New GM Candidate: Martin Mayhew

Mr. Scot

It may not look good to some, but that hardly equals "shitshow of epic proportions."

You saw how they went after Oakland.  But Oakland could at least say "hey, we hired a Super Bowl winning coach".

We hire Marty Hurney over three better qualified black candidates?  There is no spin that'll take that stink off.

Yes how it went in Oakland was not a "shitshow of epic proportions" either AND what they did that was wrong was hiring Gruden before other interviews. We didn't do that. You're being ridiculous right now Scot. Nothing at all will come of it when we hire Hurney until new ownership brings in their GM.

There's already plenty of discussion of how we're making a mockery of the Rooney Rule and Hurney hasn't even been hired yet.

Plenty of discussion on the Huddle. Our GM search, dog and pony show or not, is back page news at best when it comes to the NFL as a whole right now. There's the Super Bowl, pending free agency, the Lions' and Bears' pending head coaching hires, the draft, etc. The NFL world as a whole doesn't give a rat's ass about our GM search.

Darin Gantt is talking about it plenty on PFT.

Darin Gantt shitting on the Panthers? Shocking. It's pretty much all he does for PFT. That is one bitter, bitter dude.

It isn't just Gantt. Heck, loads of people have responded to news about the GM search with similar comments.

Heck, nobody knew who Jourdan Rodrigue was, but one perceived sexist comment and she was national news.

In today's climate, and with Jerry Richardson's reputation being what it is, this is the kind of thing the media could have a field day with.

There's just too much else going on. Like it or not the boxes have been checked. It's not against the Rooney Rule to make a terrible hire and proving that candidates weren't taken seriously is virtually impossible.

When you already have an owner who's considered a racist, this is an extremely bad look.

It. Doesn't. Matter.

He's selling the team. He's going to pocket billions. The front office is going to get cleaned out by new ownership. Hell, the Bills pretty much already cleaned it out. There's no one left in the front office who cares about looking bad and there's virtually zero chance Hurney is retained by new ownership. We'll have a new GM search in a matter of months and none of this will matter in the long run.

You're a great poster, but you're way too worked up over this one. If this is indeed the dog and pony show that it looks like, then this is just JR ensuring that Marty Hurney one last payday.

Not so high on this idea.

Might still be better than Hurney, but he wasn't that good with the Lions.

We've certainly got our Rooney Rule bases covered though, haven't we? Anyone else kinda get the impression that the team is overcompensating so that they can make excuses when they hire Hurney?

I'd rather keep Hurney to be honest.

Looks like both Mayhew and Dawson finished their interviews today. Should get a final decision any day now.

Not worked up at all. Just talking about what can happen.

And I know what Richardson is doing.

The timing is going to be all wrong for this to be a big story. We'll probably announce it next week in the after-glow of the Super Bowl when all the media attention will be on the outcome of the Super Bowl and the Pats' OC and DC becoming the new coach of the Colts and Lions, respectively. Then it'll be onto free agency, then there will be the focus on franchise tags, then the Combine. We're making this move at one of the busiest news periods in the NFL year.

I expect new ownership to conduct the real GM search in June or July when NFL news is dead when it will get some real attention and put the Panthers in the national spotlight.
