We're on the verge of being a very good team... How to fix our issues.

If you want to know how likely we are to win a game just pay attention to our rushing attack.  If we can't (or won't) run the ball it directly correlates with losing.

Wins (Rushing totals): Cowbows (32 for 147) / Bengals (41 for 230) / Giants (31 for 118) - this game was a miracle W

Losses: Falcons (18 for 121) / Redskins (18 for 81)

So there it is, over 30 rushing attempts in all of our wins, 18 on the button in each of our losses.  We also dominated in overall rush statistics over our 3 wins, while being dominated in those same statistics in both of our losses.  These rushing stats aren't bolstered by protecting leads either as all of our games have been 1 score affairs.  Yes, the Bengals game was a 10 point win, but that extra 3 point margin came at the final minute after an interception.  Everyone knows Rivera builds his team to run the ball and stop the run.  When it works we win, when it doesn't we don't.  This team just isn't built to put all the pressure on the passing game.

I'm feeling the new trend, score as much as possible and challenge the other team to keep up.

See: New Orleans, Tampa Bay, and Atlanta.

We're really the odball in our own division when it comes to our archaic approach to offense, and honestly we're one of the worst in the NFL at forcing the run and putting ourselves in bad passing situations.

I was browsing some advanced stats this morning and looking at Cam's passes. We barely ever throw over the middle, and almost all of our passing TDs have come on very short passes that get stretched by the playmaker on the other end.

Tell me, then, why we consistently put ourselves in third and long situations, and force passes to the sidelines instead of the middle.

I'll tell you why. It is poor coaching, and poor coordination.

If the offense would fix itself first, our defense could afford the slow starts we've been seeing at times.

we are too old to be on the verge of being a very good team. Our window is closing

Cam and Luke are not even 30

Luke is 27. I don't know why everyone is freaking out saying he "isnt what he once was"

He's overcompensating because our DC is lost and teams are putting linemen on him because Poe doesnt hold them up like Star used to. Its not rocket science

Here's where I am with us being a good team.

Ranking by points scored on offense:

2018:  15th on the year total.  18th at home, and 20th on the road.

Defensive yards per game:

2018:  16th in total yards allowed per game.  15th at home, and 13th on the road.

Defensive points allowed per game:

2018:  10th.  At home, 10th.  On the road, 18th.

This is with us playing the Cowboys, Falcons, Bengals, Giants, and Skins....let that sink in for a minute.

This team has beaten 1 team with a winning record as of today.

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
