The biggest issue (worse the rivera)

All this talk about Rivera and Cam but I think the Panthers biggest problem is personnel and it starts with the front office. The roster is aging and cannot compete anymore. Which is the reason, why the first order of business is finding the next GM.

The Panthers have a challenging offseason ahead. Currently, the team has only 36 players under contract (including practice squad and IR) for the 2019 season and an estimated $28M in cap space. Some key free agent starters/rotational players include:

Mike Adams
Eric Reid
Thomas Davis
Julius Peppers
Ryan Kalil
Wes Horton
Devin Funchess
Kyle Love
Chris Clark

Some depth pieces that fill out the roster include:
Colin Jones
Cameron Artis-Payne
Taylor Heinke
Damiere Byrd
Chris Manhertz
David Mayo

So pretty much, the team has to go from 36 to 90 with $28M of cap space. Some of that can be filled through the draft while we also have some exclusive rights free agents (ie Bryan Cox)  but that's still a lot of holes to fill with limited cap space.

This is the biggest reason why I think the first item on the to do list is bring in a new GM to rebuild this roster. We do have a lot of promising young players but we still need to put capable talent around them.

...We can ALL agree Ron is probably gone along with Turner and Washington....Cap, M. Adams, Reid, Funchess, Gano, T. Smith, M Kaili, Byrd and many others....gone....Sadly the many faces of the Panthers for sooooo many years TD, Olsen, Ryan Kaili, Peppers....they will also be gone.....and honestly at this point in time I wouldn’t be surprised if trades were made for Luke or Cam going into the new season......because both players have contracts with big money due and us with very little CAP space with Cam’s expiring 2021 and Luke’s 2022 and Us not having very much to offer a BIG talent and at the moment they are all We have to offer....so I do hope we draft well.....but with all that said it’s just sad to see this being the last image of our Greats and how it ended......
KEEPING POUNDING.....but this is Season is done......till Next Year.....

Hurney 2.0 has done a good job making the team faster and more versatile. He was able to see that Benjamin wasn't the future and likely will not retain Funchess as well. For those who think this time around he has done a bad job, what exactly has he done so wrong? After all the scouts and coaching staff tell him who they want, he just makes it all work under the cap.

He botched free agency just like gettleman did

    • What's wrong with Damien Lewis? He played pretty well last year.
    • Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.
    • I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
