The most specific data I found in a quick search was for males 20-24 in a European population, where the prevalance was 0.036% (3.6 in 10,000 people). Can be more common in extremely physically/mentally stressful situations - I've seen people go into it transiently at the end of a 28 hour shift where they're running on coffee, adrenaline and spite.

Meaning that this could be a temporary situation, but his being an athlete puts him at a slightly higher risk. Am I interpreting that correctly?

Pretty much. Though if they abated him that means it wasn't quickly going away. Good news is for most people an ablation fixes the problem, no need for medication or anything after.

Just curious: How common is it among the general population of people his age?

I've had afib since I can remember, it didn't really become an issue until my early 20's at which point I was put on medication to treat it. If it gets worse, I may be looking at a procedure as well. I've been on medication for over 20 years and everything seems to be holding steady.

Edit.....hadn't seen the thread that explains it when I responded here.

Crap

no worries.  It's an un-moderated forum where new threads are created by posters who feel a need to get pied.  No sense in feeling bad about making an honest mistake when redundant posts are the norm.

Best wishes to you and the other guys on here who have mentioned having something like this.
