On Monday, Rob Manfred, the new commissioner of Major League Baseball, got a chance to extricate his sport from a deepening moral quandary. Pete Rose, the disgraced onetime star of the Cincinnati Reds, petitioned Mr. Manfred’s office to be reinstated in the sport from which he was barred in 1989 for gambling.

Mr. Rose, 73, was the most dynamic player of the last half-century and, after that, a first-rate manager. He played more games (3,562) and got more hits (4,256) than anyone else ever.

Standing 5’11”, he owed his success to force of character, not athletic gifts. He was loyal (he is a Cincinnati native, and the Reds’ mascot is tattooed on his biceps), tough (never on the disabled list until he was well into his 40s), versatile (17 All-Star games at five different positions) and, above all, determined. Everyone called him “Charlie Hustle.” He was the only player of his era to slide headfirst and to sprint to first base on walks. Baseball’s moral pariah is, in certain respects, a moral paragon.

Charlie Hustle needs to be in the Hall.

Make MLB whole again Mr. Commissioner.

Just the fact that Manfred is actually going to consider this is great progress, but it's a shame that MLB waited way too long to replace Selig which leaves him with an uphill climb to bring baseball back to say the least. Kudos to him for addressing the issues immediately, unlike Bud who simply wanted to pretend issues didn't exist.

Pete Rose remains banned from baseball, but he has been given the equivalent of a weekend furlough from the penitentiary: Commissioner Rob Manfred said today that Rose will be allowed to participate in activities surrounding this summer’s All-Star Game in Cincinnati.

Rose, a Reds legend, native and resident of Cincinnati, remains immensely popular in Cincinnati and his inclusion in activities around the All-Star Game seemed inevitable. Indeed, many suspect that Rose will soon be reinstated by Commissioner Manfred, who recently agreed to consider Rose’s appeals anew. Rose was also recently hired for a commentator’s position at Fox Sports, which is a rights holder for Major League Baseball broadcasts. The league reportedly was consulted on the Fox hire, though Manfred has denied that Major League Baseball had any “input” in the decision.

    • Im not firm on many things football, but this statement or belief or strategy I am 100% for. Full Offseason the goal is to make the playoffs. Week 1, 1000% I want to win. Weeks 2-10,  1000% I want to win. Until the math stats 0.000000000% chance at NO playoffs, I want to win. *Once* there's no chance at the playoffs, I want to 100% lose every game until the end. You are still loser at 2-15 or 5-12, I want to never lose like this again. I want the best value for losing and suffering. Again the only goal is playoffs. Once in the playoffs anything can happen, I want to win the whole dam show. If you happen to lose in the first round, that's perfectly fine and lets work hard this upcoming off-season to get another chance to make them.  This is the ONLY way to play in the NFL. Anyone not understanding this method of strategy, please call your doctor for a visit...
    • Purdy's good but at the end of the day you're paying first class money for a business class seat.  It's a big problem with the salary cap.  QBs take most of it whether they are Pat Mahomes or not.
    • Purdy saved the 49ers from that three 1st picks for Trey Lance. People forget that. People also forget he should have MVP votes for the 23 season. He's been any where from the 8th(his best/23) to 14th ranked QB, he's legit and guys around top 10 get paid as QBs.....guys in 28th get paid too, he's 4x the QB Trevor Lawrence is and better than BY by miles as well...even without CMC, Samuel(whos a RB playing WE), and half the OL.    *BUT*    You non-believers missed this ultra important mistake that honestly made me reconsider all the praise I gave him. https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/49ers-qb-brock-purdy-throws-blind-40-percent   That's is damming to my case and reset my thinking of his. That's nuclear scary now and I need some time.  too honest for me to overlook.
