PFF gives Moton props

Taylor Moton was the 15th highest rated tackle in the NFL in pass blocking efficiency this past regular season according to Pro Football Focus, so it's no wonder that he was one of their 10 breakout performers in the NFL in 2018.

"Moton was integral to keeping together an offensive line that very easily could have collapsed after losing both starting tackles in the preseason. The second-year player out of Western Michigan played all of 70 snaps as a rookie before 1,054 this season. Moton finished with the 15th best pass-blocking efficiency among tackles."

Damn, that kid's snaps went up exponentially and he stood up to the test. His efficiency is pretty amazing considering this was only year two, and that may be one reason why the decision was made to keep him at RT. He embodied "next man up" and "keep pounding" all rolled up into one. Can he do just as well on the left side over time? Perhaps we'll find out depending on Williams. But Moton obviously is an anchor on the right.

  • He may be the reason we are not worried about Williams--we are probably going to slow play him---allowing him to shop his skills after surgery.. A RT we know---a LT we hope, but there are NO SIGNS he will be moved to LT.
  • Think about it---Williams on a second contract will be at least $10m--maybe more.  He is a question mark.  We still have the Kalil deal.  Maybe they let Williams go, make Moton the RT of the future, and draft a LT.  Lotta options.

He’s a guard.

Nobody said that, but you need 3 syllable chants to help you understand things.  You were saying he is the LT of the future.  If the Panthers thought he was the LT of the future in 2018, he would have been the LT of the present.  LT is the second most important position on offense.  Or you could remain thick and recycle your invalid points.

Yep. Not a single sign like playing 3 straight at LT when Williams was healthy.

It’s like a beacon for you and your opinion. I was joking with my quick reply but like a bug to a zapper you had to come in LT blazing.

So you think you play your best T at  RT?  Explain.    And I imagine a bug zapper is your primary form of entertainment,  but congrats on using a simile---you must be preparing for your GED.

Not saying that you're wrong, but of course there are likely nuances for each side. Moreover, you do have to take into account the chemistry of the entire line (because no man is really an island).

In all fairness, Taylor Moton can play anywhere on the offensive line with the exception of center (and right guard, but that's only because Trai Turner has that held down).

If DWill is retained, then we can plug Moton in at either LT or LG. If we go out and get a veteran guard in free agency or draft one that is able to start when the season begins, bye Kalil. If we decide to stay with Kalil for one more season for whatever reason, Moton takes over at LG and we see who comes out of the camp battle for center (Van Roten, Larsen, or a draft pick?)

I'm super happy about the Moton pick. His versatility is a blessing. We've got a Pro Bowl RG and the possibility to keep a top RT. Lock that side of the line down and plug Moton in wherever we need him on the left side.

He started a thread about how Moton didn’t play LT week 17 after he played 14 straight at RT and said it meant he can’t play. He appears to be trying to get people to believe it by re-posting his same dribble. Now he’s actually backed away already from his mention that Moton is a better guard.

You are 100% right. If Moton is 100 at RT and 90 at LT and Clark’s play drops from 70 to 40 at RT then you play Moton at RT and Clark at LT for a better OL. And you also don’t take a guy playing a position for 14 weeks straight and move him for 1 week and change two spots on your OL instead of 1.

Reading comprehension---let it work for you.  No---my thread was simply this--If Moton is the LT of the future, he would have been playing LT all season.  You and a few other numbskulls said that he was at RT because Clark could not play RT---that makes no frigging sense--because you would have signed a street free agent to play RT---they are easier to find.

Your argument above suggests that RT and LT are equal--they are not---you play your best LT at LT--we never had to sign Clark--if you think we sacrificed Cam's blind side to accommodate a street free agent you are not flaunting intelligence.  We would have moved Moton to LT and signed a RT--like Newhouse or another of many who can play RT.  Damn son.

I agree, but when I was assessing the fact that they have shown no interest in playing Moton at LT because the opportunity was there most of the season and they did not. At the beginning of the season, he was competing at RT, LT, and he did not take either job.  Yet when LT became open again--he was not moved to LT and a RT free agent signed--they signed a player who could play LT.  That suggests that, since LT protects your $25m QB's blind side, that the premonition that Moton is the LT of the future may be premature--he would have played LT if he was a LT, especially if they knew Cam was banged up.

These Rhodes Scholars accused me of having this opinion-they do not understand third person analysis.  Regardless, I rolled with it.  My points were simple:

Aside from emergency duty, in week 1, Moton has been at RT--even when Kalil went down.

You protect your QB's blind side--if your best LT is on the roster, he plays LT--not RT because some scrub is better at LT---why would they bring in  a street free agent LT and not a RT, where his ineptitude is less dangerous to your QB? The fact that they did not move Moton over to LT at that time speaks volumes.  Anyone who understands OL should have questioned why Moton was not moved to LT.  The only explanation?  They do not think he can play LT--yet these scholars have dubbed Moton, "LT of the Future."

Personally, I think he could be the next LT--but there are no signs that the Panthers do.

I think Moton will be moved to LG and we'll draft a LT. That would be the smart move imo.

We'll need to actually have linemen who can hold up when we go back to throwing the deep ball. Everyone looks great when the ball is coming out fast.

If we re-sign Williams, you could be right. I think they have Moton slated at RT and if Williams gets too pricey, they let him go and stay with Moton.
I would rather draft a LG and play Moton at LT based on what I have seen, but the Panthers have shown no interest in playing Moton there.

If we're going to avoid the deep ball like last season then I'm comfortable with Moton at either tackle spot. If we want to throw the deep ball then I want a better LT than what we have on the roster. I think DEs will go wide around Moton if we try to go deep. I don't think anyone is going through Moton though. That's one mauling son of a bitch.

The smart move is to take a top tackle and make him a left guard and hope a rookie will be a solid LT?

It’s so much easier to find a good guard and cheaper in draft capital. You don’t take a top NFL tackle and make them a guard. That’s what happens to college tackles who can’t play tackle well in the NFL.

The way you word that of course it's not smart. You're throwing "top tackle" around but I don't think of him that way. Please don't reference PFF I don't think they're always right.

Moton doesn't come out of his stance and kick step quick enough for my tastes. He's a little too lumbering. Opposing defenses will see that. DEs will look to get a quick jump and go around him. That problem will show up especially when you go deep. I want the o-line upgraded for premium pass protection.

    • The Bryce stanning is relentless.    Cam’s team won two games the previous season and legit was picking 1st. Bryce’s team won 7 games the previous season and was actually in playoff contention. And legit earned the 9th overall pick.  If anything made that team worse in 2023 than in 2022 it was Bryce. Come on. And missing DJ, I’ll concede that.
    • I see the logic in what you're saying, but I'd also say there were games with a bit more talent on the roster that some of the L's are actually W's.  AZ - We don't get off to a crappy start and if this game is later in the season when Bryce is a bit more comfortable, I think we beat the Cards NO - At least one of, if not both of these games would've gone our way SF - Perfect opportunity to snag a win on the road that Purdy handed to us, but we couldn't do anything offensively TB - Final game was winnable in Tampa  All this to say, I think 8 wins is about where we were at in 2025 if you take the games we barely won and combined them against the games that we barely lost.  Add 5-6 new pieces in FA and the draft. We went head to head and almost beat the Rams in a meaningful playoff game that gave a lot of the youth that experience to take into 2026 and beyond, and I do think 10-11 wins is achievable next year.  Not guaranteed, but much the way folks thought we could get to 8 or 9 wins this year as the ceiling, I think 10-11 is the new ceiling for next year.
    • Milano at LB.  We just have Jags at the position. Can still draft an LB. Likely has to be in consideration at TE. Sanders hurt. TT FA. Doubs, Alec Pierce, Shaheed. All three could really help this offense in totally different ways. Doubs feels the most redundant of the group but he is also the most polished and talented wr. Be done w XL.  I still argue that Bryce needs an elite, Houston-type, defense in order to succeed here. I would legitimately find out the asking price to both Myles Garrett and Vita Vea. Cleveland is transitioning and will have a new coach. Vea is in last year of contract.  Assemble the best dline in football. Bring in Milano to fix ILB. Corners are good. Safety’s aren’t terrible and Ransom looks promising.  You’d have a 3 year window or so.   Biggest issue w any plan is going to be LT. Idk what the fix is there.
