Panthers free agent possibilities/predictions

Luke Kuechly did not take the defense over until mid season 2012 - it started off as John Beason and Kuechly was out of position at OLB. Thomas Davis was injured in 2011 and took a good portion during the start of the season to get back up to speed in 2012. Josh Norman was not drafted until 2012 and spent time in Rivera's dog house in 2012 and 2013 when he should have been starting the entire time. The Panthers had a major problem at LB in 2011 with the injuries to Beason and Davis in the first 2 games of the season. James Anderson, Dan Connor, and Jordan Senn were not going to get it done on defense. If the Panthers have those LBs instead of Kuechly and Davis in any of the past 3 seasons, the Panthers would be lucky to see the playoffs in 1 season never mind 3.

The Panthers defense gave up a ton of points in 2011. In 2012, they struggled to start the season and when everything was up to speed with the key players they finished the season off with a 6-3 record (5-1 in the final 6 games while keeping teams below 30 points unlike 11 of the previous games from 2011 to mid 2012).

Also, you had a rookie head coach who admittedly was learning on the job.

That was the reason. If the Panthers get the key pieces on defense healed up and in to place a couple weeks sooner, there would be no Dave Gettleman as GM.

The offense was good even with Cam learning at the QB position each week.

Keep in mind the Saints and Falcons were at the top of their game those years compared to their decline and rebuild over the past 3 seasons.

Here's a quick pop quiz for ya:

From 2006 through 2012, the Panthers had exactly one winning season.  That's a seven year stretch with only a single playoff appearance (which was lost in spectacular fashion) and an overall win percentage of .424 to show for it.

Praytell, who was the architect that put together all those mediocre teams?

Might as well take a random guess at this point:

So we've got this C/G Signed & then if we grab Soliai...

Quintin Demps (S) - Not splashy, hasn't been mentioned much, and has effectively played for both Johnson and McD's defenses.

Casey Hayward (CB) - Good zone corner with a lot of years left to give.

Not bad. Forgot about Demps, a good special team guy as well.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
