Game stats - side by side: ideas & feedback wanted

For those who might have missed the series of statistical blog entries which I posted yesterday at my Huddle blog Panthers Analysis, one of the entries is an overview of all the Panthers' preseason game data in a side by side table - allowing a quick comparison of how performance changed over the course of each of the 4 games.

This data comes from reviewing each of the Panthers' "gamebooks" downloaded from Panthers.com and copying data into a spreadsheet I created.  I'm wondering are there any sites online which allow one to similarly look at data for a team for multiple games side by side?  If so, can someone point me to those sites?

If this kind of side by side game data does not exist online, would it be of interest to Huddlers if I were to track and post this kind of side by side game data throughout the regular season?   I'd welcome your ideas and feedback.

Perhaps take a quick glance at the preseason data I've posted and imagine it is regular season data for the 1st four weeks.  What data should be highlighted?  What's clear, what's unclear?   The order of the data mostly comes from the order the data is presented in the gamebook.  Would it be helpful if I were to better separate out offense / defense and special teams?  There's some separation, but in some cases defensive stats are mixed in with stats for the offense.

What 8 or 10 team stats would you like to see in a "performance at a glance" or "Key game stats" feature?

  • Yards gained  / Yards allowed?
  • 3rd down conversions?
  • Red Zone Efficiency?
  • Time of possession?
  • Turnover ratio?
  • Sacks?
  • Rushing yards per play?

Would adding some kind of team leaderboard of key players for each week be of interest?

Thanks in advance for your ideas and input.  If I'm going to take the time to do this, I'd like it to be something that others can use and find helpful as well.

Statistical analysis of NFL games is good but context is always at the forefront. The opposition is always different so stats don't have the same meaning week to week.

having said that, our stats against opponent X vs stats from opponent Y could show a weakness to exploit or a strength to protect against. If nothing else, it helps in my FF and Fan Duel domination.

What you have is already substantial. I'd love to keep following this. One suggestion: because you have provided so much information, it may be a good idea to put some lines in there for aesthetic purposes. Keeps things looking nice and neat while I'm scrolling up and down the page.

Awesome work though.

Thanks.  My original table has lines, but they disappear when imported into the blog software (as does all formatting - bold, colors, shading etc.)  I can preserve the formatting by first copying the table into Word and then pasting into the blog software, but doing that with a table larger than about 12 lines makes the blog go wonky very quickly and half the table and the end of the blog entry disappears.

I think in the regular season, what I will do is post the table in the blog as is, with minimal formatting, but then also link to a formatted spreadsheet, updated each week, which people can upload which will be much easier to read, and would be sortable, etc.

Here is the spreadsheet I've created in case anyone wants to upload it to play around with it.

 Panthers 2015 Gamebook Data.xlsx

I'll create a new page for the regular season and will update this weekly.

P.S.  It works well if you "freeze the panes" in Excel at cell C4, making it easier to scroll up and down and side to side in the table without losing sight of the headers or the column listing all the statistics.

I don't know how well this Excel file will work for those with Apples, etc.  For work I still need to have a laptop with Windows / Microsoft Office, so that's what is easiest for me to work with in terms of creating spreadsheets.  One of these days I'll be able to make the jump to Apple.

Re: lines disappearing...if you want them, you can paste into PowerPoint (with gridlines still visible) and then save as (I think enhanced metagraphic) and the lines will remain visible. May be a more efficient way to do it but this should work.
