And that, unfortunately, sums up Ron Rivera. "Something might go wrong, so play it safe."

"Riverboat Ron" is a fictional character.

Question occurred to me watching a replay of the game, do you think Ron and Shula were playing for a FG, or at worst OT, on the drive that Cam broke the big run?  If Cam didn't have the big play what would they have done?  Obviously we'll never know but the play calls were very conservative on that drive.  Seems like it might have just been another case of Cam making the coaching staff look good.

I think its rare that they would play for a fg.  They did it a couple of times this year, at the end of the Patriots game when we got the ball back with about a minute or so left.

I would guess their thoughts were along the lines of

1.  Don't turn the ball over.

2. Try to get a td, but at least get in fg range

3. run enough clock off so the Vikes don't get the ball back with enough time to score.

4. Don't turn the ball over.

IMO, they were running the ball to get a first down, and run time off, when the Vikes would likely be looking pass.  But they were pleasantly surprised with the results.
