-3 issues IIRC) w/ Loki would make a pretty solid superhero drama film.

Guardian dying in #12 was shocking. Bringing him back...uhhhh.

Frank Miller's stuff.

TMNT - I remember seeing issue #1 in a comic convention in Eastland Mall. I was a broke kid but my friend bought it (edit: before it was popular)

I'm sure the Huddle can provide at least another 1000 (minimum) titles/story arcs to read.

Can't go wrong with the Batman Trilogy (the Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Haunted Knight) from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. I've always liked Batman more as a detective and these are very good detective stories. My favorite comics have been the X-men ever since I got up early for the Saturday morning cartoon. Great place to start with them is Joss Wheadons Astonishing X-men run or the Messiah trilogy (Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and Second coming). If you want your X-men a little darker try X-force under Christopher Host and Craig Kyle and Rick Remenders excellent run on Uncanny X-force.

I havent bought much DC since new 52 came out. As for Marvel, you'd really be jumping into a long developed storyline if you hop in right now. It's decent, but you may be a bit confused for a little bit.

I'd recommend watching watching Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes on Netflix (not Assemble)

That was a good show that adapted a lot of popular comic stories from throughout Marvel's history that would give you a good foundation for jumping into the comics. It's a good show too so it's no chore.

Actually just finished Earth's Mightiest Heroes a few weeks back and really liked it. It's part of the reason I started looking back into the animated series and movies.

    • You joke, but it can always be worse. He might walk with a limp or need assistance. Different sport, but Lonzo Ball couldn't even walk up steps a year after his injury.
    • I mean... a lot of the information that could've helped set better expectations has always been out there: There was no RB on the team under contract for the 2025 - 2026 season except for Miles Sanders. The team did not have a second round pick going into the 2025 season due to the trade for Young. Chuba's extension did not happen until the beginning of November. Jonathon Brooks was the clear RB1 in the class with a massive gap between RB1 & RB2. Example: Dane Brugler had Brooks as RB1, overall #48; Blake Corum was RB2, #81 overall. The Giants held pick #47 and had just lost Saquon Barkley to the Eagles in free agency. They were going to take Brooks had the Panthers not jumped in front of them. So if we're framing things with that context: Chuba was expected to be RB1 Miles (at the time) was RB2 Brooks was essentially RB3, stashed for rehab in 2024 with a long runway. The original injury occurred Nov 2023 while the re-injury occurred December 2024. That is right in the high-risk window for recurrence, especially in explosive athletes. The fact that it also happened on a non-contact play suggests possible biomechanical issues such as muscle imbalance, rather than a failed surgery (or bad decision-making).   NFL teams invest heavily in medically vetting prospects. If there had been a clear red flag in imaging or recovery markers, the team is going to find it. This sucks and the Panthers have sucked, yes, but this wasn't blind optimism or malpractice by the front office. It was a calculated decision based on the roster, draft capital, positional scarcity, etc.
    • Yep, but they can all rotate with Brown, Brown and Robinson (sounds like a law firm). Can't continue to have Derrick Brown out there for 90+ percent of the defensive snaps. An injury was bound to happen.
