No Cap next year??

thats the problem. it won't be one year. If it is uncapped and players sign either 1) enormous deals or 2) just get rediculous signing bonuses, the NFLPA will never agree to go back and limit the money given out. once the uncapped year is here, its here to stay. so one year won't make much difference, but it will change everything if no deal gets signed

That is exactly what is weird about this mess. If I'm an owner, and player and each want a huge contract but don't want the cap hit later, I sign a 5 year deal in 2010 for 70 mill and I structure it to where I get 70 mil in 2010 and a dollar in each subsequent year.....I know it sounds dumb, but you see where I'm going....

the funny thing is that most players dont understand the magnitude of an uncapped year. Yes some teams might go out and spend a little more, but clubs like Tampa will have no cap floor either. They will spend as little as possible and keep their money in their pockets. It is going to be a crazy year next year if nothing happens before then.

There could be a lockout as well... Owners vs. Players, for the simple fact that one would want to force the other to sign onto their terms...

I doubt it all happens, and likely an agreement will be reached...

As has been stated though, you won't see too many crazy things by teams not managed like the Redskins are...

At worst, we get Peppers signed to a cheaper deal than the franchise tag we would apply, because the teams that will want to overpay him aren't going to be competitive for a few years... We'd also be able to restructure some pretty hefty contracts while not having to pay as steep a penalty in guaranteed money for doing so...

Either way, we're in good shape... If Marty stays, especially... While some of his decisions are questionable, he's as good a cap wizard as anyone, and should be able to do even better things without a cap...

I heard a commentary on Sirius this morning which suggested the players want to get a deal before spring of 2010 as they really don't want an uncapped year. The owners see the deadline as being 2011 when the CBA expires and don't mind an uncapped year as much. Seems the poison pills may hurt the players more than the owners at this point. At least that is the speculation by one person in the know at this point.

At Football 201 last night, they players don't seem to want an uncapped year. Anderson kept saying how the young players would get "screwed", Hollis Thomas agreed. There was actually talk from the guys from the FO about this as well.

I could see that.All these young guys thant dont make that much.hopefully the panthers get some long terms deals worked out for some of our guys.

I think there are enough higher-ups that wish for him to finish out his career as a Panther... It may not be 100% to his liking to have to do it, but I think he realizes his situation could be a lot worse... I'm about 83% sure a new contract gets done before next season rolls around... Depending on certain other moves that may or may not be pending, that percentage could go up or down...

Jake will have to restructure at some point, but I stand by my Pep statements, and I get the vibe Smitty doesn't really want to be anywhere other than Charlotte either...

It is a business though, so I can't get too disappointed if either are gone eventually...
