Funchess USA Today Vid

top dawg

Just a short little vid about Funchess and his preparation. If he sucks (like it almost seems like some of y'all want from some of the comments), it won't be for lack of preparation.

I like him, and I hope he balls out, regardless if we have to pay him market rates or not.

I don't think it's that people want him to suck.  I just think it's either in the front or back of everyone's mind that this is probably his last year.

If he balls out and someone else signs him, it feels like we developed him and someone else gets the benefit.

If he is mediocre, or just good enough, everyone is going to feel that he is taking up a roster spot for one of our younger receivers.  Plus if he gets a contract it's gonna be a market value which most of us think is too high.

If he sucks, then he hurts the team.  No one wants that.

Since I want to win more than anything,  I hope he balls out.  But I can see how other people feel like regardless , it's not gonna be a nice ending.

Market value is what it is. I mean, we can continue to play the draft game, develop players, and then let someone else reap the rewards. I mean, we can hope to win a Super Bowl while young guys are still under their rookie contracts, even though I can't remember the last time a team won a championship without a receiver who's been in the league for a long while.

The salary cap keeps increasing for a reason. Although I personally think that receiver is an extremely important position---one worth paying for in the long run---I realize that team building is very much a dynamic exercise where you must pick and choose the best pieces and put them together at the exact right times. There is a whole lot of calculation (or miscalculation) involved. But at the end of the day, I don't think that it's good policy to let playmaking receivers slip through your fingers because you're too cheap to pay market rates.

That being said, if Funchess underwhelms, then he is expendable. But, if he progresses in his development (as he has for the most part every season), then there's really no reason why we shouldn't give him his due. If he balls out, do you really want to let him walk? That just wouldn't make much sense for a playmaking WR, especially considering that we have Moore probably for five years and Samuel for at least the next three.

Our wr core will never be Moore and Samuel as WR1/WR2. So if plays well and will accept 12/14mil per he'll be here for a while.

But honestly that's most people's problem with his extension he could put up 1000 yards and show improvement and they still wouldn't think he's worth that contract.

Paul Richardson and Moncrief just got 8/10 mil respectfully, that's the market and I think funchess is better than both of those guys.

Well said. We need the Steve Smith/Muhsin Muhammad like duo again, and that's why keeping him is so important.

    • Yeah. As a wild card team. Washington won the division at 10-6.
    • no doubt but flip that.   The current system insures that there are "regional" games in the early weeks. maximizing the reach of playoff football.  If all of the WC weekend for a conference took place on the west coast they are reducing the "reach" of their hype machine.
    • Hard to say with London--he never ran--combine or pro day.  Here is what AI says, and it is always 100% accurate: Drake London's 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine was not recorded because he was dealing with a fractured ankle at the time. While he didn't participate in the 40 at the Combine or his pro day, his coach said his 40 time was estimated to be between 4.4 and 4.53 seconds. Some sources also list his 40 time at 4.58 and 4.6 seconds Unless you are running 9s all day, top end 40 speed is rarely reached.  I have always looked at the 3-cone drill.  At his pro day, TMac ran a 6.86--pretty good, actually.  For context, it is faster that Rome Odunze (6.88) who ran a 4.45 40.  Odunze is 6'3" and weighs 216, fwiw, and is considered a very good route runner with no wasted motion.  Mike Evans 3-cone was 7.08.  To put it in a broader context, through 2022, with all NFL prospect 3-cone drills combined, a 6.86 puts TMac in the.89th percentile-  Now consider the fact that he is 6'4" and 220.   We might have something here.  '
