Primer for busy NFL weekend transaction

This is a good starting point for the transactions that will take place this weekend. If you are like me I am not in tune to the minutiae of the different types of transactions on NFL rosters.

This will be the busiest weekend without actual games played on the NFL calendar, with all 32 teams required to pare their rosters to 53 players for the regular season before signing a 10-man practice squad.

There are many different types of transactions that can be made, some of them easier to understand than others.

Here's a list of the most common moves that will be announced around the league after the deadline on Saturday afternoon:

I think there could be one error in this article:

Quote

RESERVE/INJURED: When a team places an injured player on a reserve list that's exempt from the 53-man limit. He's ineligible to return in the same season.

RESERVE/INJURED WITH DESIGNATION TO RETURN: Each team has one such card to play each season, when a player on injured reserve can return to practice after at least six weeks on the list and play after at least eight weeks on the list.

I believe starting this season, teams no longer have to specifically designate which player is the "injured with designation to return".  I think the rules have been changed to allow teams to make that decision later, once a player has been on the IR for six weeks.  Still only 1 player can be brought back onto the roster, but teams get a chance to wait and see who they most want / need to bring back to the roster once some time has elapsed.

So, if I understand correctly, of the players placed on the IR this weekend, each team WILL be able to bring back one of those players (or another player) after they've been on the IR a minimum of 6 weeks.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
