What If... Marty Just Did Something That Will Make You Love Him?

Let's just... for old time sake.... revisit the Marty Hurney firing:

"This was an extremely difficult decision," team owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement released by the team. "Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship Games. Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years. I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization."

Hurney also made it clear that he was fired and didn't resign.

"I'm not a quitter. The hardest thing about this is my final record for the season is 1-5. That's a hard one to live with. I haven't lost confidence in my ability."

The Panthers went to the Super Bowl in the 2003 season and the NFC Championship Game in the 2005 season. But Carolina hasn't had a winning season since 2008 and never had back-to-back winning seasons in Hurney's tenure.

"I am very fortunate to have been a part of one of the best organizations in the NFL since 1998," Hurney said earlier Monday, in the statement announcing his firing. "As general manager, I will always regret not helping us win the Super Bowl or having back-to-back winning seasons. I hope this change starts accomplishing the direction to those goals.

"I understand this decision by Mr. Richardson and will always have an extremely close relationship with him. I consider him the best owner in the NFL. I am responsible for everybody in coaching, the players, the scouts and everybody in football operations. After six weeks, we are 1-5 coming off a 6-10 season."

------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone should be confident and comfortable that Hurney will get this team back to where it belongs..... never having back-to-back winning seasons.

how many years? to hear some of you tell it we spent decades over the cap...

We gave Beason and Williams those deals in 2011. Now, in 2017, this is the first year we've actually been able to sign a FA with some decent money (although Kalil has been average, at best). Other than that, we've had to pick up pocket change guys that we've been lucky to have panned out (Ginn, Mike Mitchell).

Those contracts took a toll on us for years. We've just now recovered from it.

i agree with your premise... my comment was more the parallel between the two...whining about the one when both did the same its a matter of who you like and don't like...they are two sides of the same coin...

And yet, you bitch about Gettleman and prop up hurney. Funny how that works

I agree somewhat. Josh was WAY more valuable than the compensatory pick that the Panthers got for him. It's all about value in the draft but it was dumb to pull the tag period..I hoenstly thought Norman was in some legal trouble that had not gotten out yet as to why the tag was rescinded

Can I have what your smoking. Matt Kalil is AWFUL compared to the money Gettleman paid him. He might as well paid Josh if he is gonna throw away money like Hurney was.

Hurney,

2003, 2005, 2008. 1 SB lose, 1 NFC lose. 2 division championships. 11 years.

Gettleman,

2013, 2014, 2015. 1 SB lose, 3 division championships(record obtained.)... wait for it.... wait for it... 4 years and a draft.

So there... anybody see a difference? Anybody see the crackpot JR must have been smoking?

I don't prop up Hurney...I do hate G-man and that is no secret but I have not offered much in the way of love for hurney or any propping up ... this isn't a zero sum issue... hating G-man doesn't mean i love Hurney...what's funny is how you miss the point ...

I never said Kalil was doing well. But, he was a decent name that DG could have picked up. He's definitely been inconsistent and "average at best" means that his best play has been average. He's not good at all, and wasn't a great signing. My point was we had some decent money to spend this offseason, unlike years with Hurney.

Who did Gettleman bring in players or coaches that REALLY put the Panthers in position to win those division championships? btw the 7-8-1 year was a fluke.

I'm looking at numbers...I never referred to Kalil...I was for paying josh..that's no secret... my question was about the comment on not having the money to go after decent FA...what is considered decent money for this purpose?

    • I have to say, whatever the reason was, Baker was not good here, there was little indication he was gonna be good.  Other than that I pretty much blame Tepper for the first 7 years of his stewardship being pure misery and full of fugtardedness. Things were finally somewhat improved upon in year 8. No coach under Tepper even smelled 8 wins before. And that coach did it with Bryce Young. While most people hated on him.
    • Neither. Stay with Darnold, keep DJ Moore and CMC. Draft Jalen Carter, Kobie Turner in 2023. Draft Drake Maye if Darnold struggles, or Jared Verse if Darnold gets the Panthers 9 wins in 2024. Draft Tyler Shough to backup Darnold in 2025. And stay with Wilks through 2023. Get a new coach if Maye is the pick or give Wilks a defender in Verse if he wins. That's what I wanted at the end of 2022, and CJ or BY were never worth that cost. A QB with a pro pedigree that grades out in the top 20 picks isn't even worth that cost.
