Joe Person answers some questions regarding Panthers' thinking on free agency.

I put very little to zero merit into anything Person or Jones says regarding the Panthers - ESPECIALLY Person. I'm convinced a lot of his input is speculation..or his own personal spin on hearsay that some nobody/lower level front office guy feeds him.

Gettleman and Rivera are polar opposites of Hurney and Fox and most of us on here can infer reasonable expectations from whenever DG holds a press conference and don't need the bullshit that the Observer Panthers coverage team spits out.

We have to get a DE or maybe 2 in the FA market. We just have to. I don't see any other way around it.

Im hoping we still have Big Frank and Addison, because they're no slouches (well, I really don't know what to say about Frank,) but at least that would give us some options if all else fails.

Hopefully we can get Josh to come to terms before the franchise tag deadline is up, which should free up some money that's kind of ham-stringing is right now.

We have Ealy, then Addison. After those 2 you've got Delaire, Cox, Miley, Horton, and some guy named Webster. That's our DE rotation. I know they love Delaire and Cox. And along with Miley, they want to get these kids some playing time. The only way to evaluate and develop players is by letting them play.

Now do you stick by your guns and just go with the kids? You hope some of them "Get It' this year. Or do you bring in a Quality Vet to help mentor and lead what is a really young group? With the natural growth you'd expect out of players. Our DEs just maybe could get by with 1 vet and the kids.

Win, lose, or draw, I'd make my 1st, if only, high price get, be a DE. We absolutely must find a book-end for Ealy. Thus, allowing you to still give the kids plenty of meaningful plays.

I would say we DEFINITELY need a FA veteran DE to be our starter opposite Ealy.  Addison is not an every down guy.  Horton is ok against the run, not a pass rusher.  I can't assume that any of our depth guys (Delaire, Cox, Miley) are ready to start yet.

BUT, with Ealy and a new FA as starters, and then Addison, Horton and Cox, Delaire, Miley, we *could* possibly be set for our rotation, but I'd almost certainly bet on DG picking a DE in the draft as a player to develop for the future.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
