Panthers Have No Interest in Shaun Smith

Just read through this thread. Everybody is acting like the Panthers are passing on the greatest player ever.

He's the best available DT on the market right now and has been for quite a while this off season. We have one of the worst groups of DTs in the NFL if not THE worst. It makes perfect sense for us to at least try to attempt to sign him. But then again, Fox and Hurney will always do the complete opposite of what makes sense.

How is Smith better than Hollis Thomas, aside from being younger? They were looking for a 1 technique tackle, and that's exactly what Thomas is, so what's the problem?

What are hollis numbers the last 3-4 years. If i'm not mistaken he was hurt when he played for the saints and Philly. What has he done the last 4 years? He was good in the past but we are talking right now 10/8/09 who is the better player now.

Why you have such a problem with Kris I don't know? You keep bringing him up. I'll tell you 1 thing When Kris didn't want too be here he still played and gave effort. Can you say the same for Pep?

Well, I only brought up Jenkins once, and that was because people were saying the same thing about him that they're saying about HT...that he's not as good as he once was.

Whatever, you're convinced that the Panthers refuse to get better just because they don't want your guy, but have you not wondered why nobody else wants Shaun Smith either, if he's so good?

You don't sign a NT because he puts up good numbers, you sign him to hold the point and keep blockers off the LBers so they can put up good numbers. Hell Kemo never had good numbers either.

He was released right before the season started, where most teams had already locked up the position and just wanted to keep the guys that had been through OTA, TC and preseason already with their teams. Even with that, six teams still contacted him so yeah, it's not like there's been zero interest.

Given that DT was already a weak spot on the team and we now have 3 DTs on IR it's pretty obvious he'd be an upgrade for us over the guys we have. Anyone arguing that we can't make the cap space or that he's not good enough is missing the point. The Panthers are passing him up for character concerns, they've already stated this.

Who the f**k here said he was great? Don't make up things. Smith is a big body that can take on blockers as well as apply some pressure. He would be an upgrade over Hayden who constantly gets pushed around.

he gets talked about as someone who'd radically improve. So, therefore at some point he may have done something on a football field that merits him being so highly regarded.

So, tell me what he did on the field. Back it up if you're going to get mad about it.

I though people could do a simple search and find out themeselves.

When smith started in '07 and '08 he produced very well. In '07, he had the highest number of tackles Kemo has ever had and last year they had the same. He did this while playing in a 3-4 where all he had to do was take up blockers yet put up good tackle numbers. He would be a significant upgrade over anyone else we currently have. Probably including Kemo.

I've seen his stats plenty. I was waiting for someone to bother making an actual case that wasn't "but he's Shaun Smith!" or excuses for him pissing off two coaching staffs and punching a quarterback because a Pro Bowler here did that, too.

he had a solid year in 07. Out of six years. Fair enough, he's shown he can do it, occasionally.

LOL Are you really trying to grade a players value based on some random comment from a disillusioned ex-fan?

Yeah, Panthers fans made similar comments when Jenkins left. Fans always talk bad about a player after their team kicks them to the curb, especially if that player was unhappy with the organization and took a swing at their pretty boy QB of the future.

Why would they?

What? Do you really think could contribute to what we've already got going here?????

hahahahaha

The ? is can he contribute more then Nick Hayden, Burton, and Hollis? If the anwser is yes to either 1 of these players then why not give him a shot. Or you are not doing your best to put the best players on the field.

    • I had a huge response typed up for this that I lost entirely so I'm starting from scratch which is annoying but sh*t happens. I think Purdy is a high end game manager. I've made my thoughts known. I think he is talented and is at his best in the areas of timing rhythm and accuracy. When playing within the structure and scheme of that Shanahan offense and the talent around him he can be really good. Where his limitations become pronounced and more evident is when he has to go toe to toe with dynamic elite QB's. Which obviously isn't a problem just limited to him. But he's been given almost 200 million dollars guaranteed so that's an issue. I think the 49ers will struggle to get back to the mountain top with his new contract looming large and certainly they will face a very steep climb to somehow winning another championship. As far as Bryce within the pocket there have been numerous discussions here and even video circulated of him bouncing around the pocket like a pogo surveying the field or having both feet off the ground to deliver a pass. It exists even if you or someone else doesn't want it to. And I get why. But it's up to Bryce and Canales to figure out how to not only get his footwork where it needs to be and keep it there but to build a scheme around Bryce and what he does best and fit his limitations into a formidable offense. Look brother we can get into the weeds about this but I will respectfully say I do not believe you are being consistent here. You have gone out of your way as one of the key voices complaining about how striking the lack of quality talent and coaching was around Bryce Young in 2023. You've also been a key voice who has gone out of your way to sprinkle sunshine and rainbows on just about any discussion around every Panthers player and anything Panthers in general. Which is fine and can be a good thing. It's not for everyone but still more power to you. But it's jarring to see that and then you here now in what I can only describe as downplaying the talent around Bryce when it comes time to shield him from what you perceive to be unfair criticism which others such as myself would argue is not only fair for a first round pick but wholly realistic given the resources we surrendered to be able to draft him. The current FO have made an undisputed effort to build around Bryce given the aforementioned limitations created by the trade. There is never going to be a time where Bryce or any other Panthers QB is going to have elite or all pro level talent across the entire offense. But the FO has put talent around him. If you want to say that this is young and undeveloped talent in some areas that's fine but they are building around him. I'm going to be honest with you I cannot recall ever hearing this "big time throw" metric being mentioned in past conversations about Panthers QB's. I mean if Bryce or any other QB is making franchise QB or fringe elite QB  level throws we can recognize that with our own eyes. We have seen this from Bryce  which was a relief and very welcomed sight but now it's up to him to prove he can sustain that because in fairness we've seen some pretty impressive passes from past QB's who ultimately didn't pan out who were arguably more phsyically talented than Bryce. 3rd down conversion and turnover worthy plays are certainly something to hone in on. Bryce did improve in the redzone in that final stretch of games. However one key area to keep an eye on will be passing plays to the middle of the field. That's been an issue for us and Bryce both with turnovers and with bad moments from our receivers with bad drops.  We'll have to see what Dave Canales has planned for all of this within his scheme. I don't expect miracles but I do expect a competent formidable offense that is enjoyable to watch in 2025. That's the minimum expectation and I do not believe it is at all unreasonable.
    • You gotta have that attitude. Feels like a major turnaround to me!
