Cam is eligible to return in the playoffs, unlikely as that scenario would be

I am sure they are frustrated as hell.  He probably deserved a contract extension in the 2017 offseason.  But Cam bet on himself, played ball and in the end it bit them in the ass.

No way they make the same mistake twice.

Again, makes sense.

I realize that there are many possible scenarios, and I realize that I seldom predict the future or the past with any degree of accuracy, but here is the math and much like Copernicus  I will attempt to use math and whatever Copernicus did (something about pie) to explain:

The IR status means that Cam will not be back.  If you have noticed the absence of Cam on the sideline as a cheerleader as in the past, he knows something more than we do---he is either absent or uninvolved.  I think they have told him.

Trading Cam is better than cutting Cam, and his price could be lower than you think.  We probably are not getting a first rounder-I think a second rounder would be lucky.  A third rounder is nearly a lock.  if that is all we can get, take it.  There are 3 reasons:

1. You can control where Cam goes.  An AFC team would be ideal.

2. If we trade him, they get his contract.  (cutting him creates a $2m cap hit)

3. If we trade Cam for a third, we get the third this year.  If we cut Cam, we get a comp pick the following year, in addition to paying a cap hit.    Frankly, it would be preferable to take a fourth rounder over cutting him and hoping for the 3rd round comp pick.  Reason?  A fourth this year is equal in value to a third next year.  A team looking for a quick fix at QB would likely own an early 4th  rounder, so the difference is minuscule.

So getting rid of Cam does the following:

  • Gives the Panthers between $19m and $21m in cap room
  • Gives the Panthers at least a mid round draft pick.

Keeping Cam could mean not signing Bradberry and or Thompson, puts a developing QB back on the bench, and quite possibly extends the number of seasons that Cam's injuries have screwed up to 3.

If Cam was healthy,... you play Cam.

the Broncos didn’t even hesitate to play Peyton Manning over Brock Osweiler— and Peyton was a total shadow of his former self.

people want the guy gone too much and cloud it with all kinds of weirdo reasons to hide it.

if he’s healthy enough to run and throw? It’s not even close.

10-6 or playoff berth, we extend the coaching staff and general manager. Which is the scenario i would prefer. Otherwise, clean house and start with a new philosophy.

If Allen shows steady progress and the Panthers make the playoffs. I would prefer Cam to be activated and be the backup as insurance. Assuming he wouldn't be detrimental to the team. Then I'd trade him in the offseason to control where he ends up. Next season, we roll with Allen, well using Cams freed up money to sign Bradberry and Thompson. If possible also extend McCoy. In this scenario we extend Rivera and Hurney.

Although, another scenario that I would accept, is the risk of starting him. If they lose though, clean house. If he did start and leads us deep, offer a incentive laden contract extension. Keep Kyle as insurance until he's a RFA then place a 1st round tender on him and let him go. We may lose some players, but a healthy Cam should be able to carry the team.
