A little background on Kubiak

The Texans are focused on trying to defeat the Browns and become 6-3 for the first time in their 10-year history, and nothing is going to distract them from their goal - especially more accusations that they play dirty.

"It doesn't bother me," coach Gary Kubiak said Monday. "We're going to put 46 guys out there and play as hard as we can play. Other than that, I've got no comment on it."

While fans and media on Monday debated the significance of cheap-shot allegations by the past two opponents, Kubiak prepared for Cleveland.

Being accused of playing dirty is nothing new to Kubiak. When he was the quarterbacks coach at San Francisco, Mike Shanahan was the offensive coordinator and George Seifertthe head coach. The 49ers' offensive linemen were often accused of leg-whipping when they were blocking.

Their style of play didn't keep the 49ers from winning a Super Bowl.

When Kubiak was offensive coordinator at Denver under Shanahan, their offensive linemen were accused by many opponents for dirty tactics that stemmed from cut blocks.

Their style of play didn't keep the Broncos from winning two Super Bowls.

During Kubiak's first five seasons with the Texans, no opponent complained publicly about the offensive linemen performing cut blocks. That changed two weeks ago.

Titans, Jags weigh in

Before the 41-7 victory at Tennessee, Titans defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks claimed that offensive tackle Eric Winston and guardWade Smith had injured him deliberately with cut blocks, which he admitted were legal.

Last week, Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton ripped the Texans, saying he hated them and Houston. He also called them arrogant without giving examples.

After the Texans beat the Jaguars 24-14 on Sunday, Knighton called them dirty, among other things.

Defensive end Jeremy Mincey claimed the Texans used cheap shots against him, including stepping on his head.

Unlike Marks, Knighton and Mincey refused to name names.

During Sunday's game, Jaguars quarterbackBlaine Gabbert could be heard cursing at Texans linebacker Brian Cushing for what he perceived as an illegal hit. Cushing wasn't penalized.

Not going to change

Most of the complaints about cut blocking come from defensive linemen who are usually the victims. It's a key part of blocking for the run. The Texans rank fourth in the NFL in rushing, averaging 141.9 yards a game.

There's no way the Texans will change the way they play, including that key component of their running game opponents loathe.

"It's just part of what we do," Kubiak said...

Kubiak not bothered by complaints that Texans play dirty

I'd say the fact that he's "not bothered" is telling.

The Broncos under Shanahan and Kubiak long had a reputation for being dirty, with a lot of it being due to Alex Gibbs (whom I consider a disgrace to his family's good name).

For the record, Gibbs is currently employed in Denver as an OL consultant.

That should tell you something.

Great find on all of this. I've been pleading on my Facebook Panthers got hosed and it cost them the game, no one believes me...

    • I'm more curious if he can recover from his injury and still be a starting caliber olineman
    • Does this mean only topics from within the last year or any topics with posts from the last year? i.e. if there are any old threads we feel should be kept around for whatever reasons, would a bump of that thread before the update ensure it's kept around in full or do the posts from more than a year old still disappear?
    • I'm more intrigued at him becoming our future LG. There were some people who thought he was better suited to be a guard in the NFL to begin with.  Then if Freeling ends up being a legit LT, moving Ickey to LG could give us an incredibly strong left side of our OL for years to come. Ickey has only played on the Left side his whole career, both in college and the NFL, so I just wonder if keeping him on the left side, even if shifting inside, would be better than putting him outside on the right side. Just hoping him growing up a Panthers fan will make him want to stay here and move positions than enter FA so he can stay at LT somewhere else, particularly since LT is the big money position on the OL, so he likely can get paid more by someone else to play LT than play LG or RT here for us.
