It's actually saying you're about to be on the wrong side of 30 and we can tag you for less than you want. Twice.

So you want a disgruntled player that is pivotal to your defense? I don't. We've seen what a disinterested Norman looks like in Atlanta, that's what tagging him would look like imo.

he won't actually be 30 until he's done both of those tags. You can sign him longer for cheaper over the life of the deal and reward your star corner or you can tag him save a couple million and have him hate you for it. You're robbing him of the chance to make his fortune.

Well not really, giving a man 12/14 million upfront pretty much says the opposite.

What it does say though is, we are unsure if you can keep that up for 5/6 years at 14 million a year with 30 million guaranteed. At age 28. Norman wants to be paid like one of the best, that is clear, so that is 6 years 84 mil.... Again, age 28... Go Hurney!!

Signing him to a one year fully guaranteed contract is basically telling him go hit the lottery again. After playing like the number one corner and winning the super bowl where his value will never be higher, you are robbing him of the ability to financially capitalize. Which is why we are tagging him. He's either going to get a 4 year deal at 14 million a year or we are letting him walk. Tagging him after all that is complete disrespect.

I agree with the concept of signing him long-term for the reasons I mentioned earlier in the thread.

I think where we differ is the notion that giving Norman a 900% raise to reward him on his great season would infuriate Norman. He will want a long term contract and all the guaranteed money, but if he wants that, he is going to have to scale back the total money he teceives or at least agrees to an incentive laden deal. That way both sides are protected and he gets his guaranteed money. You could give him 14 million as a signing bonus (franchise tag) and then guaranteed his first 2 years salary and give him an option bonus of another 8 million for another 2 years for a 4 year contract. Let's assume his first year salary is 5 million which goes up to 9 in year 2. He gets the option bonus if we sign him again to another 2 year deal  with salaries of 10 million. So he gets a 4 year contract of potentially  56 million with essentially 2 - 2 year contracts  if he continues to play at a high level. With 28 million guaranteed and 8 more on the option. We are only guaranteeing less than he would get if we tried to franchise him twice since that takes a hike of 130% on year 2.

I have no problem with whatever Gettleman decides to do because I feel like he's earned that trust from what he's done thus far and how he's been working at the cap but in this thread and throughout the entire season people have gone on the belief he WILL 100% be getting tagged and I just don't see that as a viable option for either parties. Would Josh rather get a 900% for one year only or captalize on his value and secure a pay check that will last him for life? This is the same guy who was sleeping on another dudes couch just to play football. After everything he has accomplished anything short of a long term deal will be seen as disrespect.

I don't think the Panthers value the CB spot enough to pay Norman what he will want to get paid and/or deserves to get paid.  The D-line, and LB core are more of a priority in this defense.  I think the Panthers LB core is strong, however, the D-line is not as dominant as it once was and it is aging.  I think they are going to have to bring in some big talent to shore up the D-line next year as I believe Allen, CJ, Alexander and Edwards are done, and DeLaire and Addison are only 'situational' pass rushers.

They may decide to Tag Norman, but I do think it is possible they trade him and pick up draft picks if they see D-line talent in the draft.  I don't think that is a knock on Norman...I just think the Panthers have a strategy of how to build a team, and not sure that a high priced CB fits into their philosophy.
