1st string offense vs Bills.

Went back and saw the first  screen play to DJ Moore was tipped because of Moton fell and the the DE got free to knock down Cam pass. Other than that and Kalil's allowed pressure that Cam escaped, the oline was perfect.

Cam over shot Olsen 2 times. He is usually good down the seam on the intermediate passes, just has to get warmed up and the footwork mechanics need to be consistent. The bootleg is something he will have to perfect as I have said before. Cam has never been the best thrower on the run, but if he perfects that the offense will be almost unstoppable especially in the redzone/goaline.

On the other side, Cam seems to have gotten better at the short passes. Glad to see him checking down CMC/Armah more willingly than forcing the ball downfield into double coverage.

Cam actually only overshot Olsen once. The first pass of the game was meant for Funch, but Funch slipped while running his route.

I was glad to see Cam making quicker decisions though. Also, it was nice to see the offense successfully execute some screens.

The problem with this analysis is that was only 2 series, no game planning was involved and we were putting in plays to see how players performed not put in the offense or players we will see during the regular season.

This was a vanilla offense that tries to implement some things without giving away too much for the regular season. So any analysis and resultant conclusions are very premature are best. Let's see what we do against New England and that gives us some inkling what the offense might look like

Went back and watched the 1st string offense again.  Looks like Thomas is already penciled in as the #2 tight end. He was in on 6 of 14 plays with Cam.

In those 14 plays here are the players and packages we used.

McCaffrey,Olsen and Funchess were in on all 14 snaps. After them:

  1. Smith 10 snaps
  2. Thomas 6 snaps
  3. Moore 5 snaps
  4. Wright 4 snaps
  5. Armah 2 snaps
  6. Claussell 2 snaps

1st Series

  • 1st play, 12 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Thomas, Funchess, Smith)
  • 2nd play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Moore)
  • 3rd play  12 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen,Thomas, Funchess, Moore)
  • 4th play we ran a jumbo package with both tight ends, and added Blaine Claussell as a blocker with Smith and Funchess remaining the starters at WR
  • 5th play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Moore,Wright)
  •

2nd Series

  • 1st play Claussell and Armah out there in a jumbo package, Funchess, Smith starters at WR. - Nice lil play design as Armah slipped out for an open pass on the playaction
  • 2nd play 12 Personnel (McCaffrey,Olsen, Thomas, Funchess,Smith)
  • 3rd play 12 Personnel (McCaffrey,Olsen, Thomas, Funchess,Smith)
  • 4th play 12 Personnel (McCaffrey,Olsen, Thomas, Funchess,Smith)
  • 5th play 21 Personnel (McCaffrey,Armah, Olsen, Funchess,Smith)
  • 6th play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Moore)
  • 7th play 11 Personnel (McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Wright)
  • 8th play 11 Personnel(McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Moore, Wright)
  • 9th play 11 Personnel(McCaffrey, Olsen, Funchess,Smith, Wright)

6 of the plays were out of the 11 personnel, our primary package for at least the past few years

6 of the plays were of out the 12 personnel (2 tight end sets)

Few quick thoughts based on the info above:

  • Was nice to see us trusting Thomas out there with that many 2 TE sets out the gate. He didn't look lost and thats good for a 4th round pick in his first game
  • Funchess seems to be holding onto the number 1 Receiver spot since he was in on all 14 snaps
  • Also glad to see Smith,Moore and Wright get time in at the 3 receiver sets. Hoping to see Samuel get in that mix next week as well.
  • Appears Armah has a chance to play a bigger role in the offense this year. He did well catching a pass and hitting his blocking assignment on McCaffreys 7 yard run. Only 2 snaps but he managed to look good on both of them.

Whoa man, great job

Offense looked good , defense is another story

I went back and re-watched, and the first string defense actually looked good.  The only real problem was Seymour, whose (almost certainly) not going to be a starter.

The DL was getting good push and was controlling the LOS, but Peterman was getting rid of the ball so quickly that there really wasn't time for pressure to reach him.  Jackson gave up a couple of catches, but on one, he slipped, and the other was just a perfect pass and catch where he had no chance.  Seymour though, was horrendous.  Buffalo was clearly targeting him, and it's no wonder why.  His man consistently was getting separation, which made for easy pitch and catches.

The only reason the first string defense didn't look good was because of Seymour.  Everyone else did well.  I felt much better on the second watch, where I could look at everyone's individual performance.

Yeah, like with the defense, I feel more comfortable after taking a second look at the offense.  Despite the pitchforks, Kalil looked good with the exception of that one play that someone posted.  And even then, he kept Hughes on the inside where Cam could see him and avoid the sack.

We have so many weapons that it will be difficult for defenses to defend us.  So many of our guys, like CMC, Moore, Wright, and Samuel, are versatile as well as explosive.  Not to mention the size and playmaking ability of Olsen, Funchess, and likely Thomas.  And with both of our top backs being such good receivers, we will really keep defenses on their heels.

We have a slew of guys now that are quick, explosive, can play from anywhere on the field (backfield, slot, out wide), and are dangerous with the ball in their hands.  We are no longer an offense that is absurdly predictable and easy for defenses to stop by just keeping the receivers in front of them because we don't have anyone that can get YAC's.

I hope so.  The two CMac runs up the gut for nothing setting up a failed 3rd and long tipped screen hurt my head.

Plays are run to see how they work with the personnel involved. They also haven't installed all the offense so they are only running the plays they have installed which is not the full playbook. No game planning will occur until preseason game  3 at the earliest and then it is not that much.

Well, I guess we learned  that the personnel involved in running Cmac up the gut, with 8 in the box on first down doesn't work well...in fact on second down it resulted in a recovered fumble.    The question is, did we learn to do that less.
