Oscar Nominations

A few oscar movies I've seen recently...no spoilers

The Shape of Water - I liked it but strange and the stories been done before but interesting and great acting.

Three billboards outside Ebbing Missouri - off beat and a little of everything here.  Really liked it.  Funny parts and some great acting in this one.

Dunkirk...meh, I turned it off.  Maybe I will try again later but didnt like it.

Saw Get Out way back and its really good and I think has a real chance to win.  Still I think Three BBs will take it from what Ive seen.

Another one to check out on Netflix is Mudbound.  Good movie.

Lastly, I would say I was somewhat disappointed with Blade Runner 2049.  My expectations were sky high but I would call it good.

I really loved Get Out, but the fact that it got an Oscar nom says a whole lot about the state of the industry today. I'm super happy for Jordan Peele though. I haven't seen Shape of Water, but I suspect it is similar. Hollywood plays it too safe with this poo.

Three Billboards was shot in Sylva and Black Mountain, NC. While watching it I kept thinking to myself, "this doesn't look like Missouri, it looks like Western NC." Pretty great movie. I liked the open ending.

You have to be in a certain mood for Dunkirk. We watched it shortly after binge watching The Crown on Netflix, so all of that history was fresh in our minds. Great movie, but the three separate timelines can get a little confusing.

Dunkirk is fantastic for editing, and audio, and all that, but overall as a movie, I found it very overrated.    Was probably better in theater as well but when we're looking at Oscar nominations, I would think you want some good ACTING in there.    Not that it was BAD acting, there just wasn't very much of it (dialog).

Once I figured out what Dunkirk was about, it only made it stupider. So, the bad guys will shoot this thing full of soldiers, but not this thing? And when the magical refueling plane runs out, why not turn around and do what the other guy did?

I have yet to see Phantom Thread, The Post, or I, Tonya.  But from what I have seen I would vote for

Best Picture: The Shape of Water
It seems to be the favorite and I hope it wins but I could see voters awarding del Toro and then trying to make some political statement here (I know, shocking).  The have both Get Out and Lady Bird (heavily female cast and female director...#metoo!) to choose from.  Nothing against either, enjoyed them, but they are not best picture.  ***I would have voted for Wind River over any of the nominated films***

Best Director: Guillermo del Toro
I actually think he is going to win.  He should have won for Pan’s Labryinth (the film should have won too) and I will be really excited to see him get the award.

Best Actor: Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
This is the most sure thing, has to win for me this year.  Luckily, like Casey Affleck last year, it seems it will happen.  I honestly think the film itself should be higher up in the competition for Best Picture compared to some of the other challengers.

Best Actress: Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water)
I have no strong conviction here.  I have seen three nominees and Would not argue against any of them, they were all amazing in their different ways.  McDormand is going to win, and it does not really upset me.  She was great.  Ronan was great also.  I have not even see the other two nominees so they may be better than all three.  

Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
Again, I do not have very strong feelings on this one.  Rockwell is the best of the three I have seen, but he is not so great that I would be upset if he lost.

Best Supporting Actress: Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird)
It seems as if Janney is going to win.  I have not seen her performance so at this point I cannot criticize that choice if they go that way.

Agree with just about all of that but I liked Billboard a little better than Shape simply because it was basically a Splash remake of sorts.  Liked it just not as much.

I can definitely understand the preference, it is my second choice of the ones nominated.  I would be perfectly okay with either of them or Darkest Hour.   

The last two years have been weird.  Normally there is a film that I definitely think should win.  Lately I have been more likely to have several I would be okay with.  Last year I had four (of course non of them won).

Finally saw Darkest hour and loved it.  Great movie even if its pretty much all dialogue.

I love anything about WW2 and its must see if u like at sorta thing.

Now gotta go back and watch Dunkirk.

I have a seriously difficult time believing that Shape of Water is better than Pan's Labyrinth.

Oh it is not.  The Shape of Water was the best nominated film this year.  Pan's Labyrinth is my second or third all-time film.
