Fired Bills assistants with Panther Connections

Assuming it was his call (which we'll never know; nor does it really matter).

As mentioned, I believe we can do better.

A lot goes back to Igo's suggestion that assistants could be shuffled though.  Haven't seen that happen yet.

If it does, I'd sacrifice hiring Castillo and keep Matsko if it also meant we brought Steve Wilks back and jettisoned Richard Rodgers. That's easily the weakest spot on the coaching staff right now.

Yes, absolutely. Rodgers has to go. Rivera's buddy has sucked in every role he has occupied and Ron just keeps moving him to different roles in an effort to avoid firing him like he should. I hope we can keep Washington as the DL coach. I'd hate to lose a good DL coach because his boss set him up to fail by putting him into a role he was either incapable of filling or at least wasn't ready to fill.

So you also don't believe firing Jeff Imamura was the answer to our secondary issues?

Speaking of, you know another old Rivera colleague who's out there looking for work right now?

Steve Spagnuolo.  Also worked with Rivera in Philly as a secondary coach.

Only issue there is Spagnuolo seems to think he's better than just a position coach, but hey, it's better than being unemployed.

Pretty much always have.  I think most of the guys who performed well on our line were already established. As far as who we can say Matsko has developed, it's a short list, and for each guy that you can credit him for (Norwell, for example) there's a flipside (Silatolu).

But even accepting that Matsko has done okay, Castillo has a rep for being one of the best in the league.  He and Russ Grimm were always among the guys fighting for that title before Grimm retired.

I've wished Castillo were on staff for years. I also wished for Norv Turner, and that turned out pretty good too.

Matsko was in that "best in the league" conversation also.

You gotta have something to work with.

Or just do a better job of managing what we have (i.e. not putting guys like Clark and Newhouse at LT above Taylor Moton).

Each position on the O-line is not an island. I pretty much learned that from someone here earlier this year that offered metrics to prove that Clark was actually worse on the right side as I recall. Anyway, you have to look at not only the skill of each individual player, but how they will impact and fit within the chemistry of the entire unit.

    • I'm one of the ones that won't let it go because it didn't solve the problem. We didn't address the center position which was a huge mistake. We were in position to easily take 2 or the top IOL. Instead of drafting JPJ over XL or Frazier over Brooks, we relied on an oft injured guard to center conversion and lo and behold, it failed as predicted. XL looks like a 1 year college wonder and an injured Brooks hasn't even surpassed Eric Shelton.  Bryce was also benched for poor performance, so the issue that many claimed was solely bad oline play wasn't. It didn't fix him bailing out of tight pockets because of being unable to see the field or him refusing to work on his atrocious footwork. Then there's the $$$. Lewis got a good guard payday. Hunt got a tackle payday. Pay tackles, draft guards, if you can.  I have no issues addressing problems through FA. It was not addressing C at all that's been the issue and still has been. Ryan Kalil was the anchor of our offensive line. We had years of solid center play and it showed. Now we're still piecemealing the center position with an expensive oline and it's still a shitshow. Why? Because the player responsible for what happens on the line presnap has little to no experience doing it. Spending on a center, whether it be through draft or FA is not bad. It's not a position that can have anyone just thrown in with no drop off in performance. A great center lifts the play of the guards on each side.  I don't like how we've built the line because we've ignored the hinge pin that everyone counts on every play. And the reality of the situation is, it didn't solve the actual problems with Bryce because those have nothing to do with the oline.
    • Haha!!! That's true. Also carry Tomahawks, ballistic missiles, fighter jets, VSTOL aircraft, etc., but none of them clog up the crappers.
