Look, Clausen was terrible.  No argument.  However, at the time he was picked, things like this were being said:

Lol. You realize that Hurney caught a falling knife like he did with Little. If a QB or LT was expected to go early in the 1st based on media rankings and they slide that’s because the workouts and pre-draft meetings showed something the media didn’t know. Unfortunately, the common denominator is that Hurney was our GM and he’s like the guy at the FF draft who’s using the magazine from July. He thinks he’s getting a bargain and trades up or tries to trade up for a guy who no one else wants to touch that early. Just because the same media guy who thought Clausen was an early first rounder praises us for value doesn’t mean we weren’t the only team high on Clausen. Like Little, if Clausen really had all that potential he’s at a position where you get over drafted so when he falls it means 31 teams doubt he and Little will do well, but as they say it only takes one person to believe.
