Derrick Brown Combine

I see a lot of people claiming that Brown had a bad Combine. I honestly think that's just because we saw some truly freakish performances from some freakishly large men at this year's Combine.

I like to look at current player comps when looking at Combine performances.

Derrick Brown - 6'5" 326 pounds with 34.25" arms and 9" hands

40: 5.16 seconds

Bench: 28 reps

Vertical: 27"

Broad Jump: 108"

3 cone: 8.22 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.79 seconds

The best comps? Just two the best DTs currently in the NFL.

Akiem Hicks - 6'5" 318 pounds with 35" arms and 10.25" hands

40: 5.23 seconds

Bench: 26 reps

Vertical: 31.5"

Broad Jump: 108"

3 cond: 7.75 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.86 seconds

Jurrell Casey - 6'1" 300 pounds with 32" arms and 9" hands

40: 5.06 seconds

Bench: 26 reps

Vertical: 27.5"

Broad Jump: 101"

3 cone: 7.75 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.78 seconds

When you compare Brown's Combine performance with current proven elite NFL DTs instead of guys in his own class who may or may not prove to be workout wonders there's nothing alarming about it.

Not at all and I've actually heard quite a few say he had a great combine. I saw a big board running across the bottum of NFL network today that had him as the 4th player in the whole draft. I just hope he's there at 7, I believe he will be and he will make the other dline man better by giving them one on one's, the lbs better by keeping them clean, and the secondary better because they won't have to worry about play action as much.

if we trade down and still get brown i will be ecstatic, imo that's the best win win for the panthers this year unless a top tier talent like Okudah is there

I believe by position Simmons, Okudah, and Brown are equal talents however Brown just has the ability to impact the game more. He can change how good the whole defense is and that is why he is worth the 7th pick. I think he is a much better prime Stat Lout.

Nothing about that Bridgewater signing makes sense. Not a damn thing. Roll with Cam or tank. Don't shoot for 5 or 6 wins.

The only way it makes sense is if Cam is hurt worse then we know but your right I would have rolled with Cam all day. I frankly think it was handled awfully..... What really makes me mad is a healthy Cam never got to utilize these weapons that are finally in place or a play caller like we have now.

I just don't see the point in a veteran bandaid either way. Mediocrity is purgatory in the NFL.

Only reason I see it is if they think they can get more out of Teddy. He's only what 26? And from what I saw on tape pretty accurate but only has a long ball range of around 45 yards. You are correct though a guy like Alex Smith for example is hell, just good enough to hold on to and kill your draft positioning but not good enough to win the SB.

Alex Smith has been a lot better in his career than Bridgewater. A lot better.

OH no doubt that wasn't where I was going just saying if bridgewater even became that good he's still that guy. Imo Alex Smith was never winning a SB unless he had an all world team around him.

They're elite NFL DTs. Draft status no longer matters once you're in the league.

Combine matters where guys are being picked. Do I agree with it? Not so much but that’s how it works.

I have the referenced play marked to start the video, but you should watch the whole thing. Dude grabs two whole ass men and tosses them aside like they are nothing.

Go to the 1:07 mark and then question his movement skills.

    • The bad thing is that Xavier Legette kind of ignored the Jugs machine his rookie season. The good thing is that he's committed to it now. Catching is important to an NFL receiver (sarcasm), but, perhaps just as important is a receiver's---any player's---mindset.  "This offseason, the young wideout has gotten back to something in terms of preparation (Jugs machine). 'Oh man, it’s always been something I’ve done, and I don’t know why, but I felt like I could take a little breath,' explained Legette (via Darin Gantt of Panthers.com). 'And when you’re playing in this game, you can never do that. It’s always a way to get better, and that’s one of the ways to help with catching. For sure, for sure. In my mind, I’m thinking about ways, things I can do. What can I do to have less drops this coming season in Year 2? 'The whole mindset has changed, man,' added Legette. 'Trying to do anything I got to. I’m sacrificing a lot of things that I used to do outside of the building to put my work inside the building.'" https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/xavier-legette-focused-on-reducing-drops-that-plagued-rookie-year-with-panthers-01k1692c0tz9 So, yeah, it wasn't good coming in taking some things for granted, but Legette is young. His mentality appears to have changed and he appears to be maturing and he's been putting in a lot of work by all accounts.  I know some of you are down on him, but I still have faith. Last season was a disjointed mess in its entirety, but there were still some flashes, particularly with route running. With Legette's seemingly better fit as the WR2, mindset and focus---doing his actual job catching the ball---he should be able to improve.
    • It is worth noting the fanbase has long held a love hate relationship with PFF over the years. Now that we are employing some of their people and actively using their data in our roster building approach going forward this should serve as the end all be all to any debate. This is either going to end really well or really bad. It's the Panthers. So save your energy and give it some time.
    • And to be honest, we weren't really talking about PFF grades either. I brought it into the conversation via a pic that's LLM-related (which apparently some Huddlers took issue with) as an aside for providing more specificity than just sheer numbers
