Star Trek: Discovery

I'm not sure Lorca really did that to his crew, he KNEW he was being spy'd on, so maybe he dropped little things to see who picks up on it.    It's possible it's true as well, but wouldn't that news have spread and everyone would know, much like Michael's deal?

Nice post @outlaw4!  I agree with you.  I feel like there is a lot of depth here.  Sure, some people don't like or appreciate the darker, war story Trek, but seeing as how this could be a different timeline (the Kelvin timeline, thanks for getting me to read up on that!), seeing that this is a star trek for "now" instead of a return to the rose tinted past.

On this episode, I really liked digging a little deeper into Lorca, past his arrogant facade.  I think that his choice with his crew makes for an interesting plot point for sure.  How desperate is Star Fleet for war heroes?  You could really see how calculating he is.  As far as helping the other guy, you have to think that he's not naive enough to think that dude survived 7 months on a prison ship.  The new guy has to be a spy.

I was reading about that on gizmodo, and it points out that there's a tie into the actor who plays Voq.  And that Voq's friend was a member of the spy group of Klingons, and she asked him if he would be willing give it all up....  Lorca has to know something is up there...right??

The fact that Burnham was not the principal in this episode was great.  Give the other good actors a chance to do something other than nod or stare in aghast horror at whatever she does.  F-bomb?  So what.  It's an online show.  And it was f'ing cool.  But there will be a very good reason why this doesn't propagate.

I can't wait to see what the long term consequences are for Spore-Boy.

I've heard of the rumors regarding Tyler. It makes sense except the scene where he's alone with the Klingon female. Lorca's nowhere to be seen so having him whale on her doesn't line up with something a spy would do. Either the theories are false or the scene is meant to throw off the viewer and the situation isn't as straightforward as we think it is.

Lorca made his confession once he already destroyed Mudd's device and Mudd revealed what we could assume is that most in Starfleet had heard. The captain being the sole survivor of his ship would raise questions, certainly, but he apparently gets the results needed to overcome that. Now, if him killing his own crew is a lie, that's a rather bad lie to let out to Tyler and Mudd. Regardless, I could see that revelation coming back to doom him in the future.

Whew! Got lazy and didn't watch Episode 6 until today. Heard rumblings it was rather weak but as a famous Vulcan would say, it was... fascinating.

- Starting off with a beauty shot of Vulcan. I've always had that impression that everyone in Vulcan lived underground because it looked too barren. I hope we see more vistas of other worlds.

- I found Sarek's early line of "Ignorance can be beneficial" more eye opening once I watched the entire episode. Not the twisted definition of ignorance but the dictionary one.

- I'll admit I took this joke from somewhere else but does the back of the "DISCO" short say "VERY". Very Disco?

- The music continues to be pleasing and fitting (the exercise run, the closing Michael/Tyler scene, etc).

- I'm certain there has been riots about what appeared to be a holodeck on the Discovery. At times, I wish they could've just said this was a reboot series rather than belonging in the Prime timeline. Continuity on a series from the 60s is so hard to maintain.

- So Landry died so that Tyler could conveniently take that post a few episodes later? Eh, not sure I like how that was set up.

- Speaking of Tyler, if he is what many people suspect he is, this latest episode throws some really interesting wrinkles.

- The admiral wanted to make an entry into the captain's log. There, I said it.

- Once more, Lorca continues to be an intriguing character. You want to like him for going after Sarek but then we see him basically nudge the admiral into a trap to get her out of the way. Read up on theories about Lorca but I think I'm going to stop to not spoil myself of the surprise.

- So what happens if you order a fattening piece of steak from the replicator? Subtly insult you for poor nutritional decisions?

- Admittedly, going this deep into Trek lore by giving Sarek, Spock (despite not appearing) and Vulcan culture such a prominent role in this episode was bold. It could've been disastrous, especially with the babble about how this mind meld works. Instead, it really added depth into Sarek as such a respected and accomplished Vulcan and yet controversial within his own species for "radical" ideas. It also became a turning point for Michael as a character, maybe a little too sudden of a turn, but at the end, it's the most human we've seen her. The risk taken here with the story was well worth it, I think.

- When we see Michael re-introducing herself to Tyler at the end, I get the impression that the intent is that it's really Star Trek Discovery extending that hand to those that feared the show was going to abandon the ideals Trek is known for. Lethe is the Star Trek I've been wanting to see and I hope there's more of it.

- And last but not least, I bet "titraded" is in the Vulcan word of the day calendar. That's a million dollar word right there.

Man, I thought this was a cool episode.  I can see where some people would be unhappy because it wasn't more about the war with the Klingons.  Instead it was a chance to let some of the other characters "breathe" and develop.  I really enjoyed this kind of episode.  The past couple were pretty Michael orientated and about how she's proving her worth.  I wish we could have gotten more of the Spore Drive Scientist...dude was hilarious!

Captain Lorca is a bad man...  Whatever universe he's from, that's stone cold.  As soon as they started to drink like "friends," I figured he would kill her.  That was a bit of an obvious set up.  And you know she'll need his help to save her bacon, which will complicate whatever her report to star fleet becomes.  Shrewd and opportunistic.

The whole Sarec is actually a huge fan of the potential of humans was cool.  Putting Spock and Michael into the same universe was very cool, and the fact that she's so tarnished would be why he never talks about her.  I mean, the fact that his two "non-Vulcans" would meet and exceed the stupidly high Vulcan standards is pretty cool (a subtle reminder that we can be excellent if we choose to be).

The "Logic Terrorists" is an interesting bend and very much a contemporary idea being put into the universe.  It's good to see that they can be topical about the show and remain true to the "Canon."

Speaking of that, I read a verge article which was kind addressed the idea of continuity (https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/25/16535404/star-trek-discovery-canon-continuity-spock-michael-burnham-technology-klingons), while on the pooper (best reading time!).  While the summary is that ST:D doesn't play too nicely with the Canon, it does tell an interesting story using familiar lore in new and exciting ways.  Should we hold this new show and idea to the hard Canon?  I'd rather have a cool show that tells a different Star Trek story with some familiar ideas, but told for the 21st century with some actual movements in technology.

I really enjoy this show!  Can't wait for more!  I feel you @outlaw4, my work week has been terrible, and I just watched it yesterday!

EDIT:  Oh yeah, that preview though...!  This could be a fun episode!

As an old guy who watched the episodes as a 3/4 year old (can't remember) and when it was the only thing worth watching in syndication, I have gotten a bit sick of "continuity" with Star Trek. Sure I don't want to have something that disrespects or completely erases the stuff we've seen before, but there were no Eugenics Wars in the 1990s among other things, so really it's not that big a deal to do a few things differently.

I loved what they did with Mudd the character, but what kind of starship captain sends a guy like Harry Mudd off with his girlfriend at the end of all that? Am I missing something?

I think the trailer for Episode 7 got my hopes up too high.

- When Tyler had his little speech at the party, I was expecting a few to look in Michael's direction in a "you're responsible, you know" kind of way. If they did, I missed it.

- I swear the space whale is meant as a reference to The Voyage Home.

- Now we have a "Discovery exploding" video to be used like the Enterprise D blowing up in Cause and Effect. More on that episode later.

- Seriously, what is the deal with Stamets shift in personality? I suppose that's one mystery we may find out shortly.

- Some might've enjoyed the many deaths of Captain Lorca. Could've used more variety but man, the one where he's suffocating in space was just cold.

- I don't know whether I like a more vindictive Mudd. It's been too long since I've seen his portrayal in TOS but I'm not sure they completely jive. Then again, ten years is long enough to have a shift in personality. That and some of his lines were funny.

- The "Tyler is a Klingon" theory got even more muddled now. My working theory remains intact, at least.

- Wow. That arms dealer and Stella were conveniently close by, weren't they?

- I've never been a fan of doing romance at a fast pace. One episode debuts Tyler, the next one has a few scenes together with Michael and now they have a thing for one another? Well, at least it isn't Chakotay/Seven of Nine where it just comes out of left field.

- My biggest gripe with the episode is that in the end, it comes off as a weaker Cause and Effect. In some ways, that's a compliment because it's saying that Discovery mimicked a common Trek trope with time travel hijinks. However, I think what made the TNG episode work was that many of the characters become involved in the plot. Rather than a romance plot that placed the focus on Tyler, this could've been the perfect episode for those that we've seen already and yet rarely know about. Yes, Michael needs to get out of her comfort zone but I'd like to think forming friendships is easier to manage than a potential romance. I would've had Michael forced to talk with the rest of the bridge crew and over the episode, figure out who they are, what makes them tick and how they can start working together to defeat Mudd. Don't let, as Mudd put it, random communications officer man stay as random communications officer man.

I just saw the latest episode.  I just wasn't a fan.  Way too contrived.  I mean, I still like the show, but Mudd's character is just a little much.  I mean, he really was just able to convince the Klingons "Oh yeah, I can tots get the Discovery for you. First, let me get some game changing tech which would make is super easy to take over the entire universe!"

Super contrived.  Painfully contrived.  Did I mention contrived?

I still like the show, but this felt like a weak episode.

Personally, it would've made more sense if Mudd had conned the Klingons himself and got ahold of his device to escape. He'd still go after the Discovery but he'd have a different buyer instead.

Already approaching the midseason break... or is it technically the end of one season? All I know is that it went by too fast. I think we needed at least three more episodes to flesh out things more, especially with the Discovery crew itself. Then again, many of them may die soon.

Onto the latest episode itself...

- In this Trek, no shields and you're absolutely dead. That and we don't see much of the Trek cliche of exploding panels and whatnot.

- I rather enjoyed the initial battle sequence. It reminded us that, yes, there's a war being fought out there and that it's not looking too well. In a twisted way, I was hoping that the torpedoes slipped through the saucer's gaps.

- So we can have nice looking ships like the USS Gagarin but they gave us USS Discovery as the lead ship? Why?

- A point that irks me is that Culber isn't already monitoring Stamets every time he's using the spore drive. Heck, he wasn't even there when Michael went out on that shuttle ride to reach Sarek. Do your job, man!

- L'Rell and the admiral screaming was hilarious. The subsequent dialogue was not quite what I was expecting and I mean that in a good way.

- So is the admiral actually dead, did she escape or what? I'm utterly confused what the deal is here.

- I really hope that Tyler isn't a straight up traitor angle because it doesn't reconcile with what we've seen. My final prediction is that Voq's consciousness is somehow inside the real Ash Tyler. The initial plan may have been to be a double agent of sorts but the process may have been too much for Voq. He can't deal with what he's become and if the plan is still active, it's on shaky ground.

- So was Saru running really the actor, a stunt double or was that CGI? Whatever it was, those Kelpians have some moves!

- Like Geordi on TNG and O'Brien on DS9, Saru must suffer on Discovery. It's hard not to feel for him, to have a Nexus-like moment only for it to be taken away.

- Like I said in the beginning, it feels like we're reaching this point of the series too soon. I'm not overly excited about the next episode like I should be.

With every team having made moves that will surely impact their draft strategies, here is a three-round 2024 mock draft that includes trades for both future draft picks and current players. 1. CHICAGO BEARS: QB CALEB WILLIAMS, USC Williams was always the choice, and now that Justin Fields is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, we can write this one in pen. 2. WASHINGTON COMMANDERS: QB DRAKE MAYE, NORTH CAROLINA The great QB2 debate rages on, and reports indicate plenty of teams are split between Maye, J.J. McCarthy and Jayden Daniels. Ultimately, Maye is the better quarterback prospect, so until I'm confidently convinced otherwise, he is the No. 2 pick. 3. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: QB JAYDEN DANIELS, LSU New Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo had this to say about draft strategy when speaking with CBS News Boston in mid-January: “What I will say is this: We’re gonna draft the best player for a position that is very important. You put the pieces together.” For him to say that at that time means the Patriots were confident in not only Caleb Williams but also Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels to be franchise quarterbacks. Mayo likely doesn't express that thought if New England isn't planning on taking whichever quarterback is left on the board, even if it's the QB3 of that group. 4. **TRADE** MINNESOTA VIKINGS: QB J.J. MCCARTHY, MICHIGAN Vikings receive Pick No. 4 and a 2025 fifth-round pick; Cardinals receive Pick Nos. 11, 23 and a 2025 third-round pick The Vikings didn’t trade for the Texans' No. 23 overall pick just to hear Roger Goodell say their name twice on Day 1. They’re eyeing a trade-up for their quarterback of the future and can now give a team picking in the top five an enticing deal. I ultimately think that is with the Arizona Cardinals. In doing so, Minnesota pairs the budding McCarthy with Kevin O’Connell, and McCarthy is put in a comfortable situation to not start right away with Sam Darnold also in the mix. 5. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS: WR MARVIN HARRISON JR., OHIO STATE The Chargers would likely love to move back, potentially entertaining a Vikings offer of two first-round picks if it came to that. But if Minnesota trades up to No. 4, Los Angeles may not want to pass on Harrison after moving on from wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen in free agency. Click here to see Marvin Harrison Jr.'s 2024 NFL Draft profile. 6. NEW YORK GIANTS: WR ROME ODUNZE, WASHINGTON The Giants will be in the trade-up market for a quarterback, but if they stick at No. 6, I think it’s a receiver over an offensive lineman since they brought in a few veterans in free agency to give them good flexibility at tackle and guard. From what I have heard, Odunze has been acing interviews on top of his excellent NFL scouting combine performance. His size would add something new to the Giants' starting receiver lineup. 7. TENNESSEE TITANS: T JOE ALT, NOTRE DAME After listening to Titans head coach Brian Callahan and general manager Ran Carthon talk at the NFL scouting combine about their desire to improve team speed this offseason, I thought this pick could be one of the top receivers. But all the money they gave to Calvin Ridley — in addition to already rostering DeAndre Hopkins and Treylon Burks — brings me back to the offensive line. Tennessee targets OT1 here and forms one heck of a left side of the line with Alt and Skoronski, along with the newly signed Lloyd Cushenberry III at center. 8. ATLANTA FALCONS: EDGE DALLAS TURNER, ALABAMA The Falcons hit the free agency quarterback prize of Kirk Cousins, so there is no threat of them selecting a quarterback in the first round. And after a few wide receiver additions in free agency, as well, look for them to eye the defensive line, specifically the hyper-athletic edge rusher Dallas Turner. 9. CHICAGO BEARS: WR MALIK NABERS, LSU “You’re telling me Caleb WIlliams is going to get to throw to D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen and Malik Nabers?” Yes, that’s exactly what I’m telling you. 10. NEW YORK JETS: OL TROY FAUTANU, WASHINGTON The Tyron Smith signing does not change my opinion that the best pick for the Jets at No. 10 is Troy Fautanu. Fautanu is a versatile offensive lineman who can start at both guard and tackle in the NFL. That flexibility will be important, with two older offensive tackles set to start for the team in 2024. Fautanu could even get reps at left guard, and if anything happens to Smith, he can kick out to tackle and the newly signed John Simpson can step in. Investing in that offensive line depth is better than drafting tight end Brock Bowers. 11. **TRADE** ARIZONA CARDINALS: CB QUINYON MITCHELL, TOLEDO Cardinals receive Pick Nos. 11, 23 and a 2025 third-round pick; Vikings receive Pick Nos. 4 and a 2025 fifth-round pick The Cardinals took a nice deal to move down from No. 4 to No. 11 in this mock draft and, in doing so, grab themselves a CB1. They signed Sean Murphy-Bunting to a three-year deal, but that shouldn’t stop them from drafting a player of Mitchell’s caliber. He posted elite coverage grades in each of the past two seasons. 12. **TRADE** PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: T TALIESE FUAGA, OREGON STATE Broncos receive Pick Nos. 22 and 53; Eagles receive Pick No. 12 and a 2025 third-round pick Look, you can’t tell me Howie Roseman doing something like this is too crazy to predict. With no second-round pick, the Broncos could aim to move back from No. 12 if they can’t trade up for a quarterback. The Eagles have an extra second-round pick, which could make this a deal. In doing so, Philadelphia — which has always looked ahead when it comes to building in the trenches — could draft a player like Fuaga, who could start at guard early on and then kick out to right tackle when Lane Johnson retires. 13. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS: CB TERRION ARNOLD, ALABAMA The Raiders should be aggressive in trading up for a quarterback, but with no deal done here, they attack a major area of need by selecting a potential CB1 in Arnold. Click here to see Terrion Arnold's 2024 NFL Draft profile. 14. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: T OLU FASHANU, PENN STATE Fashanu brings some concerns about how he deals with power, but he’s a fantastic athlete and a great pass protector who can still develop that power as a young player. The Saints can’t just roll into next season under the assumption that Trevor Penning will get substantially better. 15. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: TE BROCK BOWERS, GEORGIA This is a common mock draft choice, but it’s an easy one to make if Bowers falls this far — which I believe is realistic. Bowers could be in for plenty of early targets from quarterback Anthony Richardson. If not Bowers, one of the top cornerbacks could be in the mix here. 16. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: IOL JACKSON POWERS-JOHNSON, OREGON The Seahawks would love to get Troy Fautanu here, but with him off the board, they opt for another interior offensive lineman who can play guard and center — and one who dominated at both spots at the Senior Bowl. 17. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: WR AD MITCHELL, TEXAS Letting Calvin Ridley head to a division rival was a major fumble by the Jaguars. They signed Gabe Davis, but he struggled last season as a WR2. Mitchell is the kind of elite athlete that general manager Trent Baalke tends to gravitate toward. 18. CINCINNATI BENGALS: T JC LATHAM, ALABAMA The Bengals have two major trench needs: replacing D.J. Reader on defense and replacing Jonah Williams on offense. Here, they address the offensive tackle need, as it is harder to hit on those players outside of the first round. Latham is a natural fit, playing at Alabama as a starting right tackle, where Cincinnati has a void. 19. LOS ANGELES RAMS: DI JOHNNY NEWTON, ILLINOIS Aaron Donald‘s retirement is disappointing for the Rams, but alas, he has chosen to ride off into the football sunset on the road to the Hall of Fame. The Rams know how important top-notch interior play is. That’s why I see Newton as being high on their board. He earned elite cumulative PFF grades in both pass rush and run defense over the past two seasons. 20. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: CB COOPER DEJEAN, IOWA An offensive lineman could also be high on the Steelers’ board for the first round — interior offensive line and perhaps offensive tackle — but DeJean fills a major roster hole with a player Pittsburgh will love due to his versatility and physicality. 21. MIAMI DOLPHINS: DI BYRON MURPHY II, TEXAS Miami lost Christian Wilkins in free agency and could need to replace that juice on the interior. Murphy is an incredibly talented and athletic three-technique defensive tackle who can quickly get off the ball as a pass rusher and hold the line well for a guy of his size. 22. **TRADE** DENVER BRONCOS: QB BO NIX, OREGON Broncos receive Pick Nos. 22 and 50; Eagles receive Pick Nos. 12 and a 2025 third-round pick The Broncos would likely love to come out of the first round with a quarterback. Getting into the top five this year would be difficult for them with no second-round pick to offer, so instead I have them trading back, getting an extra second-round pick and still drafting a quarterback they can build around. I like the idea of Nix, one of the most cerebral passers in the country, getting to work with Sean Payton, who orchestrated plenty of methodical offenses with Drew Brees in New Orleans. 23. **TRADE** ARIZONA CARDINALS: EDGE LAIATU LATU, UCLA Cardinals receive Pick Nos. 11, 23 and a 2025 third-round pick; Vikings receive Pick No. 4 and a 2025 fifth-round pick The Cardinals' second first-round pick is a pass rusher — the best one in college football over the past two years, to be exact. Latu isn’t the most athletic edge rusher in this class, but his production would be tough to pass up for Jonathan Gannon's 3-4 defensive front. Click here to see Laiatu Latu's 2024 NFL Draft profile. 24. DALLAS COWBOYS: IOL GRAHAM BARTON, DUKE After losing Tyron Smith and Tyler Biadasz to free agency, the Dallas Cowboys will need to shuffle their offensive line. As a player who can play all five spots on the line, Barton would be an excellent choice for Dallas to build its “best five” for 2024 and beyond. 25. GREEN BAY PACKERS: S TYLER NUBIN, MINNESOTA Even after signing Xavier McKinney in free agency, the Packers could still use another high-impact safety. The more I thought about it, the more I loved the idea of filling the back end of this defense with playmakers. Nubin is experienced, productive and talented. He is worthy of a first-round pick. 26. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: EDGE JARED VERSE, FLORIDA STATE There aren’t many better scenarios for the Buccaneers than somehow coming away with Jared Verse at Pick 26. The Florida State product is talented enough to go much higher than this, but after free agency, I can now see him and Laiatu Latu falling a bit. That doesn’t make them any worse as players, though. Verse would be an immediate starter in Tampa Bay. 27. ARIZONA CARDINALS: DI BRADEN FISKE, FLORIDA STATE Fiske was the talk of the town at the scouting combine, leading all defensive tackles in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump and broad jump. His tape shows a player who wins off speed and one-gap pressure as a pass-rusher. After free agency, the Cardinals have some size on the interior. Now, they need some speed. 28. BUFFALO BILLS: WR BRIAN THOMAS JR., LSU This is a very common pairing, but after moving on from Gabe Davis, the Bills need a consistent field-stretcher. Thomas ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at 209 pounds — so, yeah, he’ll do. 29. DETROIT LIONS: OL JORDAN MORGAN, ARIZONA After losing Jonah Jackson in free agency, the Lions could need a starter along their interior offensive line. Morgan played tackle at Arizona, but his best position in the league is likely at guard. Most importantly for this pairing, he’s a tough player who came back from a torn ACL very quickly to get back on the field and compete last season. 30. BALTIMORE RAVENS: WR XAVIER WORTHY, TEXAS “Mr. 4.21” likely booked a ticket to the first round with his record-breaking 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. I could see the Ravens as a potential landing spot. Getting that constant deep threat on the field would open things up for Zay Flowers and Mark Andrews underneath. Click here to see Xavier Worthy's 2024 NFL Draft profile. 31. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: T AMARIUS MIMS, GEORGIA Mims has one of the craziest builds you will have ever seen — in a good way — at 6-foot-8 and 340 pounds. His talent and potential are too good to escape the first round. He also played right tackle in college, which aligns with a potential starting spot for the Niners. 32. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: T TYLER GUYTON, OKLAHOMA The Chiefs will have plenty of options at the back end of the first round, but if Guyton is available, I like the idea of drafting him to develop him as a good depth player if they need him and a potential starter in 2025 and beyond.
