Just speculating but my guess would be CP&F must have long known that moving was eventually going to make sense. The land the foundry sits on is too valuable for industrial use, which needs only reasonable access to major highways for it's logistics. Land on the edge of a growing cities downtown area has value far beyond that. I would not be surprised if the company already has multiple other site options evaluated and may even hold purchase options. They may even already have commissioned plans etc. Even without Tepper specifically, this day was always going to come one way or another for them. Frankly surprised it took this long, but they may have just been content to wait for a lucrative active offer.

Charlotte P&F has had plans to move for almost a year. They are going to a site in Stanley County.

Looks like they already have some land.

The company already owns land out in Stanly County, which is one county over to the east of Mecklenburg. Charlotte Pipe bought about 40 acres out there in 2008, thanks to a $2.5 million grant from the state’s nonprofit Golden LEAF Foundation, the Observer wrote in February 2009.

The company had the land rezoned for industrial use soon after, but hasn’t moved any operations out there yet.

If it does, a new plant will take years to build.

Problem is, even though Charlotte Pipe & Foundry is considering relocating its foundry to Stanly County, the longtime manufacturer hasn’t made a decision yet about a move. Its land uptown isn’t even for sale yet. Any eventual Panthers development on the site is at least a decade away — if it even happens at all.

“We’re not concerned with any of the rumors or any of that. That has no (bearing) on what we decide,” Charlotte Pipe spokesman Brad Muller tells the Agenda.

They should have put Brad Muller in charge of the Cam Newton situation.  Panthers did the opposite of what hes doing.  I bet they could speed up the process for the right price.  Baller.
