I know alot of Qb's call a timeout if they dont like what their seeing from the defense but it seems jake does it more than others. Is this because the coaching staff micromanages him too much or am i just off base here? I dont expect him to be able to read a D like peyton and make adjustments but man timeouts are too valuable to being throwing away. Especially when our coaching staff has a hard time managing them as it is! And just to add one more thought to this it seems we hit our best rythym on offense when we go no huddle. How many plays do u think we have for a no huddle offense and jake obviously has free reign to call the plays he wants in a hurry up offense right?

Jake keeps calling the timeouts because of poor clock management. Whether its getting the plays in, called or what who knows but he is calling the timeouts cause there is only 1 second left on the play clock and he is not ready to hike the ball - so instead of the 5yrd delay of game he calls the timeout.

With our system I think it is great that Jake can call a timeout if the play doesn't look good against their defensive lineup. I read somewhere that Jake only audibles to the run when things don't look good for certain passing plays. This is even more evident when you watch the game and see him yell out "ALERT ALERT!" and the play follows with a handoff. I've seen the occasional smoke route to the outside, which Jake might have the option to check to, unless it was the original play called in the huddle. Giving Jake more freedom at the line might just save us one of those timeouts in the long run, but with our clock management skills, timeouts really don't seem to matter.

    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
