OTL Report: Goodell's Handling of Deflategate was a "Make-up Call," After Letting Pats Slide On Spygate (Panthers Related)

I like how the article on Witherspoon's claims on PFT still take the "of course, his suspicions are unfounded and can't be proven without hard evidence," route...    LOL...   Yeah, that's why it's a big deal and Goodell's actions virtually assure the public that they did indeed illegally gather Intel on meaningful games, otherwise, he wouldn't have destroyed the tapes and made it to where there was no evidence.

That's why people are outraged and why fans of teams that lost to them will never let it go.  The best thing he could've done was been upfront and reveal the extent of their cheating no matter what the price.  It would've allowed the public time to accept the truth and they could've moved forward and recovered, because ultimately, it would've shown that the league wouldn't tolerate cheating.  I view it a lot like the Black Sox scandal...  Obviously, times are different now, but if we would've addressed it like MLB did them, the league would've been fine.   Instead, the almost every fan outside of the Patriots bubble feels four years of competition were basically wasted and don't legitimately count.

I think Goodell feared that revealing they won Superbowls, in part, because of what they gained by cheating would've brought the entire league down, and I couldn't disagree more.   I feel they may have swept enough under the rug to keep the gravy train going, and in the process he was successful in making the game more profitable than ever, but he also made people question the legitimacy of championships and the integrity of the game more than ever...   And that's not good business for the present or going forward.

Fixed? Nah.

If it were fixed, I seriously doubt that flag against Kuechly in the end zone the last time we played the Patriots would have been picked up.

Did the Patriots cheat though?  Yes.

Did they get away with it? Yes.

Did Goodell sweep it under the rug?  Yes.

I wonder if public figures are ever going to understand that covering something up just makes the backlash that much worse once people find out.

Had Goodell just dealt with it at the time the way he should have, we probably wouldn't even be talking about this today.

Ive read way more of this topic then i should've, especially bc I'm just getting more and more pissed. THEY HAD GUYS PRETEND TO BE CAMERAMEN AND STEAL PLAYBOOKS and some of you are saying we lost bc of kasay? we lost bc they fuging cheated. As soon as Godell found out he should've DQed them instantly and given us the win. Think about how amazing that team was that we played against people who knew our plays inside and out and we still almost won. And literally fug the pats, bellicheat, brady, and especially Goodell for letting them get away with it. All should be banned from the nfl

    • I'd hold on to Walker - we have no OT depth at all. Freeling is a block of clay - all the tools are there and he appears to have a great attitude. He needs serious work on his technique to realise his potential though.
    • From my watch last night: They weren't trading out of 19 unless it was a daft offer once Freeling got there. They were clearly antsy to get Hunter - and Minnesota actually called to offer the trade down. They weren't trading out of the third round pick once Brazzell fell to it (and Canales would have been happy with him in the second round). They traded back a lot on Day 3 - even if Morgan 'Babe Ruth'd' it with Lee, Hecht and Wheatley; they clearly weren't the only guys they would have taken at those picks. I'm curious to know which player caused the reaction at the start of day 2 (Dan Morgan): "of course they'd pick him"
    • Watching this confirms that this staff and front office is super high on Monroe Freeling. I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotta a real chance to win the starting LT job in camp. If he does, we can look to flip Rasheed Walker to a contender desperate for tackle help.   As for Ickey I still really like him and wanna extend him but based on how the staff was talking about Freeling it might be time for ickey to start taking some practice sets at guard if he wants to stay here as we are gonna have to have figure out a solution for the contracts of Lewis and Hunt.  My preferred scenario for the Oline in 2027 is Freeling-Ickey-Hech-Lewis-Moton.
