The Scot McCloughan situation

Redskins GM Scot McCloughan is not in attendance at this week's NFL Combine.

A team spokesman said McCloughan is "taking care of some family matters," but his absence will only add to speculation McCloughan is being pushed out in Washington. Team employee Chris Cooley recently started a rumor that McCloughan has been drinking, and multiple reports out of D.C. indicate McCloughan's power in the Redskins' front office has been reduced and/or stripped. For the past two years, the Redskins had seemingly become a functional organization again on McCloughan's watch. Since the 2016 season ended, the dysfunction has returned and then some.

Redskins GM Scot McCloughan told the Washington Post's Mike Jones he is not attending the NFL Combine due to a "death in the family."

No further details are available. An NFL general manager missing the Combine is extremely uncommon under any circumstance, but McCloughan's absence is now more understandable. The Redskins have still shed little light on McCloughan's current status with the team and role in the organization. In early February, the Washington Post reported team president Bruce Allen "put McCloughan on notice," and is "breathing down his neck" after the Redskins missed the playoffs due to a Week 17 loss to the Giants.

Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan in D.C. reports Redskins GM Scot McCloughan was "sent home" and "told not to return for now" on February 20.

McCloughan personally told the Washington Post he isn't at the Combine due to a "death in the family," and the Redskins announced McCloughan isn't in Indy because he's "taking care of some family matters." It's believed McCloughan's grandmother passed away. On Wednesday night, Russell cited "reliable sources" in reporting McCloughan hasn't been at Redskins Park for over a week. Hopefully, the team will shed more light on the situation in the next few days.

CSN Mid-Atlantic's J.P. Finlay reports Redskins GM Scot McCloughan's grandmother "passed away last month," and her death was "not a surprise for the family."

In other words, the death of McCloughan's grandmother was not sudden and a situation that would prevent him from doing his job. Perhaps someone else close to McCloughan passed away more recently, but any NFL GM's absence from the Combine is notable regardless of circumstance. And especially in McCloughan's case with so many rumors circulating about his health and role in Washington.

Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan in D.C. reports Redskins GM Scot McCloughan has lost all power in the organization.

Reporting live on air, Russell stated president Bruce Allen, coach Jay Gruden, and scouts Alex Santos and Scott Campbell, and personnel executive Doug Williams are now running the team. McCloughan "has nothing to do with anything and has not for a very long time," according to Russell. McCloughan allegedly has been setting up the funeral for his grandmother. Online records show that McCloughan's 100-year-old grandmother passed away on February 6. The funeral occurred on February 13, and the woman was buried the next day.

    • Any idea what happened to him at LSU? im reading that he was considered a 1st round pick in 2023, had an off 2024 season with only 4 sacks but was also on a horrible FSU team then went to LSU where he was supposed to be on an aggressive defense that should have given him a lot of sacks but he only ended up with one….   was he injured? Did the top SEC competition expose him? What happened? Cause this guy was considered a top prospect .
    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
