2018 Compensatory Picks

Recommended Posts

Here is the breakdown for our 2018 compensatory picks.  I find this stuff extremely interesting, if you don't, then don't read past this point.

For starters, Tolbert and Soliai will not count as they were released, not UFAs. Similarly, Corey Brown is a RFA who was not tendered, so whatever contract he receives will not count. For this same reason, WR Charles Johnson, who was a RFA not tendered, will not count in the equation.

Panthers signed to other teams who will count in our favor:
Ted Ginn Jr (3,650,000 APY) 6th round
A.J. Klein (5,000,000 APY) 6th round
Mike Remmers (6,000,000 APY) 5th round

Contracts currently counting against our compensation pick:
Matt Kalil (11,100,000) 3rd round
Captain Munnerlyn (5,250,000) 6th round
Julius Peppers (3,500,000) 6th round
Russell Shepard (TBD)
Mike Adams (TBD)

Potential players who could be signed and contribute to our chances (if signed for more than 900K APY):
Chris Scott
Michael Griffin
Kyle Love
Leonard Johnson
Ryan Wendell
Teddy Williams

If 3 or more of these players sign with other teams for more than 900K APY, we could look at picking up a 7th rounder, but those chances are slim. This would also assume we are done bringing in players.

Gettleman chose to go all-in with free agency this off-season and we will likely not be receiving any additional compensatory picks in 2018.  It could be argued that making sure we received our 3rd round compensation for Norman hindered our ability to maneuver FA last year.

I don't think DG was focused on compensation picks for next year after he got Jerry up in his ear yelling for him to do something while dropping Bojangles biscuit crumbs on his shorts that were sitting by his nipples!

Once we signed Kalil 2018 comp picks are off the table. We didn't have enough people who might leave. It's also a reason why there's no chance we weren't going to keep the tag on Short. I just hope we extend our guards soon.

I would agree with this except compensations picks are cancelled on a 1:1 basis regardless of round. So we bring in 5 players who qualify yet lose 6, we still get a pick even if the APY is drastically uneven.  It will just be a late rounder.

    • I mean, no I’m not going to panic when he got 2 Qs and looked great in 1 and looked not great in another (let’s not mention the drop).    Yeah we finally have a team that would be considered average offensively around him. Let’s roll this season.
    • The woe is me everything but Bryce sucks mantra is stale af my friend. Look nobody here is going to argue with the fact Frank Reich was not a good head coach. At the same time. Bryce Young is now in his second season with his second coaching staff and a handpicked young offensive head coach who has been known for working with QB's such as Baker and Geno. As far as the offensive pieces around Bryce we have the 4th highest salary cap allocation (that might be even higher now after the new Moton deal) dedicated to the OL in the entire league. We have 2 first round WR's one of them 8th overall the first time we've ever selected a WR that high in franchise history. And the fact of the matter is Bryce Young did not have a good preseason. It's not the first time it's happened either. We all hope to see he and the rest of the team flip a switch in week 1. But we should all be able to agree that the offensive performances we've seen from the entire QB room (Bryce included) in preseason was simply unacceptable.
    • We have seen Bryce play… what… 9 games with AT BEST what one would consider NFL average WRs? You just can’t see the forest for the trees and keep going back to your lazy take of revisionist history.    he looked AWFUL Y1 with the worst coaching I’ve ever seen in the NFL and one of the weakest WR rooms I can recall. He looked awful first half of y2 and great second half of y2 with average coaching and average skill position. I don’t know where this elite talent argument even comes from.
